Happy 60th Barbie!

Yesterday on Saturday, March 9th, Barbie celebrated her 60th Birthday/Anniversary. I am a total Barbie fan. In fact I’ve done some posts about Barbie in the past that will give you a better idea of how I feel about our girl Barbs. 😉

Barbie’s Evolution turns into a Revolution [2014]

Barbie Evolves…Mattel bringing its A game [2016]

In order to celebrate I thought I’d share a few pics of me playing with Barbies as a kid/pre-teen and share with you some of my favorite Barbies that were released while I was growing up. Yes, I played with Barbie until I was like 11 or so. #NoShame I still get to play every now and again, with my little cousins or my god daughter. It brings me back and I love it! 😉

These are just some I remember having as a kid. I’m sure there are tons of others that I loved.

I buy Barbies for my god daughter who is now old enough to play with them. And I even buy them for my niece too, even though she’s still a little bit too young. I just want them  to know the journey Barbie has taken and how far she’s come. Yes I’ve bought them some curvy dolls. In fact, I never got to purchase one for my collection, so as I picked up one for my niece, I figured why the hell not? I should own a curvy Barbie. The little girl in me, still supports her love of Barbie dolls. I chose this curvy Fashionista, because she reminded me of myself a bit. She has hips and thighs! And her outfit was funky and floral like the hippie side of me.

Oh and FYI Barbie has a VLOG channel on YouTube and it is AMAZING!  I’m going to be 28 later this month and I can’t believe how her words can hit home even at my age. It’s really great to see her speaking on important issues young girls and women still face today. I loved the last two vlogs she posted, such amazing positive messages for the youth of the world to absorb. Barbie teaches girls that they can do anything and to stick up for themselves. In this world we need positive role models for our girls! Barbie wasn’t always considered a good/smart/healthy role model. Even some youth today, consider her “stupid.” But I loved her, and with all the positive changes being made today to her brand, I love her even more. I can only hope that I will one day, have my own daughter and pass down my Barbie collection to her and teach her all that Barbie has taught me.

And just for some fun, I thought I’d share their Birthday Barbie video with you too!

#BLOGTOBER Day 13- A Fall Memory

Growing up, I was a really big Barbie fan. I loved buying them and playing with them. I loved picking out their outfits and brushing their hair. I had tons of them! And every Halloween or Holiday they would release a new seasonal Barbie. I wasn’t one much for collectibles, because I actually liked to play with my dolls.

I remember when I was younger I used to take trips with my Aunt and my Mom, upstate to visit my cousin in college.

It was a long drive so my Mom let me skip school on a Friday and we drove up early and shopped with my cousin for stuff she needed. We just spent the whole day with her.

Those were always such fun days.

But this one time, I remember, while we were shopping, I saw a Halloween Barbie, that I really wanted.

My parents never raised us to expect that we’d get everything we wanted or everything we asked for. But my mom made an exception and, ended up letting me get the Barbie. I was so excited that I opened it up right away and played with her the whole car ride home. It was always the best feeling, opening a new Barbie.

Til this day I remember what the doll looked like and because of the internet…I can show you just exactly which one it was.

2147d8559b5b269625b42a6d0cb85bbb--barbie-halloween-mattel-dolls[1]
I remember thinking she was dressed so cool. I loved her sparkly, glitter dress and she had on these cool black ankle boots. Her lipstick was a nice orange, to match her orange studs. And how cool is that flame detailing at the bottom of the dress. She also came with a trick or treat bag. 😉 She was just super fun. I really hope my niece is a Barbie fan when she gets a big older!  I have all of mine packed away, I need someone to share them with.

There was just something about playing with Barbies. It was like my own early form of story telling. I could name them, give them personalities, create plots, dress them according to their style. It was a blast, and these dolls could be anything they wanted to be. If you ask me, Barbies are an incredible tool for a child’s imagination. It certainly was for mine.

Signed,

Barbie Girl 😉

P.S. Just in case you didn’t know, Barbie has a YouTube Channel…

2016 Memory Jar Review

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS!!!!!!

I cannot believe it is already 2017.

img_1114

My camera year is wrong…should say 2016, ignore that mishap. :/

As I sat down on New Year’s Eve to sift through my memory jar- a bandwagon that I finally hopped on two years ago- I was amazed at how little I felt like I did, because of how quickly I felt the year had flown by. It was a blur for me. But as I dove into these colored pieces of paper, the many memories came flooding back….and a lot actually happened. It’s so easy for us to get wrapped up in the holiday bit at the end of the year, that we forget all the memories we made throughout the year.

So here are some of my most favorite memories- (in no particular order!)

Barbie Evolves…Mattel bringing its A game

I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world, (sorry I couldn’t resist.)

12525694_533233593514436_504386958151462000_o[1]

Anyway… aside from that 90’s pop song being the greatest thing EVER, the world isn’t a Barbie World, and we are NOT Barbies. At least not the sculpted versions, we have been conditioned to believe are perfect and something to aspire to.

But as we grow and human nature catches up to corporate business, we see a change on the horizon. As you grow older I think your sense of self reflection gets stronger and you realize what’s really important in life. Heart is important. So why not instill that in the younger generation from the minute they are able to play with these iconic dolls.

Last week, I saw all the news about Barbie getting a makeover, and I was LOVING what I was seeing. What a changing world it is, that we live in. As Barbie Evolves…Mattel is bettering the iconic doll for future generations.

I loved Barbies as a kid, and even now all these years later, I still feel a connection to them. It takes me back to the days of my childhood. Where I would spend hours playing and being imaginative. Seeing the changes the companies are starting to realize need to be implemented to support healthier body image observance for young girls, is a really special thing. Granted, it took a while, but change is coming and it’s a groundbreaking move for Barbie lovers, like myself, to see.

-CUE RANT-

If you are not a fan or the change, you clearly don’t have a relationship with the toy, so get over it, and move on. Because this doesn’t concern you. Sorry… just reading the comments on the Barbie Facebook is so frustrating. If you don’t care about the change, why are you here looking it up? Why must you comment to say you don’t bother with Barbies? How is this change anything but good? I guess people will always have something to complain about.

-Ok, RANT OVER-

THE EVOLUTION OF BARBIE-

Girls everywhere now have infinitely more ways to play out their stories and spark their imaginations through Barbie. Along with more overall diversity, we proudly add three new body types to our line. Here’s a look at why we did this, and the team that made it possible. #TheDollEvolves (SEE- video linked below)

“They’ll all be called Barbie, but it’s the curvy one—with meat on her thighs and a protruding tummy and behind—that marks the most startling change to the most infamous body in the world.” -TIME MAGAZINE

I want one of each, to put away for my future daughters, or nieces, or for my god daughter when you gets into Barbies which I selfishly hope is very soon! Haha! As I mentioned, I loved Barbies as a kid and I love that they are making Barbies more realistic and their beauty more attainable. It’s a great step in the right direction for inspiring positive body image for our young girls and future generations.

Is Ken going to be getting some realistic improvements next? I hope so. TODAY reports on the possibility. This looks so cool! If Barbie is looking more like real girls and women, shouldn’t Ken do the same and look more like real men, and boys? YES.

new_kens_by_lyst_a51a71b7f3cac2a5159956f9b1aab025.today-inline-large[1]

Everyone; men, women, girls, boys…we all come in all different shapes, sizes, heights, colors, ethnicities, some of us have curly hair, some of us have straight hair, some of us have beauty marks, some of us have freckles, and we all express our creativity through how we choose to dress. No one is perfect, but we are all unique. And there is a beauty in diversity. If everyone looked the same, like all the Barbies used to, the world would be a very boring place. I love that there are White, Black, Hispanic/Tan, and Asian Barbies in this new line. It’s a beautiful thing to see a reflection of our realistic world in these toys. Looking at this line of Barbies, their features are more human, they look like real people you’d pass on the street.

Because every little girl (or boy) playing with these dolls, just wants to feel accepted. To know that someone out there gets them and looks or feels like they look or feel. It’s human nature to want to feel that sense of connection to the world around you. Even as adults we want to feel accepted in our environment and when we look around and feel like maybe we stick out or we feel like we don’t fit in, it can cause us to feel badly about ourselves. That’s the same situation with children. The toys they play with mean the world to them. It’s the creative world they get to live in and make up stories. So if a doll looks like them, they get to play a more realistic version of that world. And feel that if Barbie can “be anything” which is the whole story behind Barbie and her million careers, then they can be anything and do anything. If Barbie isn’t perfect, they don’t feel like they have to be.

Rock on Barbie, Ken. Be you. Do Your Thang. (Words to live by…Thanks *NSYNC. and yes I changed the title to Thang, because I just thought it was more effective than Thing. haha!)

Which new Barbie and Ken do you find most inspired? Which is most like you? Personally speaking I really dig the curvy Barbies, with the tan complexion and brown hair. I feel she looks most like me. Although I gotta admit the fact that some dolls have hazel eyes now, is kinda awesome too. And I love the blue hair and other funky colors too. Super cool! So let’s start a conversation, what do you guys think? Tell me in the comments below!

Barbie’s Evolution turns into a Revolution

barbie-logo4954_640n

Always happy to open a new Barbie! (this one was "Slumber Party Barbie")

Always happy to open a new Barbie! (this one was “Slumber Party Barbie”)

I was the little girl who loved her Barbies.

I had dozens of them.

I would sit and play for hours,

dreaming up story lines for my favorites and making them find their princes and live in their big beautiful house, happily ever after.

I had the house, the plane, the cars (a yellow buggie which was rad!) even a pool….I had all the fun gadgets and accessories!

While many girls were most likely more partial to blonde bombshell “Barbie,”

I was more pron to playing with the “Teresa” Barbie.

c6d0be7478f33fff7da65324bda73b50

She was my favorite Barbie, and even though she was a “Teresa” I named her “Mandy” and played with her ALL the time.

To me the “Teresa” dolls were the fierce fun brunette who I felt looked more like me (dark hair tanner complexion)…

That, and my mom’s name is Theresa, which I thought was pretty cool, lol.

515z0TqhScL._SY300_

I also loved her outfit, because there were tons of ways to wear it!

“Teresa” was the more ethnic Latina inspired Barbie, she was always my favorite.

It was a sad day when I packed away all my Barbies.

It’s funny you never think the day is going to come as a young girl just playing and dreaming.

But for me it came a little later then most…

honestly I probably played with Barbies til I was like 11 or 12… (no shame).

Granted I had two little younger cousins that were still playing with them, so they were my convenient excuse.

For us, playing with Barbies…was a bonding experience between cousins.

For the most part we would end up just dressing them up and doing their hair and then getting bored and putting them away.

It was when that started to happen that I think I realized it was time to say goodbye.

Even though my Barbie days are behind me (until I have my own daughter, or until my goddaughter starts to gain an interest…or until the next time my other little cousins drag me into their rooms to play) I still have to get a glimpse of the Barbie aisle anytime I’m in a Toy store. Call it nostalgia, but I find it interesting to see how Barbies have changed and what the latest accessories are.

Which brings me to my main point.

Barbie…although beloved…could use a bit of a reality check.

9 photo:willy stylist:susan assist:julia After all Barbie isn’t normal…she’s too perfect…

Her body, her clothes, her makeup…too perfect.

In a way it lends fuel to the body image beast that has plagued girls from early on.

It’s hard for me to understand that though…

I mean growing up, I never looked to Barbie as a body image role model too much.

I never looked at her and thought hey I wish I was stick thin.

Ok maybe when they came out with the Barbie with the rubber belly and belly shirts and belly ring aka “Jewel Girl.”

Seriously though...rubber belly haha I swear the things they come up with...evolution I tell ya!

Seriously though…rubber belly haha I swear the things they come up with…evolution I tell ya!

I was kinda like…oh I wish my stomach was flatter, cuz her outfit is AWESOME! (and she had on purple lipstick and lip liner…how cool is that! lol.)

images

“Midge” & Baby ❤

But I guess that proves my point, I’ve just put a hole in my own declaration.

Young girls are impressionable and although I wouldn’t plague body image issues solely on Barbie and her unrealistic proportions, I also think Barbie could afford to tone down the sexuality just a bit. It is a child’s toy. They shouldn’t be sexualizing things at such a young age. Instead Barbie should serve as an inspiration to girls, to be themselves, to be whatever they dream to be…I mean that’s why Barbie has so many careers. That’s why she’s a doctor, a teacher, a singer, a ballerina, a basketball player, a gymnast, a mom! I’ll never forget when I got the pregnant Barbie, it was pretty cool! She basically had a magnetic belly bump that you would put the little baby in!

A few months ago I remember seeing Demi Lovato (the curvy

Demi Lovato Feb. 2014

and beautiful girl she is!) tweet these…

article-2339212-1A401024000005DC-899_634x260

eaef546b4ed596fb8c2b38fbf77f0d85

I remember thinking this is so amazing.

It’s just a beautiful concept to inspire young girls to be themselves, to not strive to be stick thin, or to conform to media standards of beauty (which if you ask me is made up of photo shopped women who don’t even really look like that.)

And now it seems Barbie is getting a new look…welcome the latest Barbie-related campaign…”Average Barbie” where “Average is beautiful.”

average-barbie average-barbie 3 meme1.jpg

“Average Barbie” was derived from the mind of artist Nickolay Lamm…in which he’s now labeled this new and improved version of Barbie after himself calling this version Lammily. The Lammily line of dolls is said to be in production soon.

Barbie’s New Girl in town is quite the improvement…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfQu8pq0kok

I love how simplistic this doll’s look is, she wears less makeup and has a fuller figure. I feel like looking at her I know her. I feel like I can walk down the street and see someone who looks like her. Her proportions are based off of an actual human body type, which is something that should really be praised. I just recently found out about this campaign, I had seen Demi’s tweets about it a while ago but I didn’t think that it was being put into production so soon. As I saw the current update news on twitter, I decided to really get into it and do my research. Like I said Barbies are close to my heart. But I have to say I’m kind of surprised and saddened by the negative reactions this campaign is getting. Many bloggers and news websites are claiming this doll is still fake. I understand that it may not be the perfect improvement as it gears more to an athletic characterization, but I think a fuller figured doll is at least a step in the right direction.  I mean if anything she’s promoting exercise, and a healthier life style. I don’t understand what’s so bad about that. There’s room for evolution. And with evolution comes revolution. And a chance for change.

Barbie39s-Figure-Then-amp-Now barbie2

So as Barbie continues to evolve, and her shape changes as it’s changed several times before to fit the times, the more willingness for change the more room there is to revolutionize the toys your daughters play with. There is a definite anti-[perfect] body image revolution upon us in this generation and this Lammily line of dolls is a way to help change the narrow minds of media constraints.

For more on Lammily visit:

https://www.lammily.com/average-is-beautiful

Barbie’s Evolution is turning into a Revolution for all future generations.

Because the more we speak up about these issues the more will get done.

And the more that gets done, the better the minds of future generations of daughters.

It all starts with diversity and acceptance in all shapes and sizes.

Change for the better.

Can’t wait to make a purchase, because I support this campaign, it’s way more realistic then the dolls I grew up playing with! Be apart of the movement and understand that “Average (as in your everyday ordinary girl) is beautiful.”
