Yesterday on Saturday, March 9th, Barbie celebrated her 60th Birthday/Anniversary. I am a total Barbie fan. In fact I’ve done some posts about Barbie in the past that will give you a better idea of how I feel about our girl Barbs. đ
In order to celebrate I thought I’d share a few pics of me playing with Barbies as a kid/pre-teen and share with you some of my favorite Barbies that were released while I was growing up. Yes, I played with Barbie until I was like 11 or so. #NoShame I still get to play every now and again, with my little cousins or my god daughter. It brings me back and I love it! đÂ

My favorites
Jewel Girl– she was my absolute favorite, I named her Mandy.Â
Spot Scene
Butterfly ArtÂ
Flower Power– I had the one in the orange.
Happenin’ Hair-I had the one with the pink and green streaks on the far right.
Pregnant Barbie– Her name was actually not Barbie, it was Midge.
Sit in Style….Guys, remember bubble furniture?
These are just some I remember having as a kid. I’m sure there are tons of others that I loved.Â
I buy Barbies for my god daughter who is now old enough to play with them. And I even buy them for my niece too, even though she’s still a little bit too young. I just want them to know the journey Barbie has taken and how far she’s come. Yes I’ve bought them some curvy dolls. In fact, I never got to purchase one for my collection, so as I picked up one for my niece, I figured why the hell not? I should own a curvy Barbie. The little girl in me, still supports her love of Barbie dolls. I chose this curvy Fashionista, because she reminded me of myself a bit. She has hips and thighs! And her outfit was funky and floral like the hippie side of me.Â

Oh and FYI Barbie has a VLOG channel on YouTube and it is AMAZING! I’m going to be 28 later this month and I can’t believe how her words can hit home even at my age. It’s really great to see her speaking on important issues young girls and women still face today. I loved the last two vlogs she posted, such amazing positive messages for the youth of the world to absorb. Barbie teaches girls that they can do anything and to stick up for themselves. In this world we need positive role models for our girls! Barbie wasn’t always considered a good/smart/healthy role model. Even some youth today, consider her “stupid.” But I loved her, and with all the positive changes being made today to her brand, I love her even more. I can only hope that I will one day, have my own daughter and pass down my Barbie collection to her and teach her all that Barbie has taught me.Â
And just for some fun, I thought I’d share their Birthday Barbie video with you too!Â

Happy Birthday Barbie!
Thanks for the amazing memories, and for the inspiration!
You were my childhood.

This past weekend I went out to celebrate my best friend’s 25th birthday. We enjoyed a really great Mexican meal and danced a bit at a club filled with a fog machine, a disco ball, an electronic bull, and a whole lot of Spanish music. Sometimes I act my age. Other times, I’m 25 going on 85. #GrandmaSouls
As the summer weather begins to creep in, I wanted to create a fashion look both cute, and comfortable. Something that I would survive the heat in.
So here’s what I came up with and I have to admit, I was happy with the end result.
Here’s the look in-you guessed it-crappy cell phone pictures. đ
How flawless is that printed set on my best friend. #FashionistaSistas
For this look I wanted to include darker, more timeless shades and pieces, and enhance it with accessories and a bold shoe and red nails. #YouGuessedIt #IAlsoRockedMyBLUEHeels #YetAgain.
I basically just used some products; curling mousse, curling serum, dry shampoo for volume, and hairspray and then I braided two braids on either side of my head and pinned them back. I curled the rest of my hair and pulled it to the side twisting it up into a messy side bun, with a few clear elsatics. I added the flower to dress up the simple do.
MAKE-UP:
I got my inspiration for this look from a video linked below.
I just combined alot of whites, browns, reddish orange bronze colors, and golds, lined with black eyeshadow on the top and bottom water lines and blended a nude lipstick and a dark brown over top. You can basically make your own adjustments to this look, but I really loved it! Especially this lip combo-Left: wet n wild’s 900B “Pink Suga.” Right: Revlon’s 665 “Choco-Liscious.” I will definately be doing this look again.
So there is my look, I felt chic and sophiscated but funky with the blue heels, red nails, big rings and studded purse. Those little touches definately made the outfit less businessy and more me.

As part of my best friend’s present this year I got her tickets to a concert-
Here’s how I told my best friend we’re going to see Bethany Joy Lenzin concert!
I got her a card and printed out the concert poster to fold up and leave in the card. On it I wrote a little riddle that read:
She’s someone we’ve always admired.
Beautiful and unique.
A”Joy” to watch on screen.
A voice, oh so sweet.
She’s finally touring- New York City.
I hope you are free.
So we can live out a childhood dream
And finally see our ultimate idol;
a girl we’ll always know as “Haley.”
We can’t wait….full blog post (and possibly vlog) coming for that- post July 28th!
*All photos (except those of Bethany Joy) are my own*
Iâm a Barbie girl in a Barbie world, (sorry I couldn’t resist.)
Anyway… aside from that 90’s pop song being the greatest thing EVER, the world isn’t a Barbie World, and we are NOT Barbies. At least not the sculpted versions, we have been conditioned to believe are perfect and something to aspire to.
But as we grow and human nature catches up to corporate business, we see a change on the horizon. As you grow older I think your sense of self reflection gets stronger and you realize what’s really important in life. Heart is important. So why not instill that in the younger generation from the minute they are able to play with these iconic dolls.
Last week, I saw all the news about Barbie getting a makeover, and I was LOVING what I was seeing. What a changing world it is, that we live in. As Barbie EvolvesâŚMattel is bettering the iconic doll for future generations.
I loved Barbies as a kid, and even now all these years later, I still feel a connection to them. It takes me back to the days of my childhood. Where I would spend hours playing and being imaginative. Seeing the changes the companies are starting to realize need to be implemented to support healthier body image observance for young girls, is a really special thing. Granted, it took a while, but change is coming and itâs a groundbreaking move for Barbie lovers, like myself, to see.
-CUE RANT-
If you are not a fan or the change, you clearly don’t have a relationship with the toy, so get over it, and move on. Because this doesn’t concern you. Sorry… just reading the comments on the Barbie Facebook is so frustrating. If you don’t care about the change, why are you here looking it up? Why must you comment to say you don’t bother with Barbies? How is this change anything but good? I guess people will always have something to complain about.
-Ok, RANT OVER-

âTheyâll all be called Barbie, but itâs the curvy oneâwith meat on her thighs and a protruding tummy and behindâthat marks the most startling change to the most infamous body in the world.â -TIME MAGAZINE
I want one of each, to put away for my future daughters, or nieces, or for my god daughter when you gets into Barbies which I selfishly hope is very soon! Haha! As I mentioned, I loved Barbies as a kid and I love that they are making Barbies more realistic and their beauty more attainable. Itâs a great step in the right direction for inspiring positive body image for our young girls and future generations.
Is Ken going to be getting some realistic improvements next? I hope so. TODAY reports on the possibility. This looks so cool! If Barbie is looking more like real girls and women, shouldnât Ken do the same and look more like real men, and boys? YES.
Everyone; men, women, girls, boysâŚwe all come in all different shapes, sizes, heights, colors, ethnicities, some of us have curly hair, some of us have straight hair, some of us have beauty marks, some of us have freckles, and we all express our creativity through how we choose to dress. No one is perfect, but we are all unique. And there is a beauty in diversity. If everyone looked the same, like all the Barbies used to, the world would be a very boring place. I love that there are White, Black, Hispanic/Tan, and Asian Barbies in this new line. Itâs a beautiful thing to see a reflection of our realistic world in these toys. Looking at this line of Barbies, their features are more human, they look like real people you’d pass on the street.
Because every little girl (or boy) playing with these dolls, just wants to feel accepted. To know that someone out there gets them and looks or feels like they look or feel. Itâs human nature to want to feel that sense of connection to the world around you. Even as adults we want to feel accepted in our environment and when we look around and feel like maybe we stick out or we feel like we donât fit in, it can cause us to feel badly about ourselves. Thatâs the same situation with children. The toys they play with mean the world to them. Itâs the creative world they get to live in and make up stories. So if a doll looks like them, they get to play a more realistic version of that world. And feel that if Barbie can âbe anythingâ which is the whole story behind Barbie and her million careers, then they can be anything and do anything. If Barbie isn’t perfect, they don’t feel like they have to be.
Rock on Barbie, Ken. Be you. Do Your Thang. (Words to live byâŚThanks *NSYNC. and yes I changed the title to Thang, because I just thought it was more effective than Thing. haha!)
Which new Barbie and Ken do you find most inspired? Which is most like you? Personally speaking I really dig the curvy Barbies, with the tan complexion and brown hair. I feel she looks most like me. Although I gotta admit the fact that some dolls have hazel eyes now, is kinda awesome too. And I love the blue hair and other funky colors too. Super cool! So letâs start a conversation, what do you guys think? Tell me in the comments below!
