When Calls the Heart Chat & Style Files

Hallmark series When Calls the Heart is such a wholesome gem. I fell in love with it last year when I binge watched it and got caught up before the return of it’s 4th Season.

Now it’s in it’s 5th season, and I unfortunately no longer get the Hallmark channel. And I miss it so much! Not only do I miss the fun seasonal movie themes but I miss this Sunday night series terribly! I try to keep up with it through social media, but it’s just not the same.

I haven’t found a free, reliable way to watch online either. 😦

All I know is there was a Christmas Special which I missed, and then the first 3 episodes have aired. Last season we left off with Jack proposing to Elizabeth who obviously said yes! But then he had to leave to go fight in a war. Leaving us #Hearties heartbroken.

So Erin Krakow’s Elizabeth Thatcher was left waiting for quite a long time. Waiting in worry.

Daniel Lissing who plays the role of Constable Jack Thornton, was absent from many of the ending episodes of the 4th season. And from what I’ve learned online, he wasn’t in the first few episodes of the 5th season either. [However it did appear he was home for Christmas briefly]. I hated not having our favorite smouldering Mountie at Elizabeth’s side.

Needless to say he returned in this past Sunday’s episode and their reunion was so sweet and charming, as usual. Thank you to the sweet soul on instagram who uploaded clips!

“I’m home.”

Jack and Elizabeth have FINALLY set a date for their wedding, maid of honors and best men have been picked and Rosemary is clearly already in planning mode.

It’s so sweet to see how happy Jack is to start his life with Elizabeth. He even created a rough blueprint for their future home, and took her to the land he bought for them. 5 bedrooms! He’s planning on growing their family that’s for sure! #LoveScene? 😉 They even had a sweet candle lit dance with a music box he bought while on his travels through the Northern Territories.

“There are so many rooms!”- Elizabeth

“Family is going to grow, right?”- Jack

“Apparently by a lot.”- Elizabeth *Of course Elizabeth has her shy eyes on.*

“I want to put a big dining room right here.”- Jack

“How big?”- Elizabeth

“Well big enough to fit all of the Thornton Clan.”- Jack

So cute! I can’t take it. He’s so excited!

However, in sneak peeks for future episodes. It appears that the wedding planning doesn’t exactly go so smoothly. With a fire in the church, I imagine that will set things back. And a few moments of pain inflicted in Jack’s eyes, hints that we may get a bit into what he suffered through during the war. There seems to be a potential post traumatic stress disorder story on the horizon. If you ask me that is so realistic and makes total sense. Jack is very quiet in his emotions, very laid back. Never likes to make a fuss. Even when he and Elizabeth had their breaks in their relationship he was never overly dramatic about their confrontations. Sure he’s well skilled in the grand gestures, but he’s worked on them for 5 years, at the beginning of their courtship boy did he stumble over his feet.

Jack is so grateful to come home to the love of his life, but he’s throwing himself into planning their wedding and their future life together without taking a break. It’s all going to come crashing down on him. And I sense from what I’ve seen  so far, that Elizabeth knows that. She’s asked him several times to “Take a breath,” to “rest and relax because he must be exhausted.” She also has been asking him about the war and what it was like, to which he often deflects saying it “was what is was, and it’s over now.”

“I’ve waited so long for this.”-Elizabeth

“It’s good to be home.”-Jack

“Now we can go back to where we were.”

“No.”- Jack

“No?”-Elizabeth

“I don’t wanna be engaged.”-Jack

“What?”-Elizabeth

“”I wanna get married. Build a house. Start a family.”

“Okay. Catch your breath.”-Elizabeth

“I don’t need to. The thought of coming home to you, and having you there everyday, it energizes me. It got me through some rough times.”

I just love them. They are so sweet together and he really loves and respects her so much. I get all giddy just thinking about all the sweet little moments they’ve had together over the seasons- playful banter, disagreements, kisses, all the small looks and smiles. Even when they talk about each other with other people they’ve said such sweet things. In fact this past Sunday in a chat with a younger man- Jesse who is courting Clara (Abigail’s daughter in law whom came to live in Hope Valley after her husband was killed in the mine accident along with Abigail’s husband) asked for some advice. Jack responded that he knows he’s smart enough to know how lucky he is. When Jesse inquires if he and Elizabeth ever broke up, Jack answers that there were times when they put things on hold. He and Elizabeth took some time getting back to each other but they did in the end. Jack further explains that if Jesse and Clara are meant to be they will find their way. It was so sweet to see how he is now in this position to give a younger man advice. Many times he would seek his own advice about Elizabeth from sources like Lee, Bill Avery, and Abigail. He and Elizabeth have come a long way and have really grown together. The list is endless, I could go on all day. In fact I’ve been re-watching seasons on Netflix just to get my WCTH fix. I miss it so much! Lol.

It’s so crazy that they are at this point in their relationship, I mean from their early scenes together, it’s beautiful to see them now so in love. It seems like time flew by. I mean granted I binged on Netflix, I’m sure those who watched live feel like it’s been an eternity. But in many ways I too feel like it’s taken them quite long to get engaged and now married. I mean Jack was courting Elizabeth for quite a while, and Rosemary and Lee even got married in season 3, before our favorite Hope Valley couple Elizabeth and Jack. Lee and Rosemary are super cute though too! I love how he is so patient with her and all her craziness! Lol.

Although Rosemary came into Hope Valley at the end of Season 1 hoping to win Jack back (Plot Twist she and Jack used to be engaged!) It’s so crazy to see how much has changed, Rosemary and Elizabeth used to be each other’s competition, and now they are the best of friends. And so are Lee and Jack! Lee didn’t come in until the beginning of Season 2 and the two wed in Season 3! So it’s been a bit of a fast track for the Coulters.

So mind you, you can imagine how anxious we #Hearties have been to see Elizabeth and Jack finally on their way to tying the knot. IN TWO WEEKS! Gosh it’s going to kill me not to watch it! It’s such a big season for them! And I am very passionate when it comes to television and my ships! After all he’s had the damn ring since like what Season 1 or 2, I think! It’s been a long, beautiful journey and I really miss watching it live!

I guess I’ll have to stick it out and wait until Season 5 is on Netflix. 😦

In the meantime I wanted to chat about the things that make this show so charming. And a lot of that has to do with the fact that it’s set in a small town. I love small towns, and quaint little cafes, church and shops. I love the simplicity of their life, (not to mention that they have such a comradery in hope and faith throughout the town).

And last but not least I LOVE the FASHION.

Fashion in the 1910’s were all about the long skirts, and the corsets. The lace, pastel colors, and dainty earrings. The hair was also in a league of it’s own with simple updo’s with a twist or long soft curls. In the first season, Elizabeth dressed a bit more showy, with large hats and flashy dresses, after all she hailed from Hamilton where she lived a wealthy city life. But soon she embraced the more simplistic nature of Hope Valley and toned things down a bit. She found herself, she found her home.

But for a character like Abigail Stanton played by the lovely Lori Loughlin, she had a bit of  the reverse happen. When we first meet her she is all about simple undo’s and no makeup. Beautiful no matter what, but soon Abigail starts to find herself again, she starts to find hope too and realizes she still has so much living to still do despite suffering so much loss when the coal mine tragedy struck taking her husband and son from her. She starts to let her hair down again, and begins entertaining some gentleman callers who obviously couldn’t help but fall for her. All while being a café owner and town mayor. Total Girl Boss.

Simplicity at it’s best…

Abigail Stanton…

I just love it all. Rosemary spices things up with her red crimson wardrobe as only she could! #Theatrics

One of these days I plan to host a 1910’s inspired party. I need to dress up! I’m dying to play pretend and live in Hope Valley for a day.

When Calls The Heart Season 4 Premiere

Sorry Walking Dead but I think I’ve traded in zombies for love. Hey, when you take away my favorite love story (Maggie and Glenn) you deserve to be put on the back burner. Still haven’t watched since. And I’m okay with that.

Anyway, I quickly fell in love with Hallmark’s Sunday night series- When Calls The Heart. But I watched through Netflix and YouTube, so to be able to watch the season 4 premiere along with the rest of the #Hearties fam, I was super excited! I even live tweeted a bit too! The cast seems so sweet! Although, let’s be real, I will be watching the premiere over again, because twitter can be such a distraction! 😀

cpb6yn8vuaa4jjj1

I had a crazy weekend, so I didn’t get to host my usual real deal big Premiere Party, but I set up at little something in honor of my newest TV obsession’s big night!

Here is me watching at my little mock Abigail’s Café! 😉

This is what happens when you are a total party planning, tv watching/obsessing junkie/fangirl. I love doing this crap. Next time I’m going to go all out! I already started planning it! Friends who are fans of the show will be notified. 😉

Pinkie’s up and out!

I went with a collared blouse and a matching cardigan, then draped a pashmina overtop  to mirror the women of the frontier’s fashion. A low side bun and some dainty jewelry like Elizabeth! Shh you can’t tell I’m wearing yoga pants! 😉 (Next time I have to find a long skirt!)

Here is a sneak peek at last night’s episode and a Trailer for what’s to come! I think I feel a proposal coming!

You are my life, you are everything”- Jack Thornton making women swoon everywhere. #ThatCandleSceneTho

Can I please live in 1910! Please, please oh please! 😉

“Penny for your thoughts?” “I’ll give them to you for free.”

“You look absolutely beautiful.”

“Your never gonna lose me Elizabeth.”

Ah! I cannot!

When Calls The Heart airs Sunday nights @ 9pm on Hallmark Channel.

Seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix. Binge watch girl, you won’t regret it! 😉

Hallmark’s When Calls The Heart

I think I’ve made my love for Hallmark love stories pretty clear over the past few years here on this blog. Recently, I just got hooked on Hallmark’s Sunday night series-

600x600bb-851

I remember seeing commercials for it here and there and always wondering about it. It wasn’t until my Titi Patricia told me she watched it on Netflix and loved it, that I was like- uh oh time to binge. And binge I did. Just in time for the 4th season premiere this February 19th!

Funny thing is Netflix only has 2 seasons available so I had to search my but off and watch the third season on YouTube- audio edited and small screen. But hey when your obsession grows, you do what you gotta do. Hats off YouTube. #InternetLoopHoles

Let me hit you with a little Wiki info to catch you up to speed:

When Calls the Heart is a Canadian-American television drama series, inspired by Janette Oke’s book When Calls the Heart from her Canadian West Series.

It tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high-society life. She receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal-mining town in Western Canada which is located just south of Robb, Alberta. There, life is simple—but often fraught with challenges. Elizabeth charms mostly everyone in Coal Valley, except Royal North West Mounted Police Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing). He believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. The town of Coal Valley was renamed Hope Valley in Season 2 after the coal mine was closed.

cpb6yn8vuaa4jjj1

Living in this 1910 coal town, Elizabeth must learn the ways of the Canadian frontier movement if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own. Lori Loughlin portrays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, and her only son—along with 44 other miners—have recently been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith tested when they must go to work in the mine to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table, and compile a wage for the town’s teacher. -Wikipedia.

Needless to say I watched the first episode and fell in love with it’s heart. No pun intended. It’s a show about a small town, so immediately  I was invested. It’s set in 1910 and you know my love for older generations is strong. Aunt Becky…is in it…and she is a total badass, so um there’s that!

7c80f88662a19f44abbbb30ef3b495721

And don’t even get me started on the clothing….I am three seconds away from hosting a corset wearing party! I am obsessed!

when-calls-the-heart-elizabeth1

However, my favorite part of this show…as you know, has to be… the love story between Elizabeth and Jack. It starts off as a rocky relationship, there is clearly an attraction but they have a love/hate thing going on for a bit. This is when I realize that I may have been born in the wrong decade. Although I am a proud 90’s baby forever and always, the old ways of courtship is something that just warms my heart.

jack-quote1

The days of waiting and taking time to get to know someone’s heart. Not rushing. Simple dates. Simple glances. Simple touches. Oh the moments. The small looks and sayings make me swoon.

My sister in law always makes fun of me, “what do you expect a guy to do, come up to you and ask for your hand?”

Yes. Yes I do. When did that go out of style? 😉

Jack Thornton doesn’t always get it perfect, he stumbles like every guy, but there are times he shines brighter than the sun.

Let me count the ways:

Can we talk about how cute she is fanning herself after watching him chop wood?

“Elizabeth please do consider this a sign of courtship.” And he kisses her hand. OMG *swooning all over the place*

“That was just a guess.” #SLICKRICK

He painted a hidden message within the backdrop he painted for her class play, he also never told her he was the one who painted it.

“And I’ve been told no one messes with Ms. Thatcher.”-Pastor Frank talks to townsfolk about sharing the church with the school children. Everyone knows how protective Jack is over her.

The little arm rub @3:00 mark of the season 2 video. I’m obsessed!

The Mountie Christmas Ball he put together for her after they had to cancel their plans to go to the real one.

He built her a church/school.

“May I…”- he is always so polite.

He’s also made a few subtle innuendos to a more “physical” relationship.

After she gets trapped under some beams in the coal mine, Jack asks to take a look at her knee and later says something like- “Well now that I’ve seen your knees…” Sooo scandalous!  I love it! haha 😉

He also makes mention to having  to sleep in the barn, and Elizabeth apologizes for the uncomfortable conditions, while he asks “Was there another option?” and she just looks at him stunned and says “No.” It cracks me up how cute he is, he’s not disrespectful, he never tries to push the issue, but it’s clear he loves her and is interested in being with her. She flusters easily which makes it all the more sweeter. Their playfulness is adorable.

He gets jealous of any other man who is in her life-Billy Hamilton, or Charles, her “friendly” neighbor. If looks could kill.

“Keep your man busy, so he won’t be in a tizzy, I read Rosemary’s column too!” -Jack basically wants to help Elizabeth repair her new road house and she wants to be able to do it all herself, so she seeks some advice from Rosemary, who tells her to keep Jack busy with menial tasks this way he won’t bother her to help. YOUR MAN. I love it!

He bought land for them to build a house on as a surprise. He was a bit thrown when she bought her own road house, and wanted to come help her every chance he got.

Troubled Hearts

“Are you going to marry Constable Thornton?” Oh that smirk he has when he hears her answer! SO CUTE!

“You are going to make a terrific mother one day.”

They have many conversations about convincing/encouraging each other through kissing or keeping each other warm. –

I think you have enough fire wood for two years.”

“Well at least we’ll be nice and warm.”

“You know there are other ways to stay warm.”

Troubled Hearts

He is HER Mounty.

let-us-ride1

My favorite episode is when Elizabeth agrees to watch a neighbor’s kids while he is away and they get a chance to experience what life would be like if they got married and had children. There’s scene where he teaches her how to pump water which is adorable and there’s a scene where he watches her help the little boy go to sleep, and this scene below where he mentions starting a family one day and curling up by the fire with someone he loves.

jack-and-elizabeth-by-fire1

They are very close to getting engaged I think. He has a ring already, and I think he is just waiting for the right time. She certainly expects it. And I love how he kind of has this sweet joking charm. He likes to mess with her. But I have every hope that when he does propose it will be very special and a dream come true for Elizabeth. I just hope her high society snooty family will get on board.

I wonder if they will let them have a proper love scene. We have seen their courtship grow and blossom into a love that’s pure, safe and true. And I know that the show is very family friendly, but I for one believe that the fans deserve to see their love reach a new level. I can’t wait to see how they handle the proposal, the wedding and their new love life together.

no-finale-poll1

Someone caught the bouquet, we know what that means!

Another thing I adore is the comradery between the people of this little town, especially the women. They are so strong and really rally in times of joy and in times of need and tragedy. All the women have lost so much and have really  risen above and shown such grace and strength and hope in the face of such pain. Each woman is a force to be reckoned with. Abigail is truly the source of the town hope. She is such a total badass. She even leads them into the coal mine to help the women keep to help pay off their homes.

whencallstheheart28_thumb1

Elizabeth is taking on that nature as well, as she is proving to herself that she can step outside her comfort zone of wealthy privileged city life and do for herself. She is constantly telling Jack not to “check in on her.” But he does anyway, which I kind of love anyway, because he knows she’s capable but he just loves her so much that he needs to check in on her anyway.

When Calls The Heart

Elizabeth is such a beautiful spirit. She is a teacher and a writer, which I relate to and find a comfort in. And she believes women can do anything, which I am all for. She cares and loves deeply and is a character I truly admire. She teaches that girls can do anything!

whencallstheheart-s3-41906dcbi5bp1

I also love how female empowerment is being implemented throughout the show. Girls in the city life are taught to be wed by a certain age and take on a certain lifestyle of “taking care of their man.” Studying and becoming lawyers or holding their own titles are heard of seldom. There’s a woman lawyer who kicks ass!

When Calls the Heart 2001 Final Photo Assets

And Rosemary a theater Mongol serves as an advice columnist in town who really throws the women for a loop when she urges them to expect things from their men instead of allowing their men to expect from them. One of her quotes were “There are so many things in this world that are taboo, a love between a woman and her husband, should not be one of them.” Yea girl. Preach.

f24bd6c7b89e0f020cda8ff893dc69571

In a nutshell. I love this show. Season 4, I’m ready for ya! I am officially a fan. Can I join the #hearties? I can #partylikeaheartie

Hallmark Channel; My Guilty Pleasure

So here it goes, I’m about to come clean. I love crappy movies! There I said it. And by crappy I just mean movies that don’t get noticed or deemed “good” by society and the media.

TV networks like Lifetime and the Hallmark Channel, are known for their romance movies.

Yet I feel they get completely underrated. Why… because they are TV movies? If so, I beg to differ, TV movies are so damn good!

Hallmark’s slogan reads…

“The Heart of TV”

(And I’ll prove to you why that’s true!)

This summer I’ve been working my way through my on demand Hallmark movies list. So far I’ve watched 5 movies. And although some were better then others, I enjoyed each one in a different way, and for different reasons. Hey, give me a guy, a girl, and a love story, and chances are I’ll find something to love about it. The plotlines are sweet and there is always someone from some other WB/CW or Fox show that you will recognize. Always! It’s the best, lol.

Nearlyweds

(From left to right) Britt Irvin, Jessica Parker Kennedy and Danielle Panabaker play three best friends who must decide if they will make their nearly-marriages into real ones.

When Erin (Danielle Panabaker), Casey (Jessica Parker Kennedy) and Stella (Britt Irvin) discover that a paperwork error has annulled all their marriages, they reassess their relationships with their new nearly- husbands. Erin finds herself competing with mother-in-law Renee (Naomi Judd) for the loyalty of David (Ryan Kennedy), Casey questions Nick’s (Travis Milne) commitment, and Stella deals with balancing her desire for a career with Mark’s (Steve Bacic) expectation for a stay at home wife. With the pressures of marriage all around, all three couples must again decide whether to make the long walk down the aisle…or to walk out the door and start over. The three friends navigate the highs and lows of their new marriages together, but ultimately must make their own decisions about the futures of these relationships.

Midnight Masquerade

Young businesswoman Elyse Samford’s (Autumn Reeser) life takes a turn when she inherits Samford Candy, a multi-billion dollar corporation, from her retired father (Richard Burgi). A trademark infringement lawsuit against a rival company brings Elyse to Higgins Attorneys and Sons, where Rob Carelli (Christopher Russell), a young, too-nice-for-his-own-good lawyer, is bullied by his boss, firm founder Carter Higgins (Chris Gillett), and his two arrogant sons (Damon Runyan and Danny Smith). Despite his workplace woes, Rob becomes instantly smitten with Elyse.
With Halloween just around the corner, Elyse invites the Higgins law firm staff to an opulent masked Halloween costume ball. Rob obeys an order to remain in the office working that night, but has a change of heart when his spunky, 12-year old niece, Ruby (Helen Colliander), convinces him to attend the ball wearing a prince costume. After a magnificent waltz and magical exchange with the handsome “prince,” Elyse yearns to locate this mysterious man and hopefully find the romance her life has been missing.

Recipe For Love

RECIPE FOR LOVE - An earnest, culinary school hopeful, clashes with a big shot celebrity chef when she is assigned to ghostwrite his cookbook. As they struggle to get through each recipe together, their mismatched cooking styles and misunderstood pasts threaten to send the cookbook up in flames. But after they both dig deeper into the heart of their shared passion, a romance becomes more likely to spark. Lauren Hennessey (Danielle Panabaker) has always loved to cook and is a proud perfectionist at her job at “Food & Entertainment Magazine’s” test kitchen while she dreams of being able to finally afford culinary school in Paris. When her boss offers her a bonus if she agrees to ghostwrite the cookbook of a difficult celebrity chef, Lauren sees her dream becoming a reality as soon as she can tame the notorious bad boy chef in question, Dexter Durant (Shawn Roberts). Slowly peeling back the layers of Dexter’s tough-guy persona, she starts seeing a different, vulnerable side to this big-shot chef. Suddenly, their dueling culinary styles become the perfect complement in the kitchen and an attraction between them starts to boil over. As the cookbook nears completion, Dexter and a scheming young chef must face off in a final cook-off, judged by celebrity Peter DeLuise (as himself). Will Dexter win the competition and Lauren’s love? *Loved this one!

How To Fall In Love

c85396a93d0191dc5f0808894c402575[1]

Still suffering from the ugly-duckling syndrome that branded his youth, Harold White (Eric Mabius) hires Annie Hayes (Brooke D’Orsay), the pretty and popular girl he knew in high school, to be his dating coach and help him shed his wallflower approach to romance. Annie even enlists her friend Kim (Kathy Najimy), a waitress at a local diner, to be Harold’s practice date. Annie draws Harold out of his shell and teaches him to win over a new love interest with the help of their shared passion for classic love songs. But when sparks unexpectedly fly between “student” and “teacher,” both Harold and Annie must learn how to make up for past mistakes if they’re going to hold onto true love. *Loved this one!

**************************************

Although Hallmark movies can be at times filled with cliché romance, cheesy and often cringe worthy acting moments, and the dialogue can be a little too fairytale, or overdone. I enjoy them. The endings leave some to be desired, as they seem to have a good storyline and great potential but they force a wrap up and tend to fall short. Sometimes I feel a movie is so good and then it wraps up so quickly and it often ends with a wedding and I’m just like wait a minute didn’t these people just meet? So unrealistic. Although I have to admit, when I write my love stories marriage is usually where my story tends to drive toward. In many ways I think I love Hallmark movies so much, because I can see writing something like that, myself. Hell, I probably already have. I would totally jump on the chance to write a Hallmark movie. Because in the mist of all the things you can find wrong, there are moments of pure heart. There is love. There is story. There are characters that you for some reason are drawn too, characters you can relate to, characters that you care about. These movies pass the time, they are relaxing and funny. They are entertaining and light, you don’t have to think, you just have to enjoy and laugh along the way. They can help you escape from a long hard day, and unwind. These movies are truly the heart of TV.
