A Broken Heart For Christmas Pt. 6

Read Part 5 HERE.

broken heart for christmas

Lucy tossed and turned all night long, replaying her conversation with Dean over and over in her head.

She wakes up the next morning with what she could only classify as a broken hearted hangover.

Seeing him again was both electrifying and painful. And now she knows she’s bound to run into him again in their small town, their first meeting didn’t go so well. But deep down Lucy knew that even then, oddly enough, she still wanted to be around him, and couldn’t wait to be in his presence. Lucy walks downstairs to meet the family in their kitchen for breakfast as the day of Christmas festivities will soon begin.

*****

Lucy and the family are in the town square for the carnival.

She looks at her phone as sees its 11:30 a.m.

She smiles and dials Kinsley.

“Hello?”

“Hey, you on your way?” Lucy says anxiously awaiting her friend’s arrival.

“Already here.” Kinsley says walking up behind Lucy.

Lucy turns and runs over to her, giving her a hug.

“Whoa, it’s like you haven’t seen me in a year or something?” Kinsley says laughing.

“I have some things to fill you in on, and I may need some advice too.”

“Uh oh. Ok, lay it on me.”

“Not here, later, we’ll talk a walk?”

“Sure.” Kinsley says noticing as Dean walks past and over to his dad who is setting up a game station for the kids.

As Lucy sees Dean from the corner of her eye, her heart beat quickens. She smiles and walks away to the other side of the square.

Kinsley walks over to Dean.

“Hey Sanders!” Kinsley calls out in her usual rambunctious tone.

Dean turns, his eyes widen seeing the familiar face.

“Kinsley Jones, holy crap how are you?”

He embraces her in a friendly hug.

“Not bad. You?”

“Been better,” Dean says nodding knowingly.

“Ah still pining over Lucy, huh?”

She points over to where Dean’s eyes fall on Lucy who is helping to set up a bake sale table.

Dean sighs as he gives Kinsley a stern look.

“Hey I just call it like I see it.”

“I’m the bad guy right? I broke her heart. Never mind the fact that I asked her to marry me. Yea. No one ever hears my side of the story. I loved that girl. So much. You know how rare it is, for a guy that age to want to get married?”

“Maybe that was part of the problem.” Kinsley says.

Dean ponders as Kinsley walks off to say hi to some old neighbors, Dean locks eyes with Lucy from across the way. She looks away after a beat. Dean sighs and walks over.

“Hey.” Dean says.

“Hi.”

“Will you walk with me?” Dean says his puppy dog eyes melting her.

“Yea. Sure.” Lucy joins him as they work through the town, seeing all the fun rides, games and stands.

Snow slowly melting, Trees decorated, the smell of hot chocolate filling the air, as Christmas carols are heard through town.

“I’m sorry about yesterday. I had an entirely different idea of how that conversation would go. I have always wondered when I’d get to see you face to face again, and I am sorry for how I acted.”

“I’m sorry too.”

“Lucy I get that this is hard for you…it’s hard for me to, seeing you, being around you after all these years. But we don’t have to hate each other. I’m just trying to make the best of the holiday.”

“I don’t hate you. Do you hate me?”

“No. Far from it.” Dean says looking at Lucy as he leans a little closer to her.

Dean’s phone rings.

“Hello?”

“Hey son, I need you to run home and just pick up my tool box for me.”

“Sure pop, I’ll take care of it.

Dean turns to Lucy.

“Hey I have to run to get my dad something. You wanna come with me?

“Oh um…Okay sure.”

Lucy and Dean get to his house to find it empty.

He grabs his dad’s tool box from under the sink and turns to Lucy.

“Can I get you anything?” Dean inquires.

Lucy stands waiting in the arch way between the living room and kitchen.

“No. I’m good thanks.”

She gives him a small smirk.

He stops and stares.

“What?” Lucy notices as Dean’s eyes look her over and she begins to feel anxious.

He walks over to her pulling her into a kiss.

Lucy is shocked to say the least. She goes to pull away but Dean grabs her waist and pulls her back in, deepening the kiss. Lucy reciprocates her arms wrapping around his neck.

Dean pulls away looking up over their heads, as Lucy sees the mistletoe.

“You don’t mess with tradition, not in Oakland Valley,” he says smiling.

“Is that all that was?” Lucy asks breathless.

In one swift move Dean lifts her onto the counter kissing her yet again, leaning into their embrace.

“What do you think?” He says in between kisses.

Soon enough Lucy and Dean are in bed together, as they kiss, they continue their love for each other, finding familiar territory.

A little ways later…

Lucy and Dean lay still, trying to catch their breath.

“Wow.” Lucy says.

“That was…that…was really good,” Dean says looking over at her.

“Mmm Hmm.” Lucy says, smiling brightly.

“Is it me or was that better than I remember? I mean we were always really good together but this was more intense than usual.” Dean says staring at Lucy as his eyes wander.

Lucy smiles covering her face in embarrassment.

Dean laughs, rolling his eyes at her.

“We had sex…you and me we just had sex…” Lucy says still in slight denial.

“Yeah pretty much.”

“How did that even happen?” She says baffled that they could go from zero communication to ripping each other’s clothes off in a matter of a few hours.

“Come on Luc- we were never really good with keeping our hands to ourselves. Well I mean at least I never was. Put me in a room with you and those eyes- who knows what can happen?” Dean says raising his eyebrows.

Lucy stares at him, her skin flushed, her hair a wreck, her heart beat accelerated. There’s a feeling of blissful happiness within this moment, as she stares into the eyes of the man she loves. And soon she remembers, the pain, and her smile fades.

“Why’d you do it?” Lucy says glancing over at Dean with sad eyes.

“Why’d I have sex with you?” Dean asks confused. “I kinda don’t think I have a choice, when it comes to you. It’s not something I can control,” he says smirking.

“No. Why’d you end it between us?” Lucy asks, nervous for the answer to the question she’s had running through her mind for the better part of their years broken up.

“I knew you wanted more than Oakland Valley. And you deserved to explore without having me around to distract you. I knew if we stayed together I’d hold you back.” Dean says sighing as he looks away.

“Ok, I guess that’s admirable, but that should have been my decision. Not you just deciding what’s best for me.”

“I thought I was being selfish trying to keep you in this relationship. I just wanted you to be happy, in whatever way possible. Your happiness was always my goal. And for a long while it seemed like maybe I wasn’t the one that could make that happen.”

“How can you say that? I was always happy when I was with you. I loved you.”

“I loved you. So much. But Lucy I asked you to marry me, and you said no.”

“I didn’t say no.”

“But you didn’t say yes either.”

“We were young, ok it didn’t have to be all at once, all or nothing. We had time to wait, or at least I thought we did.” She says her anger spiking.

“Lucy, I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt you. My decision was never a punishment.” Dean confesses.

“Did you really have to join the army? I mean I get it- outta sight outta mind but, but you deploying ruined me. One minute you’re telling me how much you love me and how you wanna be with me forever and the next you were just gone. I didn’t know where you were. If you were okay. There was no form of closure.” Lucy says her heart spilling into Dean’s hands.

“It wasn’t about doing it to get you off my mind. In fact you were the only thing on my mind, every second of every day Lucy. Enlisting was about doing something that I knew I could be proud of myself for. Doing something worthy. If I couldn’t be your husband, I figured at least I could serve my country.”

“Let me ask you this. If I had said yes, would you have enlisted then?”

“Probably not right away, but eventually yes, after we got married.”

Lucy gasps, then sighs.

“Even if you would have said yes, it’s not like you’d give up on the dreams you had. I knew you wanted to move to New York and be a writer. I knew that was still there, still a big part of your soul. And I would never have asked you to give that up. So I figured while you were off being brilliant, I could do something to make you proud.”

“I have never not been proud of you.” Lucy says, her tone softening.

Dean looks at her, he takes her hand in his.

“I’m sorry,” he says.

“I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that you were just okay with going off in different parts of the world and not being with each other. That’s what made your decision feel like a punishment.” Lucy says trying to understand.

“I was hurt. Part of me knew you were right, that we were too young, but the other part of me didn’t care. I just knew I wanted to be with you, and sure you saying no was definitely a bruise to my ego, but it was also a wakeup call. And I knew that time was what you needed, and distance. I figured I’d do a tour or two and we’d be back together in no time. After I proposed and you said no, it was like a reflex for me to push you away. I knew I had made a poor decision, the minute after you left my room that day, in tears. I came after you, only to find all of our memories scattered across the dorm hall. I knew you’d never forgive me, and I figured if you really wanted to be with me, you’d reach out, somehow.”

“You broke up with me. I didn’t think you wanted me to reach out.” Lucy says confused.

“I don’t know. I guess I just thought that in some strange way we’d always end up back together. I thought you’d fight for me.”

“Did you fight for me?” Lucy says challenging him.

“Every day Lucy and you know that. You know how much I loved you. How much I wanted you. I wasn’t exactly shy about it.”

Lucy looks at him.

“What do you want, now? I mean I don’t know what I’m supposed to do or say, or feel. Where do you want us to go from here?” Lucy asks.

Dean looks at her, he walks over and pulls her into a kiss.

“I don’t ever wanna watch you walk away from me again,” he says.

******

Town neighbors begin to get wind that both Lucy and Dean are home and begin to rally around them.

“Sing! Sing!” the crowd hollers.

Lucy looks at them.

Ava looped arm in arm with her new boyfriend, yells “Hey you don’t monkey with tradition, and I think this town deserves some spirit from the two of you. You haven’t been home in years.”

The crowd continues to cheer as Lucy’s family rallies behind it.

Dean turns to Lucy, “Whattaya say Luc- how about one song for all times sake?”

“I don’t know…” Lucy says visibly uncertain.

“Come on, we used to sing together all the time.” Dean says strumming his guitar as the town mayor heads one to him.

“There’s a lot we used to do together.” Lucy says.

They share a heated look for a second, Dean sighs as Lucy looks away quickly.

“Sing!” the crowd screams again.

“Okay, okay, one song.” Lucy says.

Lucy and Dean get up in front of the whole town, on stage in the center of the town’s square to sing as Dean plays guitar.

The crowd sings along to I’ll Be Home For Christmas as Lucy begins to feel completely at home, something she hasn’t felt in a long time.

When the song finishes Lucy walks off stage in the opposite direction as Dean goes to grab a cup of coffee, Kinsley comes over to grab one too.

Dean goes into his inner jacket pocket for his wallet and a small black box falls to the floor.

Kinsley bends down to pick it up for him.

Dean tries to play it cool.

“Uh…Thanks,” he says taking the box and putting it back into his pocket, as his eyes search the crowd for Lucy.

“Oh my god,” Kinsley says, in shock. “Is that-? That’s a ring. For Lucy.”

“Please don’t.” Dean says looking at her with pleading eyes.

“You’re gonna propose?” she asks completely thrown.

“I’m not exactly rushing to put my heart on the line again Kin. I’ve had enough rejection from that girl to last a lifetime.”

“And yet you’re still holding onto that ring…let’s be honest here Dean you came here with a goal…you knew she’d be home didn’t you?”

“I may…have heard it through the Oakland Valley grape vine.”

“So…what are you waiting for?”

“I’ve thought about her every second of every day since we broke up…do you know how hard it has been to try have a life worth living without her? I can’t take any more disappointments.”

“Well if it’s any constellation it hasn’t exactly been a picnic for her either.”

“Yes but see I’d never know that because she was never one to tell me how she felt. I was lucky I got an “I love you” out of her.”

“Is that really how you feel?” Lucy says coming up from behind them.

“I’m gonna go, you two really need to talk,” Kinsley says walking off.

Dean sighs hanging his head.

“I’m sorry you had to hear that. I was just venting.”

“About me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry. Tell me the truth. Is that how you feel?”

“Sometimes. A lot of the time.”

Lucy’s face falls.

“Well then I’m the one who’s sorry. I never meant to make you feel that way, I promise. I guess I just always felt like I needed to keep my distance, because…because well you always felt too good to be true.”

“Yea. I know the feeling,” he cups her face looking into her eyes.

“Dean-”

“I love you. It has always been you. But I can’t keep going on like this. Being strangers who pine over each other. I’m tired of being miserable. I’m tired of being afraid to come home because the thought of losing you again makes me just continue to stay away. I’m tired of living with half a heart. I want you. I want you and me together forever. And if that scares you then tough. I know you love me, I can feel it in the way you look at me, in the way we move together. And after all these years to still be able to know these things and say these things, has got to stand for something. You had your time, you had your distance. You got three years to miss me. So I’m only gonna ask you this one more time. Because this is it Luc- this is our last shot.”

Lucy looks at him.

Dean stares into her eyes questioning her mind.

He smirks knowingly and kneels down on one knee.

“Lucy Michaelson you drive me absolutely insane. From the moment I met you, I looked into those green eyes of yours, even though we were young I knew you were someone special. Your eyes drew me in, and I knew I could look into those eyes, for my whole life. You have tested my loyalty and my love for years. And because of you I know that I am capable of fighting for what I want, for what’s important. I love you, crazy anxieties and all. And I want you to be my wife. So…instead of being so worried and scared of the future why don’t we just embrace it?”

Dean opens up the small ring box as Lucy gasps, clasping her hands over her mouth.

“Will you marry me, damn it? Just marry me? And we can figure this whole life thing out together.”

Lucy begins crying and laughing as she kneels down to meet him in a kiss.

Dean pulls away looking at her questioning.

“Is that a yes?”

“It’s a hell yes,” she says laughing. “And for what its worth, I’ve missed you too.”

“I figured,” he shrugs in cocky fashion, as he winks. “I think we should seal the deal with this-”

He says as he slides the ring on her finger.

Lucy smiles.

“Oh my god, baby it’s gorgeous. Is this- my ring?”

“You never did get to see it.”

“It’s perfect. You kept it all this time?”

Dean nods.

“Of course I did babe. Let’s just say I had a feeling our story wasn’t over yet, I knew one of these days my charm would wear you down.”

Lucy smiles kissing him as everyone around cheers and rushes to congratulate them.

“It’s about damn time!” Kinsley screams as everyone laughs.

A few minutes later Lucy walks off to the side, to make a phone call.

“Hello?”

“Cami, I have some news I think you’re gonna wanna hear.” Lucy says as Dean walks up behind her wrapping his arms around her waist. He kisses her cheek.

Lucy holds her phone out as she turns on video chat, showing off her engagement ring.

“I’m engaged!”

Cami screams.

“Oh MY GOD!”

Lucy laughs.

“Dean this is Cami, Cami this is-”

“College boyfriend Dean, I know.”

“Hi Cami, nice to meet you, I’ve heard good things. But College boyfriend? Really that’s what I got demoted to?” Dean says looking at Lucy.

Cami looks on confused.

“Well I mean we did officially start dating in college so that’s not entirely untrue.”

“Wait am I missing something?” Cami says, confused.

“I may have lied, a bit. I kind of implied that I met Dean when I was in college, and that it was just a college romance. But in fact, Dean and I grew up together here in Oakland, we were best friends. I mean but we never really thought about dating until College.”

“Um… really… we never thought about dating? I sure as hell did,” Dean says.

“Then why didn’t you say something, all these years?”

“Because I had to wait for you. You had to be ready. I know you very well Lucy.”

“You sure do. I love you,” Lucy says.

“I love you.”

She leans in to kiss him.

“And hey look-now you’ve been promoted to fiancé.”

“Lucky me.”

Lucy smiles kissing him.

Cami still on the line, starts laughing, “Wow you guys are disgustingly cute, when’s the wedding?”

*************

Lucy and Dean steal a moment away from the celebrating, to be alone. They walk through town, Dean finds a quiet spot and pulls Lucy to him by the waist, he kisses her slowly.

Lucy in turn pulls him to her by his coat collar as she reciprocates.

She turns to him.

“What?” he says, knowing the wheels are starting to spin in her head.

“Are you going to have to deploy again, anytime soon?”

“No. I put in a good amount of years. It’s time for me to settle down, make some plans. And finally marry the love of my life. I’ve waited a long time for you.”

Lucy kisses him.

***************

*One Year Later…

Lucy and Dean are in NYC in her old apartment. The tree glistening, the fireplace crackling, two glasses of wine on the coffee table. They both sit on her couch, in front of an open laptop; skyping with their family back in Oakland.

“Are you coming home for the holidays?” Lucy’s Mom asks.

Lucy and Dean look at each other

“No,” they say in unison.

The family looks sad.

“We’re coming home for good,” Lucy says and Dean smiles brightly kissing her.

Everyone cheers in complete shock and joy.

Dean and Lucy pack boxes as her apartment slowly because emptier and emptier. Wedding rings glisten upon their hands as they move boxes toward the door to be taken out. Lucy places a few last minute items into a box, as a focusing of their wedding photo is displayed.

As movers begin to come in, the remnants of the apartment begin decreasing as a lonely Christmas tree without any ornaments is the only thing left. Underneath the tree lies a gift box. Lucy and Dean stand in the middle of the living room, his hands cross her stomach as he nuzzles into her neck.

“You ready Mrs. Sanders, Kinsley’s downstairs, she has the car all packed up.”

“Yes I’m ready Mr. Sanders, let’s go home,” she turns kissing him softly.

“Come on sexy we have a lot of work to do for the new house,” Dean says taking her hand and leading her to the door.

“I know, I get to decorate!” Lucy says excitedly.

“Oh no, I meant we gotta start making babies, because we have a lot of rooms to fill,” he says his eyes lighting up.

“Oh.” Lucy says rubbing her hands along Dean’s chest “Okay,” she smiles, raising her eyebrows, she kisses him, wrapping her hands around his neck, as he moves closer to her.

“You better walk away from me, before we never get out of here, girl.” Dean mutters into her lips as she continues to kiss him.

Lucy cocks her head back with a laugh.

“God, I love you so much,” he says more seriously, looking into her eyes.

“I love you. So much.” Lucy says cupping his face and looking back at him with admiration. She gives him a quick peck on the lips and pulls him toward the door.

A few seconds later Lucy rushes back in and grabs the box under the tree.

In the car ride home, Lucy opens the gift box, in it lies a framed black and white photo of Silvia and Lucy. Lucy is wearing a wedding dress. The box also holds a card that reads-

Dear Kind Eyes,

Here’s just a little reminder of our friendship which has blossomed over the past year. I was so honored to be able to share in your special day. I’m so thrilled that we managed to keep in touch. I knew that you and your true love were meant to be from the way your eyes told your story. And being able to witness such a love in person brought me back to a time I remember well. He’s a good one, hold onto him tight. And never be afraid to love with all your heart.

God Bless, See you soon,

Love,

Silvia.

Lucy smiles as she looks over Silvia’s gift, Dean looks over from the driver’s seat, a sleeping Kinsley in the back. Dean takes Lucy’s hand and kisses her wedding rings. Lucy smiles leaning over and kissing his cheek.

As the car continues to drive down the journey of a new life with the man she’s always loved. Their future in front of them.

A Broken Heart For Christmas Pt. 4

broken heart for christmas

Lucy sits in the airport her stomach a ball of nerves, as she anxiously awaits her flight.

She pulls her cell phone out and dials.

“Hello?” The familiar voice of the other end, somehow manages to calm her.

“Kin-?”

“Hey love, what’ up? Where are you? I just got in and was surprised you weren’t here.”

“I’m at the airport. I’m going home.”

“Wow. So you finally decided to grab the bull by the horns, huh? Your mom must have gotten to you.”

“Well it was a bit of a mixture of my mom and Cami. Cami thinks that I’m still holding onto everything that happened with Dean.”

“Well aren’t you?”

“Oh come on, not you too Kin? You’re the one person I can count to calm me down.”

“Look I’m not trying to upset you Luc-. But let’s be honest. I’m the only one here in New York City that can say I knew both you and Dean. I’m the only one who knows what happened between you two back home. The only one who truly saw how you were when you were together. I know that you need closure.”

“And you never thought to express these concerns over the past 3 years since Dean and I have been broken up.”

“Well… I like to let you breathe. I think when you find things out on your own time, you listen to your heart more. I also know that you and only you can decide when you are ready to dive deeper.”

“Well aren’t you just full of surprises?” Lucy says slightly rolling her eyes.

“This is something you’ve been avoiding for years, it’s time… you’re ready. Whether you think so or not, you’re ready.”

“I hope so. I kinda wish you were coming home with me. I could use some back up.”

“Well you are in luck, I just bought my ticket. I’ll be there about 11:30 tomorrow morning.”

“Really?” Lucy asks excited, yet relieved.

“Well I’m always the one that goes home for the holidays, it’s you who I have to drag kicking and screaming, remember?”

Flight 326 to Oakland Valley Minnesota is now boarding, a woman’s voice is heard over the loud speaker.

Lucy sighs heavily and stands, heading towards the terminal.

“Ok well… that’s me. I should go.”

“Ok. Just remember to breathe, you got this. Have a safe flight.” Kinsley says her confidence in Lucy shining through.

“Wait…Truth time?” Lucy states.

“Shoot.” Kinsley notes in response.

“Kin, can I do this? What if he comes back, what if by some cryptic way of faith he’s back in town this year. Can I really do this? Could I really face him?”

“Yes. You can. I promise you.”

Lucy sighs.

“Lucy, what are you so afraid of?” Kinsley pushes for a hidden truth.

“I’m afraid that if I see his face again, I’m just going to fall apart.”

“Well that’s what best friends, chocolate, and wine are for. To pick you back up, when the world knocks you down. You’ve got this. Now go.”

Lucy hangs up her phone and walks toward the entrance to the terminal. Her heart beat quickens as she hands her ticket in.

On the plane Lucy sits at a window seat. She checks her watch; 9:30 p.m.

“Ok, Oakland Valley, Minnesota is a 2 ½ hour plan ride. I should get there by midnight,” Lucy whispers to herself. “2 ½ hours to prepare myself. Ok you can do this.”

An elderly woman finds her seat next to Lucy as she smiles kindly, Lucy reciprocates.

A stewardess comes over soon after.

“Hi, thank you for flying with us today, please keep your seats and strap yourselves in for take-off. Can I get you ladies anything at the moment?”

“Yes, a glass of red wine would be nice.” Lucy says leaning back and sighing.

The elderly lady near her notices.

“And for you ma’am?” The stewardess asks.

“Oh I’m quite alright, thank you.”

“Ok, so just one red wine, coming right up,” the stewardess says with a smile and walking off.

Lucy looks over nodding forcing a smile toward the stewardess.

Lucy’s body and mind are restless, she sighs trying to calm down and settle in.

“Nervous flyer?” The elderly woman says looking over at Lucy.

“No, not really. I just have a possibly anxious situation waiting for me, back in my home town.”

“Ah, an ex- lover, I presume?”

Lucy nods.

“Is it that obvious?” Lucy inquires.

“Not to many. But I’ve killed long. I’ve loved. I’ve lost. I’ve met plenty people in my lifetime. When you’re as old as I am, you learn how to read people. You my dear have kind eyes. People with kind eyes see the world differently. They believe the very best in people. So often so, that sometimes their hearts get broken pretty easily.”

“What would you suggest for someone in my position?”

“Continue doing just what you’ve been doing. Love, leap, it’s the only thing that makes you truly feel alive. Everything else; money, status, materialistic things, it all goes away. Don’t doubt yourself so much either, trust in yourself, trust in your ability to get everything you want. These days in age, women can have it all, it doesn’t have to be job or marriage, anymore.”

“How did you-”

The elderly woman smiles kindly, knowingly.

“You’re a good read, right.” Lucy says smiling.

“You keep being yourself. Follow your heart, you’ll be just fine….” The elderly woman says waiting for Lucy to reveal her name.

“Lucy.”

“Lucy… hmmm, what a beautiful name. You know there’s a Saint Lucy. She’s known as the protector of sight. In fact Lucy hails from Lucia which comes from the Latin word “lux” which means “light”. It’s funny how things just come full circle don’t they, kind eyes?”

“My mom actually named me after her, she said that when I was born she looked into my eyes and just knew my name was Lucy.”

“Mother’s intuition never lies.”

“Do you have any children, Mrs…” Lucy drowns off realizing she still has yet to find out this woman’s name.

“You can call me Silvia. And yes I do have children, two daughters-twins.”

“Ah so you’re no stranger to dealing with heartbroken women?” Lucy laughs slightly.

“No, I am most certainly not. But my advice to you, came straight from personal experience. When I was young, I’d say around my late teens to early 20’s, kinda like you. I fell madly in love with a handsome boy. A few short years later, he became the father of my daughters. He was a solider. I found out I was pregnant, just after he deployed. And I wrote him a letter telling him the good news, and promising him that when he got home, we’d get married. He used to ask me jokingly to marry him throughout our relationship, I would laugh and tell him we were just a bit too young, but in good time. I never heard back from him. About a month or so went by. As my little babies grew, so did my worry. Soon enough I was delivered the news that he has been killed in battle.”

Lucy stills, unable to hide her shock.

“Silvia I- I’m so sorry. I don’t have any words worth saying.”

“I’m not telling you this to make you feel sad, I’m telling you to help you understand, that sometimes you have to take the risk, if you truly love someone, trust in that love to last you through any hardships. We always regret the what- ifs. If you love him, you have to fight for him. And in turn if he fights for you, you know it was meant to be.”

“But what if he doesn’t. What if he never really did?”

“Maybe he just wasn’t given a chance?”

“How do you find the strength to face the pain though, I mean you lost the father of your children and still managed to raise them and move on with your life. I on the other hand feel like I’ve just stopped in time ever since Dean broke my heart. In that time I graduated college, moved out of my hometown, started an independent magazine, and yet I still feel like I’m stuck living in this painful nightmare. And then I hear your story and I feel like I am just being so completely childish and selfish. That none of this really matters. My problems seem so trivial. And here I am boring you with them.”

“Oh hunny, you most certainly are not. Everyone goes through different challenges in life. Different things that affect them in different ways. Things that shape who they are and who they are to become. As you get older you realize how to accept things more, take things as they come, and value the time you did have with the people you were lucky enough to love. I may have lost the love of my life young, but I got to experience a love like no other.”

Lucy smiles slightly, her eyes watering a bit, she looks down.

“Tell me something Lucy, this Dean boy your talking about, did you love him?”

“Yes, very much. Sometimes, I think I still do.”

Silvia smiles, “And what made you fall in love with him?”

Lucy stills, she hasn’t let herself think about that in a long time.

“He knew my heart. I could go to him for anything. He was my best friend. And he had this way of looking at me that would just give me butterflies, every time.” Lucy smiles, remembering.

“Oh, he sounds like a good one.” Silvia says smiling brightly.

“Yea, he was.” Lucy wipes a tear as it falls and sighs.

“I’d hang in there a little longer. You may not know it yet, but I think your happy ending is right around the corner, just you wait.”

Lucy smiles.

“Thank you Silvia, you are an incredible soul.”

“As are you, kind eyes.”

Lucy smiles, turning toward the window, she looks out into the dark night sky, and twinkling stars as she has a flash back to a time when she and Dean took a trip to Vegas together.

Dean sits next to Lucy on the plane, he takes her hand as she looks at him and smiles.

“So you excited?” he asks.

“Yes. I hope we win some money.”

“Yea that would be nice. I mean I’d like to put a ring on that finger of yours.”

Lucy blushes.

“Lucy.” Dean calls staring at her.

“What?” she says hanging her head and avoiding eye contact.

“Why does that bother you so much, that I’d like to marry you some day?”

“It doesn’t bother me, I just-”

“Really? Because every time I mention it, you avoid it, you avoid me,” he says sinking in his seat to catch her eyes with his.

“I don’t think we’re there yet, I mean we’re still young.”

“Okay, understandable. Is that it though, or is there something else?”

Lucy looks over at him.

“There’s nothing else. I love you.”

She leans in and kisses him, cupping his face.

Dean cups her face in return as he deepens the kiss.

“Can I ask you a question?” Dean says pulling away.

Lucy looks at him.

“Don’t worry, it’s not will you marry me?” he laughs.

“Ok… what is it?”

Dean kisses her teasingly.

She looks at him.

“Have you ever fooled around on an airplane?”

Lucy’s eyes go wide.

“Dean, we can’t,” she looks around to notice if anyone was listening.

“Sure we can,” he smirks kissing her again, and grabbing her hand he stands up. “Follow me.”

Lucy gets up and follows after him as they walk back towards the bathroom.

Dean opens the door and Lucy runs in. He looks around before following, sliding the door lock as the occupied sign displays on the outside.

He looks at Lucy and smiles, raising his eyebrows as she laughs.

“I can’t believe you. Are we really gonna do this, here?”

“Hell yes. Come here.” Dean says pulling her waist to him and kissing her.

“Red wine, ma’am?”

Lucy is brought back to reality, as the stewardess hands her a glass of wine.

“Thank you,” Lucy says with a faint smile, “I’m gonna need this,” she whispers to herself taking a gulp.

A Broken Heart For Christmas Pt. 3

Read Part 2 HERE.

broken heart for christmas

Back at her apartment Lucy sits in front of her fireplace, the wood burning a golden amber as the smell of fresh pine floods the house. Back home it was always a tradition for Lucy and her family to have a real Christmas tree every year. So ever since she left she made sure to continue the tradition. It just made New York City feel like home.

As she sits there sipping a glass of red wine, trying to wind down from the day and the added stress that’s been weighing on her, Lucy’s mind begins to wander.

“Maybe you just don’t want to move on,” she hears Cami’s voice echoing loudly in her head.

Lucy gets up and walks over to her hall closet, she opens the door and takes out a small decorative box, walking back to her couch, she sits down, pondering whether or not she can actually face the contents inside.

Upon opening the box, pictures of her past hit her like a ton of bricks.

Lucy takes a deep breath in as she picks up a photo of her and Dean, spending Christmas together and smiling brightly.

Lucy’s phone rings, disrupting her walk down memory lane.

“Hey mom,” she says answering it.

“Hi hunny, how was the rest of your day?”

Her mom stands at her kitchen counter mixing a batter for fresh cookies. There is flour everywhere, and her Christmas apron is tied around her waist.

Lucy smiles to herself as she hears the faint sound of Christmas songs   playing in her childhood home, over the phone.

“Stressful…yours?” Lucy says with a slight sigh.

“Well you know – the usual – busy Christmas season at the shop, everyone loves their real trees!”

“Of course, I know the feeling well,” Lucy says walking over to her own tree and feeling a branch. Leaning in she smells the fresh pine scent.

“How’s the tree stock this year?” she asks.

“It’s wonderful we’ve got Norway Spruce, Douglas Fir, Noble Fir, Cedar, Monterey Pine, and Sierra Redwood, your father has a really good selection this year.”

“Oh well that’s good. I’m sure the town is really excited about that!” She makes an effort to be cheerful.

“Hunny have you decided if you’ll come home? I really truly think it’ll be good for you.”

Lucy looks over at the photo laying on her coffee table, along with the rest of the box of mementos she shared with Dean over the years.

“You promise he won’t be there?” Lucy asks, the pain in her voice evident.

“Oh sweetie, I can’t make promises based on other people’s actions, you know that. All’s I can truly attest to is that he hasn’t been home since he left. But I can promise that we will have the most magical Christmas together as a family. Just like old times.”

“Just like old times, huh?” Lucy ponders with a smile, looking at the twinkling silver lights on her tree.

“Mm Hmm.”

“Not for nothing, I could really use one of Grandma Addie’s famous s’mores hot chocolates, right about now.”

“Oh perfect! …Does that mean you’ll come?”

“I guess so,” Lucy laughs.

“Hunny I can’t tell you how happy that makes me! I can’t wait to tell everyone!”

“Tell them I can’t wait to see them.”

“I most certainly will, you just call when you are on your way and someone will be there to pick you up at the airport.”

“Mom, it’s really okay the flight isn’t long at all, I can just take a cab over.”

“Are you crazy? You haven’t been home in over a year, someone will meet you. You know we give proper welcome homes here in Oakland Valley.”

Lucy laughs, knowing not to challenge her mom.

“Ok, mom, I’ll see you soon. I love you.”

“Love you too! See you soon.”

Lucy hangs up the phone. She sighs and dials another number.

“Hello?”

“Hey Cami… did you ever buy that ticket to Oakland?”

“Already done boss, confirmation is in your email if you check it.”

Lucy laughs.

“How’d you know I’d end up going?”

“Because you need to.”

“Thank you Cami, and Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas boss.”

Lucy hangs up the phone and looks back at the photos of her and Dean.

“Please, let this be the right thing,” she whispers to herself.

Lucy drags her feet across the floor and into her bed room, grabbing a suitcase from her closet she begins to pack and head home.

A Broken Heart For Christmas Pt. 2

Read the first part HERE

broken heart for christmas

Later on that morning Lucy sits at her desk at work. Phones ringing around her. People bustling by, busy with their daily duties. But although she sees and hears, she’s transfixed in a blank stare.

A female colleague approaches her door, she knocks.

Lucy doesn’t budge.

Her colleague, slightly confused, waves her hand it front of Lucy’s face.

Again Lucy seems distant, distracted.

“Knock, knock, anyone home?” she says, with a slight laugh.

Lucy jolts back to reality with realization.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry Cami, what can I do for you?”

“Are you okay boss, you look kind of spaced out?”

“Cami how many times do I have to tell you, just call me Lucy. We’re not that formal here,” she laughs.

“Yea, yea whatever, boss,” Cami winks “So what’s with the spaced out look on your face?”

“Oh I’m fine. I guess I just have a lot on my mind. And with the holidays coming up, I’m just a little more stressed than usual.” She forces a smile.

“Oh I completely understand, I’ve been trying to hustle my way through these last few days of work, so that I can have a peaceful few days with my family.”

“Well regardless of what you get done, the magazine can survive. Take whatever time you need, you deserve it.”

“Hmmm, I was just about to say the same thing about you.” Cami smiles.

Lucy laughs.

“Seriously boss, you are the hardest working editor in this world, you need a break. Besides don’t you have a big fancy Christmas waiting for you back in your home town… where is that again?”

“Oakland Valley, Minnesota.” Lucy says with a slight fondness in her voice.

“I bet it’s one of those small magical towns that does Christmas justice, huh?”

“Oh yea, decorations go up December 1st, and festivities last all month. There’s a Christmas carnival and a big parade…” Lucy says with a sparkle in her eye her voice drowning off as she remembers.

“Sounds pretty special,” Cami says nodding along.

“It definitely is, I think that’s the part that I miss the most about living in a small town. You come to the big city and the holidays just become so…”

“Corporate?”

Lucy pauses and looks up at Cami, in awe.

“Yea, yes, that’s exactly the right word.”

“Boss, I’ve lived in New York City all my life, people come here for the glitz and the glamour and it’s nice and all believe me, but sometimes you need more. You need substance. And YOU need to go home and pack, and get the hell out of this office for the next couple of days. Like you said the magazine will survive. The people of New York can live without its daily dose of All Things Girl Gossip.”

Lucy looks at her knowingly and laughs.

“You are right. But let’s just say there are a few thinks back home that, I’m not exactly ready to face just yet.”

“Ooo…gossip?” Cami’s eyes light up as she makes her way further into Lucy’s office, taking a seat.

“No. Just-”

“It’s a guy isn’t it?”

“Why… why would you say that?” Lucy says looking away as she fidgets with papers on her desk to avoid answering.

“Well considering the fact that I’ve worked for you for the past year, I’ve picked up on the minor detail that you don’t really have a social life boss,” Cami says matter of factly.

“What- I do too…” Lucy says feeling insulted.

“Oh really? When was the last time you went out on a date?” Cami asks challenging her.

Lucy ponders for a moment, “Oh… just last Thursday, I went out to dinner with-”

“That was a business dinner, not a date.” Cami folds her arms.

“Ugh, what do you know?” Lucy says resorting to childish antics and pouting.

“Considering the fact that when I asked you if you not returning home- in what is it- over a year now right? Has anything to do with guy, you totally wigged out …yea I’d say it’s all about a guy.”

“Ok, fine, you caught me, it’s about a guy… that I used to know.”

“And by know, you mean dated?” Cami states.

Lucy glares, “-But he doesn’t live there anymore and he hasn’t been back there either.”

“Ok so then what’s the problem?” Cami notes the obvious question.

“It’s the memories that we had there. Oakland is my home yes, but it’s also where I met Dean and where I fell in love with him. And it’s also where he broke my heart.”

“Is this Dean, college boyfriend Dean?” Cami asks leaning into the conversation.

“How do you know about that?” Lucy asks narrowing her eyes.

“It’s an office, people talk.” Cami says trying to make light of it.

“Talk about what?” Lucy says surprised, baffled even.

“About office romances, how hot mailroom Bob is, and… how- to- get- the boss out of her dating rut.”

“Wha-”

“Besides your Facebook is an open book, it’s not like you’ve bothered to delete any photos of him or anything, there’s your evidence.”

“Oh my gosh, I can’t believe this, so everyone just knows.”

“Well I wouldn’t say they know anything, I’d say they speculate things. I mean we don’t know how Dean hurt you, we just know that you were together in college and then you weren’t. And it seems to me like you may still be carrying a torch for him. Maybe that’s worth looking into?”

Lucy glares at her.

“Ok I am not still carrying a torch for him. I hate him. I hate him for what he did to me, for how he hurt me. And I don’t care to relive that, thank you. And I think it’s insensitive for people to talk about things that involve my personal life, behind my back. It’s unprofessional.”

“Ok boss, all due respect but we aren’t professional here. We’re all friends. We all care about each other, we care  about you. This is home. You instilled that in us. “We’re not that formal here” remember?”

Lucy softens.

“We love you and we just want you to be happy.” Cami says reaching out for her friend’s hand.

Lucy takes it and smiles.

“Thank you. And I’m sorry. It’s just-”

“I hit a nerve.”

“Yea, you hit a nerve.” Lucy says.

“Well at the risk of overstepping my boundaries, I am going to say one more thing, and I ask you to please not hate me.”

“Okay…” Lucy says reluctantly.

“Maybe the reason you haven’t dated since Dean, is because there is still a lot of unresolved things between you too, that are preventing you from moving on.”

“I-” Lucy stops pondering.

“Or maybe you just don’t want to move on.” Cami says as Lucy’s eyes widen.

She sits back in her chair, in shock, and possible realization.

“Should I book you on the next flight out, boss?”

Lucy looks at her not knowing what to say.

Stranger Drunk

shots_s660[1]

Pouring Rain trickles down storefront windows.

Cars whizz past kicking up water.

The day has been gloomy and dark, but the night is just beginning.

Macey is rushing down the city block, no direct location, but needing to blow off steam after a long day at work.

Her umbrella long since destroyed and forgotten.

She storms into a nearby bar, the door slamming behind her, her outfit completely soaked.

The bar is pretty empty, except for a man sitting at the bar, and a few stragglers at various tables.

The man at the bar glances over, his eyes scaling her up and down.

Her gaze misses him as she walks and sits a few seats from him, with a mission in mind.

I need a drink…or 2 or 5 she thinks.

The bartender smiles her way

“What can I get you?” he says.

“Let’s start with a shot of tequila…”

The bartender smirks.

“You got it.”

The man sitting next to her glances over, again.

The bartender pours Macey a shot.

“Thank you, bottoms up,” she raises her glass to the bartender and knocks it back.

She winces.

“Keep ’em coming.”

The bartender nods and lines up the next round.

The man next to her turns to her.

“You must have had a bad day,” he says.

“You have no idea.”

“Well if you don’t mind a stranger’s ears, I’d be happy to listen…venting usually helps me.”

“Handsome guy like you…dressed in a business suit, what kind of problems could you possibly have…it’s a man’s world isn’t it,” she huffs obviously annoyed, and dripping with sarcasm.

“Any man who has ever made you think that, is an absolute disgrace.”

“We agree on something.”

“Can I be forward for just a second?”

“That depends,” she says her eyebrow arching.

“On what?”

“On how forward you’re willing to be.”

“As forward as you’ll let me be,” he says his lips smirking, as he leans in closer.

“There may be room for some cinematic liberties.”

“Cinematic liberties?” he laughs.

“Yea you know like in the movies when a guy and girl meet at a bar and-”

“And what?”

“Get to know -each other- a little better.”

“That sounds entertaining.”

“Buy me my next round of shots and maybe that’ll be a possibility?”

“It’d be my pleasure.”

Macey smiles.

As the man gestures to the bartender to pour another round.

“So how does a sexy, obviously power house of a woman, end up alone on a Friday night?

“I’m not alone,” she smirks taking a shot.

The man smirks looking away for a beat. Needing a minute.

“So you wanna get out of here?” she says.

“Are you sure…I mean don’t you want to at least know my name first?”

“No. I’m a one night opportunity and the less I know about you, the more fun it’ll be…” she says her eyes dancing.

“I…”

“Hey if you’re not interested-”

“I never said I wasn’t interested. I just thought that maybe I could take you out to dinner first, or something.”

“Oh wow, drinks and a dinner, what a gentleman. That’s not really what I’m looking for tonight-”

“Your place or mine?”

Macey smiles taking her last shot and walking out of the bar.

The man throws a 100 dollar bill on the bar for the drinks and follows Macey out, his gaze transfixed.

He meets her outside, the rain has finally stopped and Macey is holding a cab.

The man grabs her by the arm, spinning her toward him. He kisses her catching her off guard.

“As much as I’d love to take you home, you deserve to be courted, and I won’t be the guy to deny you that.”

“Where’d you come from?”

He smiles.

“I know that this may not be what you want right now, or tonight. But when you realize it is what you want, give me a call.”

He hands her a business card. Kissing her on the cheek, as he begins to walk away.

Macey looks at his name; dazed.

“Brayden” it reads.

He turns back around.

“Oh and I hope that your night got at least a little better, because you wear a smile like you’re wearing that dress…pretty flawlessly.” he smirks walking away.

Macey stands there in awe.

“Well stranger you just made my night.” She whispers to herself as she smiles tucking the business card in her jacket pocket and getting in the cab.

Neil: “Oh you know me so well,” he says dramatically with a sexy smirk and a slight laugh. “Do I have any messages?”

Molly: “Personal, yes…Business related, no.”

Neil smiles as she hands him his messages.

Molly: “Can I make an observation?”

Neil: “Of course, maybe even over dinner sometime,” he says looking up at her from his desk with a smirk.

Molly: “I don’t think so.”

Neil: “Why not?”

Molly: “Because the observation I was talking about, doesn’t exactly paint you in the best light.”

Neil: “Well lucky for me, I really don’t care what you think, and if you have a problem with my professional skills, I would be happy to fire you.”

Molly: “Oh do you mean lack there of, and don’t worry firing me won’t be necessary, because I quit.”

Neil: “Molly, wait, come on. I was joking you don’t have to get so serious all the time, you know I’d be lost here without you,” he says with a sarcastic smirk.

Molly: “Oh, I’m touched,” she says sarcastically clutching her chest, “You really don’t get it do you?”

Neil: “Get what?” he says with a sly smirk, flirting with her.

Molly: “You walk around this office like the world is yours, you treat women like their disposable to you, but trust me, I can have a sexual harassment suit drawn up so fast, that you wouldn’t be able to charm your way out of even with the best lawyer money has to buy,” she says leaning over his desk.

Neil: “Why, Ms. Molly is that a threat?” he says getting closer to her, as the desk acts as their only barrier.

Molly: “No, it’s a warning,” she says throwing his mail at him, and leaving his office with a strut.

CUT TO:

Scene 7: [INT. Advertisement Office]

Later that night Neil was getting his things ready to leave to meet yet another girl, when he stops to look at the picture of him and Haley on his desk, he then opens his desk draw and takes out a ring box and opens it as he is hit with yet another memory.

*Insert Flashback, of Haley crying as she throws a key at him, and storms out with her bags packed.*

Molly: “Heading out for another fun night with yet another poor naïve girl, Mr. Drake?” she says coming into his office from her cubicle just outside, as Neil hurriedly puts the picture down, and throws the ring back in his desk draw.

Neil: “Don’t you ever knock! — Look we need to get something straight, don’t make the mistake in thinking you can hold your little threat over my head, we both know your credibility is shot, no one is going to back you up, they all love me, I’m a great boss,” He says smirking and leaning back in his chair with his hands out.

Molly: (she sits on the edge of his desk) “Really, what about Karen from marketing, you know the one you stood up every time you asked her out, and Rebecca from printing, the one you only hired because she was pretty and oh gosh and then there’s always Haley (she says picking up the picture of him and Haley) the love of your life who you… cheated on, right?… Yea something tells me neither of those women are very fond of you.”

Neil: (Hearing her name he feels sucker punched) “Who told you about Haley?” he says looking up at her with shock and grabbing the picture from her hands.

Molly: “I have my sources, Shall I go on?” she says standing up, hands on her hips; challenging him.

Neil: “What is it that you want from me, exactly?” he says standing up and leaning on his desk.

Molly: “I want you to stop what you’ve been doing?”

Neil: “What is it to you what I do, and who I do it with? Oh wait, I get it, someone’s a little jealous,” he says touching her chin flirtatiously.

Molly: (She slaps his hand away angrily) “No Jackass, I couldn’t care less about you, but I happen to care about how you treat people, especially people who are a part of my life; (Neil looks on confused) Wow! You really don’t remember do you?” she says laughing and folding her arms.

Neil: “Remember what?” he says curiously with a sexy grin.

Molly: “Haley’s my sister.”

Neil: “What?” he says, his face falling.

Molly: “Well, half- sister but who’s counting right?” she says with a dismissing wave of hand.

Neil: “No, NO, I would have known if Haley had a sister, we were together for 5 years.”

Molly: Really? Or were you just too self- absorbed to even realize I wasn’t around because I was away at boarding school for a special design program. But then again she probably told you that, you just neglected to remember, because you were always too busy thinking about yourself. I’ll try to hide the hurt, (she says touching her heart dramatically). It’s a shame, you had it all, and you threw it away in one night, you’d think you would learn a little something from it, but I guess not,” She says about to leave his office.

Neil: “How is she?”

Molly smiles to herself as she turns back towards him.

Molly: “She’s great! She’s doing great for herself; and somehow she gets more and more beautiful everyday. But that’s none of your business anymore now is it?”

Neil: “Is she seeing anyone?”

Molly: (she laughs sarcastically) “You really don’t get it. You know I feel sorry for you, because one of these days you’re going to wake up in the middle of a life you despise, because the way you treat women is despicable. You’re a womanizing- insensitive- manipulative, excuse for a man- and my sister is lucky to be rid of you,” she says getting in his face.

Neil: “Maybe you’re right.”

Molly: “Oh I know I am,” she says in a whispery tone, folding her arms in satisfaction.

As Neil rushes past her and into the hall to unleash his pain, he closes his eyes as Haley flashes in his mind. *Insert Flashback sequence of Neil and Haley…*

Neil: “What’s wrong?” He says afraid to ask.

Haley: “Why don’t you take a wild guess?” She says looking at him angrily.

Neil: “Haley… I can explain,” he says nervously.

Haley: “Explain? (She laughs) There’s nothing to explain, your little friend called, she wants a repeat of the other night.”

Neil: (with tears in his eyes.) “I’m so sorry, it was a stupid drunken mistake, and it didn’t mean anything,” (he says walking toward her.)

Haley: (she stands up) “Don’t touch me; (she says defensively) what did you think that I wouldn’t find out? That you would go on acting as if it never happened; as if you never cheated. This whole time, I’ve been walking around without a clue as to who you truly are, how could you do this?”

Neil: “I wanted to tell you, I did, but I-”

Haley: “But what? There’s a difference between wanting to tell me, and actually doing it Neil. I can’t believe this is happening,” (she says turning away from him, crying, as she folds her arms across her chest trying to comfort herself.)

Neil: “Haley I was scared, I was so scared that if I told you that I messed up, you would leave me. I wouldn’t be able to handle that,” (he says reaching for her.)

Haley: (turns quickly around) Messed up? This isn’t forgetting to buy milk, or forgetting to make dinner reservations Neil, it’s forgetting that you made a commitment to me. And if you can forget that then I can’t be with you,” She says grabbing her bags and going to leave.

Neil goes to grab her, but she pushes him away and leaves, as Neil sinks to the floor, with is head in his hands.

(Flashbacks end)

Kelly: “Hi,” she says in a tone of voice that let’s Neil know, she hasn’t forgotten.

Neil: “Thanks for agreeing to meet me.”

Kelly: “Well, imagine my surprise when you actually called, begging for a second chance.”

Neil: “I wasn’t exactly begging.”

Kelly: “Really- well then,” she says turning to leave with a playful smile on her face.

Neil: “Ok! You’re right, I did- kind of beg, a little.”

Kelly: “I thought so,” she says smiling.

Neil: “So- will you stay?” he says gesturing to their table.

Kelly: “I guess so,” she says sighing and giving him a skeptical glare, as he pulls her chair out for her.

Neil: “I’m really sorry about-”

Kelly: “You’re hit and run,” she says smirking and cracking her knuckles.

Neil: “Yea, (he says embarrassed) I acted like a complete-”

Kelly: “Dick.”

Neil: “Yea. I really am sorry. I should have never treated you the way I did.”

Kelly makes an expression agreeing with him.

Neil: “But I’m really glad you came.”

Kelly: “Are you?”

Neil: “Yea,” he says looking at her seriously, “Do you think that we can maybe, start over?”

Kelly: “Well,” she says sighing, “that depends.”

Neil: “On what?” he says with a nervous laugh.

Kelly: “On whether or not you’re paying,” she says taking a menu from the waitress as he looks at her with a smile.

CUT TO:

Scene 9: [EXT. Kelly’s Door Step.]

Kelly: “Well, I have to say I’m surprised.”

Neil: “Why?”

Kelly: “That you lasted the whole night, without slipping up.”

Neil: “Thanks for the vote of confidence,” he says with a small laugh.

Kelly: “I don’t need to have confidence in you; you need to have confidence in yourself. You know by first glance you’re a really cocky guy, but it must really suck to lose the love of your life… I’m guessing that’s why you’ve become such a ladies man.”

Neil: “What are you- talking- about?” He says confused.

Kelly: “Neil, I’m studying to become a lawyer ok, cracking the case is a part of my life, (She says with a laugh.) The modeling I do for ads like yours, are just to pay my way through law school. I’m not just some stereotypical blonde bimbo, I do have eyes and a brain. But you’d know that if you looked past my body and actually got to know me. A guy, who still keeps pictures of his ex- in his house, means that most likely he screwed up and can’t get over it. Am I close?” She says squinting at him.

Neil: (laughing with a small sigh) “You’re very perceptive,” he says looking down.

Kelly: “Neil- I won’t be your rebound. I deserve to be with a guy who wants me for me; I won’t be a second rate version of your ex when I know I can have a man that wants a first rate me.”

Neil: “Kelly I-”

Kelly: “Goodnight Neil,” she says kissing him on the cheek and walking up the stairs to her house.

*Insert Haley Flashback; Haley laughing and kissing him on the cheek goodbye when they first met at a frat party.*

As Neil turns to walk down from Kelly’s doorstep, looking at his phone he scrolls through some old pictures of him and Haley, then upon looking up he sees Haley, and she’s laughing and on the arm of another guy, as they kiss he spots a big diamond ring on her finger, and he stands there in the shadows shocked, hurt and alone.

Molly: (V.O. – off screen) “And sometimes, evil doers get exactly what they deserve… For the first night in a long time Neil Drake went home alone.”

CUT TO:

Scene 10:

Neil walking home alone down a dimly lit block.

CUT TO:

Scene 11: End Scene [INT. Neil’s Apartment; at night]

Voicemail recording: “Hey Neil, its Molly. I hope our little run-in last week didn’t cause you too much heartache. Anyway you’ve got an obligation to your clients and your workers Neil. So…get your ass back to work, and I’ll try and go a little easier on you.”

Neil sits at home depressed and lonely. He hasn’t shaved in a few days and is still in pajamas. He’s drinking away his pain with alcohol. As bottles upon bottles of liquor cover his table, he continues to drink.

*Insert quick flashback- Neil passes by Molly’s cubicle and notices a picture of Haley, and her fiancé Drew on her desk; and next to it is a wedding invitation. Picking it up, it’s as if reality had slapped him in the face, as his eyes become watery.*

Remembering that moment; Neil takes yet another drink.

A knock comes at the door; Neil gets up aggravated and opens it.

Haley: “Hi,” she says looking down at her fidgeting hands.

Neil: (notices her ring is gone) “What are you doing here?” he says looking her over as his heart beats faster; he’s shocked to see her at his door.

Haley: “I don’t know,” she says laughing slightly. “I was engaged, I was engaged to a wonderful man, who has been only good to me, and-”

Neil: “Was engaged?” he says with hopeful eyes.

Haley: “Yes, and now I’m standing here at your door, and I don’t really know why,” she says shrugging as her eyes become watery.

Neil: “I think you do,” he says putting his hands in his pockets as his eyes stare right through her.

Haley: “I guess for some strange reason I just needed to see you, Molly told me you’ve been asking about me.”

Neil: “You know- I never did let you go, I still do love you, and I’m so sorry.”

Haley: “I don’t know if I can believe you,” she says looking up at him through glossy eyes.

Neil: “You can, I swear. Haley you can,” he says grabbing her into a tight embrace.

Suddenly Haley vanishes from his arms, and Neil jolts up from a long sleep; seeing a peacefully sleeping Haley lying next to him, he feels relieved and pulls her toward him as she snuggles against him; her body fades away. Neil wakes up at his table with bottles around him and a picture of him and Haley shattered on the floor, as the sound of the answering machine continues to beep.

-The End-

*******************************

This is a script I wrote back in college. It was one of the first full ones I wrote. It’s really rough around the edges format wise and even content wise. But I think there is a good story there. I just thought it’d be fun to share.

I attempted to shoot this a few years back. But we never got through the full script, due to scheduling issues. I was so ready, with my organized binder of ideas. I even made my “actors” (and by actors I mean my family and friends) take cast pictures. My photographer brother was even in the process of working on a movie poster for me, I should see if I can dig that up, that would be kind of cool to show you guys. I also had my Neil and Haley characters pose for couple’s photos that served as prop/set photos. (I’ll include a few below) Needless to say the filming didn’t pan out and I was pretty heartbroken. But I did get to shoot a really raw, uncut version of the “Naley” Montage. It’s terrible quality and I didn’t even know to use mics. But I am really glad I have that gem. It makes me feel nostalgic. Mind you this was before I knew the beauty of different angles and editing. #freshman. Hey we all have to start somewhere right? I haven’t gotten consent from my actors to release the footage so a few pics will just have to do.

What do you think of the story? Were you surprised by the ending? Or were you secretly hoping Haley would eventually find her way back to Neil? Tell me all the things! P.S. Molly’s MY favorite character, because you never see her coming!

“Trapped”

trapped

Michaela walks into the elevator, she presses the button for her floor.

The doors slowly close.

She begins to hear one of her favorite songs playing over the speaker.

She smiles and closes her eyes for a second, listening.

Give me love like never before,
‘Cause lately I’ve been craving more,
And it’s been a while but I still feel the same,
Maybe I should let you go.

Ding.

The elevator stops on the next floor, she hears the doors open.

Opening her eyes she is faced with a young good looking man.

He smiles at her. She smiles back.

He gets in, pressing the button for his floor, and then steps beside her.

Michaela is suddenly nervous.

The man glances over at her.

Michaela ignores the awkward tension that has apparently filled the elevator the moment he stepped in.

Although she could swear she’d never seen this man before, there was something she couldn’t put her finger on.

At this point the man turns to her yet again.

She’s had it and turns toward him.

Staring at him blankly.

Caleb: I’m sorry. Forgive me. I’m staring.

Michaela: That’s kind of obvious, but it’s not obvious why?

Caleb: I just, I feel like I know you…from somewhere.

Michaela: I guess I just have one of those faces.

Caleb: No…it’s more than that. I can feel something. Like a memory.

Michaela: (rolls her eyes) Look I’m gonna be completely honest with you here, I’m not in the mood to be hit on by yet another guy who isn’t ready for a real relationship. Been there done that, and I am so over boys disguising themselves as men. Wearing a suit doesn’t make you one.

Caleb: (laughs) That’s not what I’m trying to do. But it’s good to know.

Michaela: (softening) I’m sorry. (she laughs) It’s been one of those morning. You know when everything in the world decides to go wrong. I guess I’m just stressed.

Caleb: Hey no harm no fowl. (he holds his hands up in mock surrender)

Michaela smiles and takes a sip of her coffee unsure of what to say next.

She anxiously looks at the floor levels as they pass by;

17, 18, 19…

Is no one else needing to take the elevator this morning? She thinks.

20, 21, 22

Just as her floor is about to approach, the elevator drops, the lights dim, and there are noises that Michaela knows can only symbolize bad news.

The elevator halts.

Michaela’s stomach flips.

This has always been a fear of hers.

She wasn’t good in small spaces.

Michaela and The man exchange looks

Michaela: No?

Caleb: Looks like we’re gonna be here for a while.

Michaela: No. We can’t. Are we stuck? We can’t be stuck.

Michaela looks around frantically. She begins to press buttons like crazy.

Caleb: Hey hey, I don’t think you should do that. It may make things worse.

Michaela: What could be worse? I have so much to do today. And I am going to be late to my presentation. Oh my god I can’t breathe.

Caleb: Ok. Look at me, Ok?

He grabs her hands and looks her in the eyes.

Caleb: Take a deep breathe in,

Michaela follows his coaching

Caleb: And now breathe out.

Michaela breathes out.

Caleb: Ok let’s try it slower.

Michaela slows down her breathing but she’s still in a bit of a nervous panic.

Caleb: Just look at me. Focus on me. Breathe. You’re okay. I got you. This is just a momentary feeling, you’re having a bit of a panic attack, it’ll pass.

Michaela: And what if it doesn’t, what if we never get out of here?

Caleb: We will. I’m going to press the emergency button now ok. Someone is gonna come help us.

Michaela: Ok.

Caleb: Can I leave you for just a minute?

Michaela nods reluctantly, her grip on his hands tightening.

Caleb: Ok, I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. (smiles) Come on, come over here.

The man brings Michaela over to the panel.

He presses the emergency button with one hand as he holds onto her hand with his other.

“Emergency services how may I help you?”

Caleb: Um hi, hello. We are currently in the elevator and it seems to have stalled or stopped in between floors.

“How many passengers are in there with you?”

Caleb: Just one. Me and a young woman.

“Are you both ok?”

Michaela looks at him with worry in her eyes.

Caleb: Um yes, but we need to get out of here. Soon.

Michaela: Please, please send someone to help, I can’t be in here much longer.

“Ma’am do you have any medical issues?”

Michaela: No I just hate small spaces. I’m a bit claustrophobic, and you need to get me out of here before the walls close in.

“I understand ma’am, just try to stay calm. Take deep breathes, if you have some water take small sips or chew some gum. I will get a repair man over there for you now.”

Michaela: Thank you.

“I will keep you posted on his progress.”

Caleb: Thank you ma’am.

Michaela closes her eyes and leans her head back against the wall. She sighs anxiously.

Caleb: Hey, you’re gonna be okay. We’re gonna be out of here soon.

Michaela: I hope you’re right.

Caleb: Here, (he takes off his suit jacket and lays it on the floor.) Why don’t you sit?

Michaela sits.

The man kneels in front of her, reaching into his work bag he hands her a water bottle.

Caleb: Here, take small sips. It’ll help.

Michaela: (takes the bottle from him)

“Ma’am, sir? I have a repair man about 20 minutes away. You will be out shortly.”

The man smiles

Caleb: Ah look at that, good news.

He sits next to her.

Michaela: Thank god.

Michaela sips the water and starts to calm down a bit.

Caleb: How ya feeling?

Michaela: A little better.

Caleb: Good. (smiles)

Michaela: Thank you.

Caleb: Sure.

Michaela: I’m sorry, I just have this thing, with small spaces…

Caleb: Hey, I get it. Don’t even give it a second thought.

Michaela: You’re kind of a sweetheart.

Caleb: (smiles) Well at least that’s a step up from…what was it? A boy disguising himself as a man.

Michaela: (laughs) Yea. Again, sorry about that. (she winces, embarrassed) You are all man.

His eyebrows raise.

Michaela: Oh gosh…why did that sound sexual? I just meant that you know you seem like a gentleman.

Caleb: (laughs) I know what you meant.

Michaela: Ok. (she laughs nervously, her cheeks turning red.)

Michaela looks away.

Suddenly feeling strangely aware of the fact that this guy is gorgeous.

Caleb: Can I ask you a question?

Michaela turns back toward the man.

Michaela: Sure. It’s not like we’re going anyway.

They both share a laugh.

Caleb: Do you believe in soulmates?

Michaela: Hell yes.

Caleb: Can I ask, why?

Michaela: Because I believe that there’s someone out there that you’re just meant to be with. Your heart is meant to find their heart. And life will somehow align your lives. And you’ll meet and the rest is history.

Caleb: Or is the rest up to you? Or us? I don’t think that people realize that you have to do some of the work. Fate and destiny only go so far. Sometimes you need to take the leap.

Michaela: So you think, people need to make love happen? That’s not exactly the most romantic thing.

Caleb: No not necessarily. But I do think that we often let love slip away. Love isn’t always going to hit you like a lightning bolt. It may not even look like love at first glance. Love is in the quiet moments. In the small things you share with someone. Whether it’s someone you’ve known for years and start to see in a new light, or a stranger you get stuck in an elevator with.

Michaela: See but some may call that fate… or destiny. (she smiles)

Caleb: True, but like I said the rest is up to us. So what do you wanna do?

The elevator lights go off.

Michaela’s voice is heard in a soft whisper.

Michaela: Take the leap.

The elevator lights come back on.

Michaela and The man are holding hands.

They smile at each other.

As the elevator jolts and finally makes it to the next floor, the doors open.

The two of them gather their things and stand up.

Michaela begins to walk out, but the man pulls her back in, catching her off guard, he kisses her.

Michaela pulls away taken back, but a smile spreads across her face.

Michaela: What’s your name?

The man smiles.

Caleb: You really don’t remember, do you?

Michaela looks at him confused.

Caleb: Let’s just say the last time, fate decided to let you walk away from me. This time, I wasn’t leaving anything up to chance.

Michaela: Oh my god. Caleb? You-

Caleb: I’ve changed a lot over the years; lost weight, got contacts, and got a lifetime subscription to proactive. (he laughs)

Michaela: You look great.

Caleb: So do you. Your eyes still sparkle from a mile away.

Michaela: (blushes, and looks down at her feet) Will you call me?

Caleb: You can count on it.

Michaela hands him her card, and kisses him on the cheek.

Caleb: I’ll be seeing you.

Michaela: Yes you will.

Her name is Lulu

Lulu walks along the city street. Her iPod in her ears; playing one of her favorite songs…lulu

Woman monster, woman child,
Woman hero, woman wild
Woman whisper, woman scream
Woman listen, woman free

Woman Mary, Jezebel
Woman heaven, woman hell
Woman teacher, womankind
Woman nature, woman rise

I am the Universe wrapped in skin

A few minutes in and she came to the realization that she didn’t really have a destination. She just needed to walk. She needed to breathe fresh air into her lungs. To feel connected to the world in some sort of strange way. She needed to find clarity. Purpose. Inspiration. Lulu didn’t quite know how to feel about her recent move to New York. She was unsure she’d ever fit in. But maybe that was the point. Always feeling like she was two steps behind everyone else…late to the game, is a phrase she knew well.

She needed to feel like she was finding a path for herself, or creating one. She needed to feel like she wasn’t a child, that she was growing and maturing. That she was going somewhere, that she was making her future happen, and not just waiting on it. Lulu needed to know that she could stand on her own, take care of herself. To begin her quest from girl to woman.

But she also needed to learn the difference between becoming independent, and pushing people away. Isolation is no way to live. There had to be a balance. Lulu needed to find it.

Isn’t that how it goes?  Lulu ponders. Small town girl makes a splash in the big city? A fish out of water. It’s a scary thing uprooting your whole life, for a chance at something that may or may not ever happen. Lulu wanted to be a writer. To expand the minds of many. To expand their souls, and give them an escape from ordinary life even just for a minute.

Lulu’s goal was to make people feel like they aren’t alone. Like they have a friend in her. Someone who gets it. Who gets them. She wanted to make them feel like she saw them, she wanted to make them feel seen and understood. Lulu wasn’t used to scandalous behavior. Sure she wrote about it in her stories of young adults trying to find themselves, making mistakes along the way. But it was all based on imagination, it was nothing she herself had ever experienced. Write what you know, huh? Lulu did the opposite. She wrote what she wanted to know, what she wanted to explore and learn about. She wrote from imagination. The pinnacle key of creativity. Some would even go as far as to call her innocent, or a prude, or simply too naïve for her own good. But Lulu knew better. Her eyes were open. And she could see the world for all that it is. A mixture of happiness and sadness. A blur of blacks and whites. Fading. Gray areas. Colors like canary yellow and magenta. Lulu could see that life can be filled with depression and anxiety and then flip a switch and be blessed with joy and laughter. It was in these switches, that she would put pen to paper and try to make sense of it all. The pen is mightier.

So fellow writers. Who is Lulu? A small town girl moving to the big city? A fish out of water? A writer with a dream? A lost soul searching for her purpose? Is Lulu just like you? Just like me? Lulu is you. Lulu is me. Lulu is every twenty something struggling writer, every girl turning into a woman, Lulu is just trying to find who she is, and what her place in the world is, but there’s a few things to keep in mind along the way…

Ricky: Got it. We got him.

He reaches for his phone.

Ian is in his car with Maggie and Lily sitting in the back.

Ian: Hello?normal_Revenge416-2454[1]

Ricky: I got something, I need you to come by the hotel.

Ian: Ok Dave, I will consider that.

Ricky: (realizing) Shit Lily is with you both. Ok just drop them off and get here. Make sure your security guy can keep an eye out and double check the mic.

tumblr_mwq04o7S6O1qax2xho1_250[1]Ian: Ok Dave you got it.

Ian hangs up.

Maggie: Is everything ok?

Maggie and Ian exchange glances through the inner rearview mirror.

Ian: Everything is fine. Dave is just an old friend, needs my help with something. Shouldn’t take too long.

Lily: I thought you were hired to be Maggie’s personal bodyguard?

Maggie: Lily?

Lily: What? No. If he leaves, then what the hell…all this talk about keeping you safe…how it’s his job…laggie 3

Maggie: He is keeping me safe.

Lily: Something doesn’t seem right here. What’s going on? Why are you so calm?

Maggie: Just trust me everything is fine.

Lily: How do you know?

Maggie: Ok I don’t. But I’m choosing to have faith. That’s all I can do at this point.

Ian: Look Lily, I understand your concerns. But my friend Dave is working on a plan, he’s part of this whole keeping Maggie safe thing. And I need to meet with him. In the meantime, your building has security and I will be in touch.

Lily: Well why didn’t you just say so. (she rolls her eyes, and crosses her arms)

Ian: Because you’re infuriating and wouldn’t let anyone else get a word in.

Maggie notices.

Maggie: (teasing a smile) Well… this outta be fun.

Lily looks away, blushing.

Ian pulls up in front of Maggie’s building, and gets out of the car.

Ian: Ladies. (he says opening the car door.)

Maggie gets out first.

Maggie: Thank you.

Lily follows locking eyes with Ian before looking away.

Ian laughs and follows them toward the building.

The three of them step into the elevator.

Maggie presses the button for her floor.

Within a few moments they reach her floor and exit the elevator, Maggie turns to Ian.

Maggie: Thank you for walking us up here, you should go help your friend Dave, sounds like he can use it. We’ll be fine. Won’t we, Lil?maggie meets ian

Ian looks at Lily, who stands there with her arms crossed. Avoiding Ian’s eyes.

Lily: Yup.

Ian: I don’t doubt it. But there are a few things I need to check on before I go. I have to scan your apartment, just to be safe.

Maggie: Oh of course, (opening her door she lets him in.)

Before following, Maggie leans over to Lily.

Lily: (whispering) Shut up.

Maggie: Well…I don’t think I’ve ever seen the day.

Lily: Shut up.

Maggie: You’re in troubleee.

Lily: Oh yea ya think? Shut up and go, (she laughs shooing her into the apartment.)

Ian is walking around checking each room.

He leans down to turn on her lamp and subtly checks in on the mic he planted.

REVENGE -

Maggie nods at him.

Ian: All looks good. You guys will be fine. Call me if you need anything. I won’t be gone long.

Maggie: Ok thank you.

Ian walks toward the door. He stops in front of Lily, who’s blocking the doorway.

Maggie walks out of her building as Ian follows behind, driving along.

Maggie and Lily walk into a cute little restaurant and are seated.

Lily: So you seem to be in better spirits!

Maggie: Um yea. (she smiles, then catches herself) And no.

Lily looks puzzled.lunch millie

Maggie: It’s a mixed emotions kind of thing. I’m still trying to digest the fact that I have so much to still live for even though he’s gone. It’s definitely going to take some time. But I know one day I’ll see him again.

Lily: I agree. Maybe you just need something to take your mind off of things. A distraction.

Maggie: My thoughts exactly, which is why I’m thinking I’m gonna come back to work.

Lily: (smiles brightly) Really? (Maggie nods) Oh my god! The kids are going to be so excited. They missed you.

Maggie: Yea I’m excited too. I’ve missed their little faces. They always make me smile.

Lily: This is just, this is great. I’m so happy….as long as you’re ready. I mean this is what you want right? I didn’t push you or anything…right? I mean because I know I can sometimes be bossy and meddle a little too much-

Maggie: Sometimes? (she laughs) No. You didn’t push me at all. This is the right move for me. I’m sure of it.

Lily: Well in that case, you and I are celebrating this new improvement, this positive attitude. Tonight. You and me drinks? Dancing? What do you say?

Maggie: Um I don’t know…

Lily: Too much? Too soon?

Maggie: You know what? No, it’ll be fun.

Lily: Yea?

Maggie: Yea. Let’s do it.

Lily: Atta girl. (she raises her glass as they clink them in cheers.)

ian watchMeanwhile, Ian watches from afar.

A few minutes later, Ricky walks into his hotel room. He opens up his lap top and starts to work. His phone rings, interrupting his intense focus.

Ricky: Ian?

Ian: So I am sitting at the bar of some night club, because of what I can only assume was Lily’s idea… to go dancing and drinking tonight.

Ricky: Oh really?

Ian: Oh yea.chicago-pd-stepping-stone[1]

Ricky laughs.

Ian watches from afar, as the girls dance away. Drinks in their hands. And carefree spirits. Even though Maggie was still nervous about being away from Ricky, just knowing he is alive was enough to allow an instant calm to flood her mind. And she had great faith in their love and in knowing he’d come back to her.

Ricky: How many guys has Maggie had come up to her?

girls dancingIan laughs.

Ricky: At least 3, am I right?

Ian: 4…

Ricky: Ah. (he laughs)

Ian: She shuts them down pretty quick though. It’s kind of hysterical.

Ricky: That’s my girl. (he laughs) Maggie has been through a lot, she deserves to have a little fun.

Ian: All due respect but this is making my job really difficult. (he glances over to Maggie as his eyes wander to Lily who is dancing up a storm.) caroline-dances-in-well-always-have-bourbon-street[1]

Ricky: Ah, you can handle it. When it comes to Lily and Maggie, I wouldn’t expect anything different.

Ian: Oh thanks. Little warning would have been nice.

Ricky: Um…Pretty sure I did warn you.

Ian: Not enough. (notices the girls walking toward the back restrooms) They’re on the move….I’ll talk to you later.

Ricky: Keep me posted.

Ian: Will do. (he hangs up and follows them.)

Maggie: Oh my god, I have to pee so bad.

Lily: Me too, but I am not breaking the seal.

Maggie: Well if I don’t, I will pee myself. So I’m going.

Lily: Suit yourself.

Maggie: You coming in?

Lily: No, I’ll just wait out here for you.

Maggie: Ok.

Maggie walks into the restroom.

Lily stands outside the door leaning against a wall.Stefan-Caroline-stefan-and-caroline-19090647-500-282[1]

Ian turns the corner and comes face to face with his biggest distraction.

Lily: I knew you were here.

Ian: (rolls his eyes and huffs) Where else would I be?

Lily: I thought we decided you would be less obvious about stalking us.

Ian: I’m not stalking you. I’m just doing my job.

tumblr_inline_n3nw1ejxab1riocm8[1]Lily: You get flustered very easily.

Ian: I do not.

Lily: Of course you do. Look at you all riled up. Your muscles are all tensed. (she strokes his arms) Chill out. Relax. It’s a club. Have a drink. It’s supposed to be fun.

3160702232_1_6_BohJbeCx[1]Ian: I don’t drink on the job.

Lily: Ok fine I hear ya. Mr. Responsible.

Ian: Your friend’s safety is in my hands. How many times do I have to explain that to you?

Lily: Considering I just met you yesterday…let’s try it one more time.

Ian: I-

Lily: (puts a hand up, stopping him) I’m just messing with you. (she laughs) Look I know what you’re here for. And you obviously can’t seem to keep your distance (she looks up at him flirtatiously) so why don’t you just introduce yourself to Maggie. It’ll be much easier for you to blend in if you’re actually hanging out with us.

Ian: That’s not in my job description.

Lily: Ok fine. (holding up her hands) I will stop bugging you if you just hear me out…(Ian looks at her…waiting) I’m just saying I think it’ll be a lot easier for you to keep an eye on her. Keep your friends close…

Ian: And your enemies closer.

Lily: Oh so now I’m the enemy? (she laughs)51b0f853002d10fc50c4dd4d[1]

Ian: Well when you go around saying insinuating things and looking like that all the time, you’re basically a walking distraction. The sexiest distraction I’ve ever met. Makes it really difficult to do my job. So yea I’d say you could argue that puts you in the enemy category.

Lily: Well well, aren’t you smooth.

Ian: I wasn’t trying to be.

Lily: That’s what makes it sexy. (she raises her eyebrows)

Maggie comes out of one of the bathroom stalls. She walks to the sink to wash her hands.

Her phone starts to ring so she dries her hands quickly and takes it out of her purse. She doesn’t recognize the number, but smiles, answering it.

maggie phoneMaggie: Hello?

Ricky: So on a scale of 1 to your 21st birthday, how drunk are you?

Maggie: (laughs and smiles brightly) Mmm I’d say just about in the middle. You caught me at the perfect time though, I had to run to the bathroom, so I’m in here alone.

Ricky: What do you mean you’re alone?

Maggie: Don’t worry, Lily’s waiting for me outside. And I’m sure Ian is just inches away.

Ricky: (laughs) So I hear you’ve had quite a few gentleman callers.

Maggie: Oh did you.

Ricky: Mmm hmmm.

Maggie: (laughs) You know I am really not into this whole you being able to spy on my every move, when I can’t see you at all. It’s creepy.

tumblr_mwq04o7S6O1qax2xho1_250[1]Ricky: Creepy creepy, or like kinda sexy creepy?

Maggie: Is there such a thing as sexy creepy?

Ricky: Well let’s see. (clears his throat) Excuse me, but I’ve been watching you since you walked in, I can’t seem to take my eyes off you. And pardon me for being forward but I noticed you weren’t wearing a ring… Can I buy you a drink?

Maggie: Ok yea I stand corrected, there is such a thing as sexy creepy.

Ricky laughs.

Maggie: I miss you.

Ricky: I miss you too babe.

Maggie: I wish you were here with me.

Ricky: That makes two of us.

Maggie: What are you doing?

Ricky: Come on baby, you know I can’t tell you that.

Maggie: Oh right. Sorry.

Ricky: Don’t be. phone call

Maggie: Are you ok though? You’re someplace safe right?

Ricky: I’m ok, as ok I can be without you in my arms.

Maggie sighs.

Ricky: But yes I’m someplace safe.

Maggie: Well I’m glad.

Ricky: I’ll see you soon.

Maggie: Promise?

Ricky: I promise. I love you.

Maggie: I love you too.

Ricky: Bye gorgeous.

Maggie: Bye…oh babe…

Ricky: Yea?

Maggie: I’m pretty sure Ian and Lily are flirt fighting outside the bathroom door right now. (she laughs)

Ricky: Really? (he laughs)

Maggie puts her head to the door

Maggie: Yea. (she laughs) I think she just wants him to give up following us and just hang out with us. She thinks he needs to tell me who he is.

Ricky: I mean it does kind of make sense, and it would make his job easier.

Maggie: Should I just get the ball rolling?

Ricky: Yea that sounds like a good plan. Be safe.

Maggie: You too.

Ricky: Bye gorgeous.

Maggie: Bye.

lily and ian 4Maggie opens the bathroom door, exposing Lily and Ian in heated conversation.

Maggie: Hi

Ian’s eyes go wide.

Lily looks at him nervously.

Lily: Um Maggie, this is Bill he was just leaving, not interested buddy move along.

Ian goes to walk away.

Maggie: Ian, stop.

Lily and Ian exchange glances.

Maggie: I overheard you. Your voice travels, Lil, I’ve always told you that.

Lily: Damn it Lily. Whisper. (she slaps herself on the forehead)tumblr_inline_mpob7nJFhL1qz4rgp[1]

Ian: Maggie, I’m so sorry for everything- I

Maggie: Don’t be. I know none of this is on you. It’s nice to finally meet you Ian.

She extends her hand, he smiles and shakes it.

Maggie: Thank you for looking out for us. Shall we get some drinks?

Lily: Ian doesn’t drink on the job. (she glances at him, he smirks)

Maggie: Well if he wants to blend in, he can at least get a soda? Right?

Ian: Yea, I guess that works.

maggie meets ianMaggie: Good, now that we’re all acquainted…

She walks off toward the bar.

Lily walks after her.

Ian watches, Lily turns and notices. They both exchange smirks.

Lily: Come on wandering eye, if you’re lucky I’ll let you buy me a drink.

Ian: For the record, by eyes only wander over you.

Lily: Well you sure know how to make a girl blush. Don’t you?

Ian smiles.

Maggie watches from afar.

Ian’s eyes drift to her.

Lily notices.

Lily: Wow. I really am a distraction. (she laughs) I’m sorry I’m making your job so difficult. I know you’re just trying to protect my friend and I should let you.

3160702232_1_6_BohJbeCx[1]Ian: Ah so you’ve decided I’m trustworthy?

Lily: Well I mean I plan to keep a close eye on you. But I’d say I’m a pretty damn good judge of character. When I met Ricky, I knew there were some grey areas to him, but I could tell he was a good guy. I’m getting that same feeling here.

Ian: (smiles) Glad to hear it.

Lily: Well you should consider yourself a pro… two days in, and you’ve already learned my worst character flaw, I can be kind of infuriating.

Ian: (leans in and whispers) I don’t mind.

tumblr_inline_mgjbl9VPZc1rdzz0q[1]Lily looks at him, butterflies forming in her stomach.

Ian: Besides, flaws are what make people different, your flaw makes you beautiful.

Ian smiles, Lily looks up at him.

Maggie: (calls from the bar) Um am I drinking alone here, or what?

Ian: Coming. (He walks off toward Maggie.)

Lily turns around to watch him.

Lily: (to herself) Damn (she fans herself)tumblr_inline_nagc0o59T61so1xk1[1]

Back at the hotel Ricky is on his computer he’s been working for hours.

He types away ferociously, his eyes scanning the screen left and right.

High tech equipment is connecting to the laptop, running and scanning through files.

He squints and his eyes widen

Ricky: Got it. We got him.

He reaches for his phone.

To be continued…
