My TV Nerd Dream Came True

So there are two things in life that I truly fan girl over. I fan girl over a lot of stuff but I’m talking full on next level fan girl shit. And that is for Justin Timberlake/*NSYNC, and the TV show “Friends.” During late August an announcement was made that made my fan girl radar kick into high gear. Infilarakia-central-perk[1] honor of “Friends” celebrating the 20th anniversary of the day the pilot episode premiered and made fans fall in love with Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross, New York City would be host to a “Central Perk” Pop Up shop.  A replica of the gang’s daily coffee hangout. I NEARLY LOST MYSELF! I did. I have been saying how they needed to do something like this FOR YEARS. I remember reading awhile back that the only Central Perk that existed was somewhere in London and well let’s face it being a New York girl, London isn’t really around the corner. So when I heard this news I was ecstatic. If you doubt my dedication to the show or my love of Central Perk…I say click HERE…and all will be understood. Yup that’s right July 2013, I hosted my very on Central Perk themed party….and it was a blast.

My friends and I had been planning to go for weeks. But things kept coming up and we kept having to put it off.  The shop opened up September 17, 2014 and closed October 18, 2013. ONLY A MONTH! A MONTH! The more I read about it, the more I knew I had to make time to get there. I am a huge TV nerd, and I love behind the scenes footage, I love props and getting to learn things about what goes on behind the camera of my favorite shows. Set secrets are my weakness. I love them! So when I heard we would be able to take a picture on the famous orange couch, I was super stoked! I can’t even explain to you how much of a tv nerd dream that has been for me. And even hosting my own party to try and make it happen couldn’t lessen the joy I felt when I actually got to do it! I sat where Jennifer Anniston sat!

 Here’s my journey…(in pictures)

Walking toward it...noticing the massive line we were in store for

Walking toward it…noticing the massive line we were in store for…[4 blocks long just to give you an idea]

Finally waiting in line!

Finally waiting in line!

My friend and I got there around 2 in the afternoon we went on Columbus day. And I don’t think any other day would have made a difference….there was going to be a line either way and I have to say we were really lucky with the weather. It wasn’t too cold, not hot, and the rain held up until we were all said and done and on our way home…then we got soaked sans my brilliant idea not to bring along an umbrella. Throughout our wait we got a few time updates as we moved along the line. From a wait of nearly 4 hours from when we got on line, we finally made it to the front of the shop at around 5. 10350506_10204538798131139_1073587806796967014_n[2] 10703663_10205227888122746_1550153432122752342_n[1] 10696251_10204538795651077_937552607732796906_n[1] What I found so interesting was how considerate the host at the door was. She briefed us on how the shop worked and where we had to go for our picture with the couch and where the gift shop line was and urged us to take pictures. She also shooed away passing people who were stopping and taking pictures through the door, stating that all of us waiting online deserve to take as many pictures as we want, that people just walking by do not just get to waltz in and steal photos. I thought that was really cool of her. 3 & 1/2 hours later and we are in! We are greeted by Pat the Dog and an array of other Friends memorabilia and specific character wardrobe. 6263_10205227862802113_4935844683677028435_n[2]

Next we move on to a glass case showcasing props used in many different episodes, all enveloped in episode stills of the show and cast photos surrounding us.

Next we move onto the coffee station…where we not only got our choice of FREE coffee but also got blessed with some very signature set props

After we got our free coffees we explored at bit more before waiting on the line to take our picture on THE famous orange couch. How cool are those signed scripts, did you know the show was almost called “Six of One” or “Friends Like Us.”

10671402_10204538817611626_6007604147307247028_n[1] 10670177_10204538812451497_7670436084499965316_n[1] 10710814_10204538814691553_7758564405456959110_n[1] 10712743_10205227882202598_5021549395261534578_n[1] DSCF4102 DSCF4111

They had a big flat screen playing friends clips and there was a definite 90’s soundtrack playing over  the sound system…pretty sure I remember singing along to “I believe I can fly.” On the wall behind us were some sketches of the signature sets. Also notice the umbrella holder from the show was there as well!

***Heading to the COUCH!***

They had someone taking pictures for you…but you were allowed to have someone take a picture for you using one other personal device.

Then you were given a card with a website and photo code to obtain your FREE picture.

Sitting on that couch was surreal, I did my best to take it all in. I have to admit though I was a bit skeptical of whether they were telling the truth that the couch was the real couch used on the show. But once I saw it in person and saw how dingy and dirty and flat the cushions were, I knew it was the real deal! haha. And I was cool with it! The only thing missing were our big coffee mugs; they made us put our coffee down when sitting on the couch #nospillzone. But other than that it was super awesome to live out a tv nerd fantasy of mine. I even sat in the green chair on the side [I hope that was the real chair too] and had a little fan girl moment for myself just before heading to the gift shop area.

DSCF4113

The gift shop area was right at the center and across from the coffee station. When we got to it, there wasn’t much left. I really wanted a mug or a bracelet but they were sold out of the mugs and they had a few bracelets left but they wanted like $40 for one bracelet. So I settled on a central Perk frame to put my picture in, a magnet and a bunch of buttons.

DSCF4130

You couldn’t use cash; only debit or credit cards, which was kind of annoying but I guess with all the craziness they didn’t want to be responsible for managing money too. They had like an iPad type credit card swiper. But thankfully I had read up beforehand and knew to have the money on my card and also they give you an option of being sent a receipt through email or text. Which is good.

After the gift shop, I remember turning to my friend and asking where the gold frame around the peephole was…that I remembered reading it was supposed to be there and that I hadn’t come across it and low and behold it was cleverly discussed right near the gift shop exit.

20141013_174429 20141013_174440

It was encased in a peephole esque tv box playing a few Friends clips and it was see through so when you looked close you saw the frame but from the side you can see clearly. This was a replica of the original.

All in all it was an amazing experience. The 3 and a half hours weren’t as bad as I thought and once we got the first block down we moved quicker to the front. The only downside was I had to pee! We were so close that I thought I’d make it, but when we hit the block of the entrance they said we’d have to wait about another half hour (which didn’t end up being true) but I ran into the deli/café next door to use their rest room anyway. I wasn’t about to take any chances of having to rush through my once in a life time chance of seeing all of this amazing tv stuff.  When I came back I was trying to get back on my place in line and I was stopped by a security guy. I was like “I just went to the bathroom. I’ve been here the whole time.” [Mind you this guy saw my face like 10 times throughout the waiting period.] My friend was screaming over saying “she’s with me, she’s with me” and he almost didn’t let me in. I just stopped talking and looked at him with a face. Then all the girls that were waiting behind us in line that whole time were screaming out “she was here, she was here, let her in.” And he was like “Oh ok, they say you were here…I’m sorry, if you weren’t I wouldn’t be able to let you in, but they say you were, so go ahead.” And I was let in. I was like yea I was getting in here no matter what….you would have seen me flip out, there would have been tears…it would have been a scene.

But never the less I went, I saw, I conquered and I actually did manage to put my camera down here and there and actually take it all in. What a cool experience and worth the wait!

I think Eight O’clock coffee did a damn good job. The staff was nice, the atmosphere was that of a coffee shop, and looked like Central Perk! Despite the crowds of people and the amount of things to look at, everything moved rather smoothly and it was a cozy comforting experience. The different stations made it all easier and organized and I never felt pressed for time or rushed. It was so cool to see all the set pieces and stage props and everything. I’m such a huge Friends fan, it is my absolute favorite show, and this was such an amazing thing to experience and it was free! My favorite thing! haha. Take a picture sitting on the orange couch from Friends…check. #bucketlist It did so well, they really should open up a real coffee shop here in NYC for good!

And for my fellow Friends fans who do not own the box set…BIG NEWS…

It’s coming to Netflix January 1, 2015!

Could you BE any more excited???

Listen to the album in full HERE

[Quick Disclaimer…I want the target dlx edition with all the extras (certain things you can’t get by downloading online,) so I haven’t been able to buy my copy yet, but I do intend to. I don’t download illegally. I just listen to the tracks online until I get the chance to buy it. So please download either through iTunes…or buy the album in stores. I know me saying this will do little to  stop illegal downloading, but I just wanted to state my piece. I am in no way promoting piracy. The link I used for the album is just one I found by googling, I have no relation to it, use your best judgment.]

Read all the full lyrics HERE (some lyrics seemed a bit off to me…but you can be the judge.)

Judged for her dating history and her strong belief in love, Taylor Swift’s constant optimism and wavering hope are what the music world needs.imagesLG954LUV

Ms. Swift’s highly anticipated new album; 1989, was officially (and legally) released yesterday October 27, 2014 and it is BOSS. So I thought I’d do a Full Album Review. Target is selling a deluxe edition, in which you get the original 13 songs, plus 3 extra bonus tracks, a pack of polaroid pictures of Taylor AND 3 voice memos from Taylor’s personal cell phone of her recording the raw ideas of three of her newest songs. This seemed so intriguing I had to review the Deluxe edition. And props to Taylor for encouraging people to buy actual CDs. Can’t get them polaroid pics on iTunes!

taylor-swift-performs-at-jimmy-kimmel-live-in-hollywood_1[1]This year and the time leading up to the release of her new album, we’ve been seeing a sassier, sexier, non filtered, girl turned into woman. Not only have we been bear hugged by the anthem “Shake it Off” but also Taylor’s image has gone from preppy to crop top, short locks sexy. She’s growing up, she’s showing a more mature side of herself. But she remains classy as always Ms. Swift. Classy as always.

The album is definitely a bold transition from country/pop to pop. But what I love about this album is that although you know many of these songs could be (and probably will be) instant radio hits….the record is pop with some soft undertones. She takes a new approach vocally as she takes on a rapping style or sing/talking technique for some songs. I think this is so interesting, because it almost feels like she is sitting in your living room, reading from a book, telling us her stories.Taylor Swift is an artist who takes the time to hand you her heart. You can trust her, trust what she’s saying, because you know she’s speaking from experience. The album is an open advice column. Learn from her. She’s been there. She’s here for you. She gets it. You are not alone. -Michelle Leigh Writes

But despite the running theme of broken or fractured hearts and ghosts of past relationships haunting her, the album is surprisingly light and upbeat. That’s the pop genre for ya! Dancing to heartache and cheers-ing to the next one. But don’t count Taylor out just yet…or ever. Her lyrics are meaningful, truthful and beautifully constructed.  And there is the underlying theme and message of hope in love and keeping your head up against all those trying to bring you down. Taylor Swift is a supporter of love and this album is a testament to that. If you take away anything from this album…know that Taylor Swift is the real deal. Because in life…love is the center of it all. And she gets that….loud and clear. #HopelessRomantic #AndDamnProudOfIt

Screen-Shot-2014-10-22-at-6.01.42-PM-1414015856[1]

Track By Track, my thoughts, and my favorite lyrics. Oh the lyrics! (I went overboard of course, but what else did you expect.) I coined my favorite tracks for you with a (*). And let me tell you it’s nearly impossible to pick a Top 5, so I’m not even going to try.

*1. “Welcome To New York”

This is a strong starting song. It immediately makes you realize that this is a new Taylor Swift. And it mirrors a girl moving to New York or visiting New York and gaining new places, new surroundings, new perspective and new beginnings. Much like Taylor is going to experience with this album’s new direction. The sound is very sonic and galactic, I feel like it’s a heady out of body, in your body song. A range of feelings. For me I am going to have to *INSTANT FAV* this jam!

Lyric Choice:

It’s a new soundtrack I could dance to this beat, beat
Forevermore
The lights are so bright
But they never blind me, me
Welcome to New York
It’s been waiting for you
Welcome to New York
Welcome to New York

******

Like any great love
It keeps you guessing
Like any real love
It’s ever changing
Like any true love
It drives you crazy
But you know you wouldn’t change Anything, anything, anything…

*2. “Blank Space”

Another *INSTANT FAV.* Lyrically I adore this song. I love how Taylor references her list of exes and how people assume because she’s fallen in love so many times that she somehow is this insane girl. She addresses this but you also get the feeling of her unwavering respect for love and constantly being open to it. It’s a sexier, older Taylor.

Lyric Choice:

I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven, sin
Saw you there and I thought oh my god
Look at that face, you look like my next mistake
Love’s a game, wanna play

******

Grab your passport and my hand
I could make the bad guys good for a weekend

******

Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game

Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I’ll write your name

******

Cause darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream

*3. “Style”

This song is not only a *Favorite* for me…(3 for 3 Taylor, I think I’m falling in love #AlbumOnRepeat) but this seems like what would be an instant hit on the radio. The chorus is perfect. She’s telling a story here about falling for the bad boys and knowing they won’t stay, knowing that this won’t end well, but allowing herself to be swept away. And just simply still going for it, whole heartedly. The feeling, the bad boys, the rush, the love however real or not real it may be…never goes out of style. It will always be this way. Boy meets Girl. Girl falls for Boy. Boy plays girl. It’s a vicious circle, and yet she doesn’t wanna break it.

Lyric Choice:

Cause You got that James Dean day dream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down, we come back in every time.
Cause we never go out of style
We never go out of style

You got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt.
And I got that good girl fig and a tight little skirt,
And when we go crashing down, we come back in every time.
Cause we never go out of style
We never go out of style.

Take me home
Just take me home
Just take me home

*4. “Out Of The Woods”

This song is spiritual, there is this tribal aspect to it, with the chant like background vocals,  and the chorus is so simple, yet so gorgeous. It speaks volumes. A troubled relationship, nearly hopeless, and yet there’s that hope at the end of the tunnel, holding onto it, there’s a chance, there’s a love still there, after everything it’s been put through. Just waiting for the heartache and pain to finally fall away, and then realizing, it isn’t all that bad. Taylor released this prior to the album release and I fell in love with it, so yes I will *Favorite* this song as well.

Lyric Choice:

Remember when we couldn’t take the heat
I walked out, I said “I’m setting you free”
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up
You were looking at me.

******

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good.

5. “All You Had To Do Was Stay”

Beautiful lyrics, beautiful song, reminds me a little of the vibes of Taylor’s last album RED.

Lyric Choice:

People like you always want back the love they gave away
And people like me wanna believe you when you say you’ve changed
The more I think about it now
The less I know
All I know is that you drove us off the road

******

Then, why you had to go and lock me out when I let you in

******

Here you are now
Calling me up
But I don’t know what to say
I’ve been picking up the pieces of the mess you made
People like you always want back the love they pushed aside
But people like me are gone forever
When you say goodbye

******

You were all I wanted
But not like this

*6. “Shake It Off”TaylorSwiftGapad[1]

EPIC. An Anthem. The “Rap” breakdown part…like what??? YASSS please, yessss. The video is a stroke of genius as well. Watch HERE. Calling out all the haters, all the critics, all the skeptics and making them bob their heads and dance along…turning them into fans. YOU KNOW it’s true, don’t even mess around. The song is a fantastic message, to all people telling them to not care about what others think or say about you, shake it off and keep doing your thing. As the album’s first single, it serves as a perfect introduction, the perfect depiction of the message Taylor Swift wants to convey to her fans. We are united, we are one. A *favorite* of course. I can’t hear this and NOT dance! It just gets into your veins and your arms immediately do the “shake it off” move from the video. Am I right??? Yes, yes I am.

Lyric Choice:

It’s like I got this music
In my mind, saying it’s gonna be alright
Cause the players gonna play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate
Baby I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off

******

(the rap part)

Hey, hey, hey
Just think while you been getting down and out about the liars
And the dirty dirty cheats of the world
You could have been getting down to this sick beat

My ex man brought his new girlfriend
She’s like oh my god
But I’m just gonna shake
And to the fella over there with the hella good hair
Won’t you come on over baby we could shake, shake

7. “I Wish You Would”

Taylor explains in her voice memo (Track 18) that this song is about how a guy thinks his ex girlfriend hates him. But she doesn’t, she’s still in love with him and wishes he would come back. This song also brings me back to the memories and messages from the RED album, the sounds are very different, but that raw emotion, is still evident. It’s something that Taylor does well, making her real to her fans, making her relatable.

Lyric Choice:

I Wish You Would come back
Wish I never had hung up the phone like I did
I Wish You know that I never forget you as long as I’m living
Wish you were right here, right now, it’s all good, I wish you would

I wish you we could go back
And remember what we were fighting for
I wish you know that I miss too much to be mad anymore
Wish you were right here, right now, it’s all good, I wish you would

8. “Bad Blood”

A friendship gone south. I do really like this song. I think some times friendships end for a reason. And you are better off that way.  Some serious “Holla Back Girl”- Gwen Stefani vibes, and I dig it! And that high school cheer chant vibe rocks this chorus hardcore.

Lyric Choice:

Cause baby now we got bad blood
You know it used to be mad love
So take a look at what you’ve done
Cause baby now we got bad blood

Hey!
Now we got problems
And I don’t think we can solve them
You made a really deep cut
And baby now we got bad blood
Hey!

Did you think we’d be fine?
Still got scars on my back from your knife

******

Band-aids don’t fix bullet holes
You say sorry just for show
If you live like that, you live with ghosts

9. “Wildest Dreams”

Sexy. Breathy. It’s definitely more mature. She makes reference to a bit of a more sexual relationship, very timidly of course, but it’s there. The idea of wanting those memories to stay with him even if he only dreams of them, and they end up going their separate ways. She wants him to remember her well.

Lyric Choice:

He’s so tall, and handsome as hell
He’s so bad but he does it so well
I can see the end as it begins my one condition is

Say you’ll remember me
Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sun set babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you’ll see me again even if it’s just in your wildest dreams
Wildest dreams

******

I say no one has to know what we do
His hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room
And his voice is a familiar sound, nothing lasts forever
But this is getting good now
He’s so tall, and handsome as hell
He’s so bad but he does it so well

*10. “How You Get The Girl”

Word to the wise, Taylor’s giving you some advice…some perspective from the other side…listen up boys.  SUCH A GOOD TRACK! *Favorite.*

Lyric Choice:

Say it’s been a long six months
And you were too afraid to tell her what you want
And that’s how it works
It’s how you get the girl
And then you say

I want you for worse or for better
I would wait for ever and ever
Broke your heart, I’ll put it back together
I want you for ever and ever

And that’s how it works
It’s how you get the girl, girl, oh
And that’s how it works
It’s how you get the girl, girl

******

Remind her how it used to be, be
Yeah, yeah
With pictures in frames, of kisses on cheeks, cheeks
Tell her how you must’ve lost your mind
When you left her all alone
And never told her why
And that’s how it works
That’s how you lost the girl

11. “This Love”

Gorgeous. The harmonies in this are insane. The backup imagesES6MZZSKvocals along with Taylor in the chorus just make you feel like you are sitting in a cathedral or an opera house, listening to magic. It’s got an indie vibe to it, which I really love, and the synthesizer, drums, and guitar create a beautiful collaboration. I’m no musician, but I’m just a fan sharing my love for music, lyrics and telling you what I hear and how it makes me feel.

Lyric Choice:

Been losing grip, oh, sinking ships
You showed up, just in time

******

This love left a permanent mark
This love is glowing in dark
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me

Your kiss, my cheek
I watched you leave
Your smile my ghost
I fell to my knees
And you’re young, just to run
Come better to watch me

*12. “I Know Places”

A *favorite.* It’s darker, sexier and as Taylor said in her voice memo (Track 17), it’s about people trying to ruin a couples love and the couple trying to escape that and hide.

Lyric Choice:

You stand with a hand on my waist line
Good to see that we’re out in plain side
I can hear them whisper as we pass by
It’s a bad sign, bad sign
Something happens when everybody finds out
See the vultures circling in dark cloud
Love’s a fragile little flame, it could burn out

******

They take their shots, we’re bulletproof
I know places
And you know for me it’s always you
I know places
And you’re dead at night, your eyes so green
I know places
And I know for you it’s always me
I know places

Cause I, I know places we can hide

13. “Clean”

Overcoming heart break. A pure song. Love mirrors addiction here which I thought was a really cool metaphor. A video for this would open so many ideas for amazing imagery.

Lyric Choice:

You’re still all over me like I wine-stained dress I can’t wear anymore
Hung my head, as I lost the war, and the sky turn black like a perfect storm

Rain came pouring down when I was drowning
That’s when I could finally breathe
And that morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean

******

10 months sober, I must admit
Just because you’re clean don’t mean you miss it
10 months older I won’t give in
Now that I’m clean I’m never gonna risk it

14. “Wonderland” -Bonus Tracktaylor-swift-pants-2-1414175894[1]

Uses Alice in Wonderland as a metaphor for a doomed relationship.

Lyric Choice:

Flashing lights and we, took a wrong turn and we
Fell down the rabbit hole
You held on tight to me
Cause nothing’s as it seems
Spinning out of control

******

We found wonderland
You and I got lost in it
And we pretended it could last forever
We found wonderland
You and I got lost in it
And life was never worse but never better
In wonderland
In wonderland

So we went on our way
Too in love to think straight

******

Didn’t you call my fears with the cheshire cat’s smile
Didn’t it all seem new and exciting
I felt your arms twisting around me
It’s all fun and games ’til somebody loses their mind

*15. “You R In Love” -Bonus Track

A *favorite.* A song that basically sums up the reason why Taylor Swift makes music; “You understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars And why I’ve spent my whole life trying to put it in words.”  And why we all love her for it. A song about love and how it is everywhere, all around us, and it doesn’t take earth shattering actions to realize you love someone. Just by simply being with them and getting to know their heart. The tears may happen here, just warning you.

Lyric Choice:

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love
You are in love

******

One night he wakes, strange look on his face
Pauses, then says, you’re my best friend
And you knew what it was, he is in love

******

You understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars
And why I’ve spent my whole life trying to put it in words

*16. “New Romantics” -Bonus Track

I actually feel like this song would be HUGE. I hear the chorus and the beat and I just see the public dancing like crazy for it. This song would be ridiculous on tour. I really love the name, love the concept, I just have a connection to it. I always call myself a hopeless romantic so I just get it.

Lyric Choice:

We cry tears
Of mascara in the bathroom
Honey life is just a classroom

Cause baby I could built a castle
Out of all the bricks they threw at me
And every day it’s like battle
But every night feels just like a dream
Baby we’re the new romantics
Come on, come on along with me
Heart break is the national anthem
We sing it properly
We are too busy dancing
To get knocked off our feet
Baby we’re the new romantics
The best people in life for free

****************************************************

Voice memos of Taylor’s writing process. Each song happens differently, but here she gives you an inside look at the beginning stages of a few select songs. Literally recorded on her cell phone. This is something I feel no artist has ever done…I could be wrong…but whatever it’s still really cool!

17. I Know Places (Taylor on piano with vocals)

18. I Wish You Would (Writing to Track; Taylor singing to a Track produced by Jack Antonoff)

19. Blank Space (Taylor playing guitar with vocals in recording session with producers yelling out direction and extra vocals ideas)

This was the coolest idea ever. There is something so amazing about hearing the raw tracks. It gives me chills to even get a glimpse into the work that was put into this album. I love music and I loved that Taylor was kind enough to share her writing process with us. She gave us her diaries and we will take good care of your words and your heart Taylor. Bow Down people, there’s a new Queen in town. Taylor Swift you are a BOSS, and a legend in the making. I curtsy before you.

Justin Timberlake- The Actor

images[4]

In my mind Justin Timberlake’s main talent will always be entertainer, singer, songwriter. But as we’ve gotten to know the actor in him, it appears that he can excel in the genre of films as well. (shout out to The Mickey Mouse Club for that!) Justin has starred in over a dozen films, with genres including; suspense, action, and romantic comedy.[I would love to see him in a horror flick! Or playing a dad or something!] But some of my favorite Justin Timberlake movies include; The Open Road (2009), Friends With Benefits (2011), and Trouble With The Curve (2012). [Click movie title links for trailers.]

images[3] imagesKVROZDCB trouble-with-the-curve[1]

*Some Favorite Moments*

“You Look Good.” Scene- The Open Road

“Let’s Play Tennis.” Scene- Friends With Benefits

“Oh yea I’m pretty much what you’re lookin’ for then.” Scene- Trouble With The Curve

These films are a mixture or drama and comedy ie: dramaedies. They showcase some of Justin’s best acting chops; and place him in more organic roles; Men with substance and heart, who know how to love given the chance and a little push and who always know how to make a girl laugh. This is where Justin Timberlake’s acting shines. In a way it’s like he’s able to channel himself into these characters. Because let’s face it ladies, Justin’s a pretty charming, funny, romantic guy. #DickInABox #NotABadThing

Don’t get me wrong movies like In Time (2011) Alpha Dog (2006) and Runner Runner (2013) all allow him to push the envelope a little bit and step outside his comfort zone and really explore grittier characters, which he executes well. But I think he’s so naturally good at comedy that in romantic comedies he just excels beyond the norm, and comes off all adorable and it just gets your heart all fluttery. It’s way more believable, to see Justin Timberlake playing an advertiser who accidentally falls in love with his best friend courtesy of a few casual sexual experiences in Friends With Benefits, rather than an overly geeky/douchey teacher who can’t play a guitar or sing to save his life like he did in Bad Teacher. Watch scene HERE. Seriously that was a bad movie. (Still love you JT!) It’s like at the end of the day; Dude you’re still Justin Timberlake and I don’t buy this character you’re playing, you’re a musician for craps sakes. But it was fun to watch and mind-numbingly entertaining.

I think Justin has a good acting career ahead of him, alongside his music career of course. But what’s even more interesting to me, and I say this because I love films and telling stories [I majored in Film & Broadcasting in college], is that Justin has been dabbling in writing and directing lately. He wrote and directed his music video for his hit “TKO“, he co directed the Michael Jackson video for he and Michael’s newest duet “Love Never Felt So Good,” and recently executive produced a documentary about young child golfers called “The Short Game.” So I think that’s another route he can go and would probably rock it. Because there’s nothing he’s not good at. Who knows maybe one day we’ll meet on a movie set…how’s bout it J.T? 😉 #TheDreamIsBig #GoBigOrGoHome

My Top 5 Favorite Michael Jackson Videos

Michael_jackson_panther_dance 38971-michael_jackson_jpg_630x461_q85 michael_jackson

#5: You Rock My World

Clocking in at over 13 minutes, another gangster related mini movie was born. And I’m ok with this. This was the first single off of Michael’s last album Invincible, while he was alive to record and release new music himself. To be quite honest this album had not been as well received as all his previous ones. But I have to say that I really enjoyed it. There are songs from that able that I adore, and that I think should be recognized more. You Rock My World, is another guy chases girl only this time Chris Tucker lends a hand brings the funny. I can count 3 jokey shout outs on Chris’ account to Michael’s previous hits….”That girl’s a pretty young thang…I don’t know I got a bad feeling about this, I think we should just beat it…this girl is dangerous.” To me this video proved that Michael still had it. Although his game could use a little work, “Hey! Come here.”  Michael just because you cat call at a girl, don’t mean she’ll come running. Just Sayin’. 😉 But props for always wanting to save a “damsel in distress.” It’s all about wanting to keep her safe. Then at the 3 minute mark…something magical happens, Michael’s silhouette takes the stage and the original song is started off as an a capella. It’s a beautiful thing to hear the shuffle of his feet as he throws out each move and the snapping of his fingers. You know another legendary dance routine is about to take you over. Brace yourself for the king.

#4: Black Or White

Oh hey Macaulay Culkin….kids and their loud music. Parents just don’t understand. The guitar in this song is unbelievable and gives me goosebumps. It don’t matter if you’re black or white. It’s simple. We are all equal. That’s the message here. “I’m not gonna spend my life bein a color.” And Having been scrutinized for his ski color change, Michael set the record straight. [disclaimer: Michael was said to have bleached his skin due to a skin condition] But never the less this video is incredible and sends a great message. I love the ending where all the faces of people of all different genders, race, color, looks, shapes, sizes, change and morph into one another! Bravo Michael. Message received.

#3: Smooth Criminal

Clocking in at nearly 10 minutes, Michael delivers again. In his typical fedora and suit,  only Michael Jackson could flip a coin from across the room into a jukebox and kick start a song. 😉  “Annie are you ok?” And we set off into yet another record making dance routine. The famous MJ lean (no hands ma!) What I love about Michael videos most is that every video follows a specific plot line. I’m a sucker for a gangster squad storyline. You are thrown into this world and you believe it. You are a part of it. And every disagreement, every fight, is fought through dance. And it’s a beautiful thing. Each video has coined us an epic and trademark dance move/ moves.

#2: The Way You Make Me Feel

“GO ON GIRL! ” This video is actually such a favorite of mine it just misses the #1 spot. If there was no Thriller this would be it. But then again no one wants to live in a world where Thriller doesn’t exist! Ok so let me break it down for you. Not only is this song probably my favorite Michael Jackson song…(that’s saying a lot!) but the storyline of this video is just SO GOOD. Basically it’s a guy chasing a girl. Girl passes him up and he screams “HEYY!!!” (my favorite part) You knock me off of my feet now baby, HOOOO!” and then the lion/tiger growl cues and the beat starts and Michael begins his strut and conquest of getting the girl. It is so so good, that I can’t take it. And the silhouetted dance break is badass.

#1: Thriller

Directed by John Landis. Greatest music video of all time. I love how it tells a story. It goes from a movie date to them basically living in their own movie. It breaks the barriers between reality and fantasy. The makeup is still kick ass and attests the stand of time. Those zombie dancers could easily be seen on the zombie phenomenon The Walking Dead. Even though effects and horror have come such a long way, and some may say this video is a mirrored cheap version of a mini horror movie. This video came out in the 80’s which means the cinematography, costume design, and makeup done in this were all cutting edge and broke the mold. If you ask me, I still get slight chills when watching this video or even just hearing the song, and when Vincent Price’s laughing cackle shrieks out at the end, and we see Michael turn around with those yellow cat like eyes. Ugh SO GOOD. Love this video! Your skin just crawls. It’s a video that makes you scared one second and want the dance the next. The dancing is the coolest routine I’ve ever seen and the song is just…well let’s put it this way…. This video is complete proof of why Michael Jackson is considered the greatest entertainer of all time. Thriller is the longest music video (clocking in at about 14 minutes long) which started the mini movie music video trend both for Michael and future artists.

[See Justin Timberlake’s What Goes Around…Comes Around]

*The thing about Michael’s videos is that there’s always a story. there’s always a build up. They start slow, hit you with a climax then resolve the issue at hand. So many videos these days are rubbish because it’s all big booty girls who are half naked grinding on a pole. There’s no storyline, no intrigue, no cinematic dreamery. Music is such an amazing outlet and how beautiful it is when you can see it being bright to life. The video for a music video should always match the message in the song.*

Random Bonus Video…because it’s just too good to leave out!

A haunted house gone wrong. Stephen King was involved in the story writing…which I never knew and that makes so much sense now that I think about it.  In this creeper Halloween special Michael lives in an old creaky creeper mansion, and when neighbors come over to complain Michael challenges those who call him a freak. I remember watching the making of this with my family. We were all gathered around the tv and were completely amazed. It was a big special and video release, just in time for Halloween. This is a legit film short. Coming in at over a half an hour. Michael reinvents his level of creativity and the barriers he will cross to achieve it. Fun Fact: Michael plays “Michael” and the overly judgmental guy in a suit and several other characters!

The Essential *NSYNC Album Review

rs_634x634-140729150058-634.nysnc-the-essential-album-cover

Download on iTunes, find on Amazon, or in Walmart, etc.

I realize this is quite late. But better late than never, right? 😉

“I think the entire compilation is a really good overall encasing of what *NSYNC was known for; talent and entertainment and for basically making all us young girls giddy as hell! It’s a serious throwback and we 20 something year olds have basically named ourselves the nostalgia generation. So if this fits you, and you’re a hardcore *NSYNC fan, buy it!”- Michelle Leigh Writes

It all started with a tweet. Isn’t that always the case? We are living in the new digital age. R.I.P sweet typewriters, dell computers, aim, and let’s face it…aol.com. Anyway, getting back to the good stuff. On July 28th my jaw dropped for a brief…VERY brief second when 1/5 of *NSYNC; Lance Bass sent the tweet pictured below.

lance-bass

A NEW *NSYNC album. And only ONE day notice! But I need to dig out my t-shirt and my bobble heads and…. BUT HOW CAN YOU DO SUCH A THING to a MEGA Fangirl!

$13.88??....what get it for $11.88 at Walmart!

$13.88??….what get it for $11.88 at Walmart!

In that minor second of happy panic I knew it was too good to be true.

Oh. It’s just another form of a greatest hits album. So it’s not really “New” is it?

Sigh.

*pause for 90's girl sigh*

*pause for 90’s girl sigh*

Fangirl hearts breaking everywhere. EVERY.WHERE. Mine amongst the many.

*Although I have to admit the faux *NSYNC reunion rumors are getting easier to ignore, it’s happened just too many times, I won’t believe it until I see it with my own eyes!

Nope boys I don't buy it...try again. #IWANTAREALREUNION

Nope boys I don’t buy it…try again. #IWANTAREALREUNION

I took my slight frustration to my Facebook; as we all do. Don’t lie. You do it too.

July 28th my status read:

So apparently Walmart’s releasing a new *NSYNC album tomorrow, swell, glad I had no idea…P.S. it’s basically a greatest hits…which just sucks…don’t give false hope Walmart just don’t!

July 29th my status read:

Omg my inner 90’s self is so pissed…Dear Media, *NSYNC did NOT “drop a new album” none of the guys knew about it AND there’s no new music on it!

So what’s the deal with this album? *NSYNC members had no clue this was being released. Why was the label being so secretive? Well after Lance’s tweet, I googled my ass off…naturally. And checked my *NSYNC related sources and by sources I mean I stalked the guys social media accounts and found that the “new” album was a compilation of old hits, some unreleased/unreleased commercially tracks, some fun collabs and covers, soundtrack contributions and some random tracks that were released as side projects. [AKA the Britney Spears/*NSYNC McDonalds CD]802e9_51gxfHuuDaL-150x150

Lance did a whole interview about the album release on his radio show and he basically won me over! Listen to it HERE!

By the way take my Facebook anger with a grain of salt. I wasn’t angry at the band or their music. I LOVE their music. I love them! I was just frustrated that no one knew about this album. The guys should have been notified it is their voices, and some of the tracks Sony used on this CD were actually written by members of the band. And I’m not gonna lie even though I knew it wasn’t gonna happen, I was secretly hoping for real deal 2014 music. Not to say that the unreleased tracks aren’t boss. Cuz they are. But being the psycho fan I am, I pretty much heard 99% of the album (unreleased tracks and all) back in the 1996-2002 time period, thanks to Lime Wire.

OMG who remembers Lime Wire?

Initially my first thought was well I have almost all of these songs; I own all their albums and have most of the other singles thanks to Lime Wire again. (I was a kid, please don’t punish me…free music is free music.) But when the thought of not buying the CD came into my mind, my 90’s fan girl grilled me and put her hands on her hips, tapping her foot at me. She was pissed. So naturally I gave the album a listen on YouTube. [GOD I LOVE YOUTUBE!] And I basically fell in love. So a month later and here we are. “New”/ Old *NSYNC album playing in my ears. I guess I’m growing up a little since I didn’t run out and get it right away, I waited it out….

IMG_20140825_163435But I was up in Pennsylvania on vacation and consciously sought out a nearby Walmart and bought my copy. (So there’s that.) I guess there are some things I just can’t help. It was the right thing to do. Here’s how it went.

My Brother: What’d you get?

Me: What do you think I got? (holds up cd)

My Brother: (gives me a face) So you bought a cd you already have all the songs to?

Me: Um that’s not true…there’s unreleased music.”

#ImJustified

My cousin: “I didn’t know people still bought cds?”

Me: Oh I do. I love cds. There are some people that I just feel like I need to own their CD.”

I gotta say new album or not, *NSYNC looked nice back up on a shelf….right next to Ms. Britney Spears. The way it should be.

Band member Lance Bass said of the album on his radio show, Dirty Pop: “There’s a lot of these songs I don’t think I’ve ever heard, I remember recording them but I’ve never heard them before, so I’m interested in just hearing them.” JC Chasez tweeted about the album’s release, stating: “I had the strangest dream last night that some old friends and I had a top 10 record on iTunes. Crazy right…” “Chris Kirkpatrick said of the album; “It’s great to release some of the songs that had never made a record before! I’m glad our long time fans get some new music!” Joey Fatone also said; “Pretty interesting this album comes out, which I really had no idea, and it’s in the top of Amazon and iTunes… we owe it to our fans. Thank you.” –Via Wikipedia

And yet Justin Timberlake has yet to comment. But instead of getting all angry fan girl on him, I will just chalk that up to the fact that homeboy needs to learn how to tweet for himself more. I hate seeing –Team JT (no offense Team JT, we do appreciate the updates).

The Essential *NSYNC is boss, such good vibes listening to it.

tumblr_mv3eu9Xms81sewqg3o5_500There is something about listening to *NSYNC and hearing young Justin Timberlake vocals that transports me back to the amazingness of the 90’s and my childhood and how everything was just so much easier. Memories are connected to those songs. And hearing those voices again just reminds me of what made me fall in love with them in the first place. It’s a feeling I can’t seem to let go of.

*Some of my favorites*

_nsync_4*NSYNC may have been known as a boy band, but they started off as an A Capella group. If you really take the time to listen to their self titled debut album, you will see that their vocals are a lot more clear and there is less room for fancy background music and beats and you realize they actually can sing. They all harmonize so well together, and each shine in their own tone of voice, creating a nice dynamic group. It was a beautiful thing to see vocals that fell through the crack back then, like “I Thought She Knew,” “Sailing,” and “Selfish,” be given new life on this album. I think the entire compilation is a really good overall encasing of what *NSYNC was known for; talent and entertainment and for basically making all us young girls giddy as hell! It’s a serious throwback and we 20 something year olds have basically named ourselves the nostalgia generation. So if this fits you, and you’re a hardcore *NSYNC fan, buy it! And if you’re not, buy it anyway…maybe after hearing such a great selection of songs; it’ll turn you into a fan. Crazier things have happened.

However, do I think they missed a few key songs? But of course.

Songs They Forgot

“That’s The Way Love Goes” duet with Janet Jackson.

“Dancing Machine” Live duet with Michael Jackson.

“I’ll Never Stop” *NSYNC

“What’s Going On”– (Marvin Gaye Cover) All Star Tribute; feat. *NSYNC

Just a few that came to mind.

n_l*NSYNC’s transition to more pop like music happened in their second studio album and the wobyebyebyerld loved it. Songs like “Bye Bye Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me” made us all sing at the top of our lungs and dance those synchronized dance moves we all know and love. But their third and final album (as a current band) was a play on their new found fame, with songs like “POP” and “Gone” we saw the boys had turned to men and they wanted to be recognized as such. And to be recognized as actual artists. Hence….Justin Timberlake’s soon to be exit from the group, breaking teenage/pre-teenage hearts everywhere.

giphy

994f28f6125d3ea738a1bd4a78ea75d3.252x310x1For me, *NSYNC is always going to be golden. They were such a crucial part of a golden era and I loved everything they’ve ever put out…even the album they had no clue about. It’s a great 2 disc, 34 song track list,!!!!34!!!! ($11.88 at Walmart…2 discs, 34 songs, I’ve bought many cds in my life and I thought that was a steal!) The album pays homage to their vocals and gives us all a little hope that one day it may just actually happen. If you ask me I think if the label was looking for some kind of validation from the fans as to whether or not an *NSYNC album would do well on today’s charts. Well I think you got your answer.

The Essential *NSYNC was released July 29th. And was quite beautifully received by fans, via twitter people praised their favorite old tracks and newly released favorites. It was even in the top 10 albums on iTunes, next to new generation boy bands. Fangirls got you *NSYNC. Always. Believe in us. We believe in you. Come back for real and you’ll see.

2013 Vmas "Reunion" a year ago...hmmm and this album just dropped...hold onto hope fellow fangirls!

Ugh these dang reviews always turn into a love affair of me pouring my guts out to you…so let’s wrap this up before I think of more to say. In a nutshell, 90’s girls will never forget and never let you go…accept that *NSYNC. Accept that Justin Timberlake. And tweet me back will ya? #HowRude 😉

Kris Allen – “Horizons” Album Review

kris-allen-horizons1

Listen to the Album HERE

*Available in stores and on iTunes NOW!

So it’s been about two years since Kris Allen released his sophomore album “Thank You Camellia” and today he’s hit us with his third studio album “Horizons.” Shall we review…I think we shall…

This album is quietly sexy.

-Michelle Leigh Writes

The Lyrics aren’t available online yet, so I did my best to listen carefully! 🙂

I’ve * my instant favorites for ya! 😉 Although I’m sure they are subject to change!

1. Young Love

*I’m feeling like I’m running through a field. Prancing, I’m prancing.

 Lyric Choice:

“I won’t be the one that makes you question all your faith. I won’t be the one that makes a crooked smile straight.”

2. Prove It To You

*Sexy. Sassy. And every other appropriately provocative “S” word. A very The Civil Wars  vibe song. (still so sad they’ve broken up…it’s a musical tragedy…because they are magic)

 Lyric Choice:

“I know I had to let you go
But I had to find out on my own
That you were always the one
I don’t think I deserve you,
But I feel like I’m gonna love you
For all my life! No matter what I do!
Give me a chance; give me a chance
to prove it to you.”

3. *Beautiful & Wild

*Gorgeous! I LOVE the imagery and metaphors created in the lyrics. I think he should make this a single, because the video could really be something special.

Lyric Choice:

“I just wanna be a dreamer, a dreamer that’s wide awake. I just wanna be a lover even if my heart has to break.”

4. In Time

 Lyric Choice:

“In time we’ll love what’s been broken in us.”

5. Lost

*I’m a sucker for a ballad. A piano and a strong voice are like my kryptonite. It’s a beautiful combination.

Lyric Choice:

“Maybe I’m lost, but at least I’m looking…You’re onto me, you’re onto me, I know.”

537f77c9726708b0058b5085

6. *Don’t Set Me Free

*YASSSSS!!!! Is all I need to say. FAV! I caught them MJ style breathy sounds (ya’ll know what I’m talking about!)

Similiar to “My Weakness” – From “Thank you Camilla” album (and I was obsessed with that song hardcore when that album came out. That album was legit all I listened to the Summer of 2012.)

Lyric Choice:

“You’re kinda crazy, but that’s what I love about you. You’re gonna kill me but I’ll die with a smile. You’re gonna break me, but you’ll do it in style. So lock all the doors and throw away the key. Cause I am your prisoner, but don’t set me free.”

7. *Everybody Just Wants To Dance

*OMG KRIS YASSS! FUNKY! Feel Good Song! I’m literally dancing…so swell job Kris. 😉 I can already foresee the obsession. Probably awesome Live in concert! I am at a disco/square dancing party…Cuz…yea that’s a thing, as of now…cuz I just said it.

Lyric Choice:

“Maybe it’s the economy that makes us close our minds and wanna use our feet.”

Yes it is. It is the economy. (and anxiety)

8. Parachute

Lyric Choice:

“You keep ground, until I can breathe. Don’t you ever give up on me.”

“Hit the ground running running; tell me that you’re coming coming, I can feel, I wanna feel, your heart beat next to me.”

9. *It’s Always You

*Ok um…falling ALL over this song. Yes…someone right a song about me? Now. Please. Thank You. 😉

Lyric Choice:

“Wish I had another story to tell, Wish I could sing about anything else, But every time I sit down the only thing to come out in melody ain’t right babe, I can’t lie, it’s always you.”

“It’s always you, your name on the tip of my tongue, it’s always you, you’re my favorite place to run, I always knew my heart was yours to take and never mine to give away. It’s always you.”

10. *Girl Across The Room

*Ahhhh. I can’t. I just can’t.

Lyric Choice:

“From where I stood he must have done all the things that a good man should.”

“And I realize we never talked but from what I saw, I thought that we fell in love.”

“Yesterday I saw your picture in the paper, guess you finally went and took his last name girl. So I keep swimming in my sea of fish. But there was always one thing I’ll wish. I probably should have sent you flowers, probably should have let you in, probably should have told you girl that I love that dress you were wearing.”

Some Bruno Mars ishh yo. (And I don’t mind)

 My Final Consensus:

537f790a7167081b468b4c0e

Kris Allen you are just killing me softly  over here, with them beautiful lyrics. Lyrics! Oh gosh I live for these singer songwriter albums. They are always so good. They make me jealous, I wish I wrote them. If only I could write songs! Oh that would be freakin’ AWESOME! Anyway…moving on.

I think it’s safe to say that Kris Allen accomplished making women everywhere fall in love with him…yet again.

An album full of positive yet emotional vibes, chantey hooks & crowd sing alongs, dance tracks, and breathy vocals; that have matured very nicely since his American Idol days, what more could you ask for in an album? I loved every bit of this listening experience.- Michelle Leigh Writes

Season 8 Winner; Kris Allen!

American Idol Season 8 Winner;
Kris Allen!

This album is quietly sexy. Yet distinctively portrayed in Kris’ signature singer songwriter style. Kris Allen himself is quietly sexy. He sneaks up on you. He was the humble, yet adorable underdog on American Idol. I’ve always been one to root for the underdogs. He won Idol, and by extension, caught the hearts of many. And in doing so he continues to prove his heart and his talent with the music he puts forward for our ears to hear. Kris Allen doesn’t need gimmicks; he doesn’t need to pretend to be something he’s not. He’s got it going on with his quiet (yet obvious) sexiness. 😉 And yes I did just say that.

So take a LISTEN for yourselves and give your ears a much needed break from the same 10 incessantly overplayed songs that plague the radio. But WHY YOU GOTTA BE SO RUDE??? (yea you know you like that song). If you’re a lyric junkie like me, you will have a field day with this new album and dance a little while you’re at it. Solid album Kris. Swell Job. Keep being your sexy, talented self. We all love you for it!

Feminism; Embrace it, Empower it.

For so many years women were told they couldn’t do something as well or as effective as men or that they couldn’t be as powerful as men could. And to that I say….Fuck it. (excuse my french). It’s incredible to seegender-equality how far women have come and how much drive there is to continue that progression.

In fact, I guess it isn’t exactly a progression, because the drive and motivation for women to do as we wish and say what we feel and think has always been within the hearts of all women everywhere.

And with that said, I’d like to share these two campaigns I’ve come across as of late.

Campaigns with positive, inspirational messages for women, and young girls everywhere.

Let’s start with the Always campaign that I’ve seen plastered all over facebook…

#LikeAGirl

“When did doing something “like a girl” become an insult?”

“Why can’t “run like a girl” also mean win the race.”

*I love this ad because it goes to show how societal restraints have distorted a phrase that could be used to motivate. It shows how young people can change the view of that, and that they have the power to do so. I respect “Always” and female director Lauren Greenfield for doing such a stellar job on this campaign. It brought tears to my eyes, I have to admit.*

“In my work as a documentarian, I have witnessed the confidence crisis among girls and the negative impact of stereotypes first-hand,” said Lauren Greenfield, filmmaker and director of the #LikeAGirl video. “When the words ‘like a girl’ are used to mean something bad, it is profoundly disempowering. I am proud to partner with Always to shed light on how this simple phrase can have a significant and long-lasting impact on girls and women. I am excited to be a part of the movement to redefine ‘like a girl’ into a positive affirmation.”

-Lauren Greenfield

*******

Next, I’d like to share this empowering message brought to us by Pantene.

Not Sorry #ShineStrong

“Why are women always apologizing?”

“Don’t Be Sorry…Be Strong and Shine.”

*I loved this concept the minute I saw it. I love how they took something used throughout social media to make a clever point. #SorryNotSorry is basically used to say you don’t wish to apologize for what you are doing. As a woman I find myself apologizing for stupid little things all the time and it’s amazing to see that women don’t always have to say sorry for speaking their minds or for being bold in their actions. Or for simply being who they are. Men never make apologies, so why should we.*

“As women, we weaken our own strength (in ways men never do) at work, at home, during moments in between. Sorry is more than just one, little, reflex word.

Pantene #ShineStrong stands for women empowerment. This video highlights some of the ways that we, as women, weaken our own strength.”

Relive Your Childhood With Girl Meets World

Ok 90’s babies…listen up, because we have much to discuss.

As you may have heard the childhood memories maker series “Boy Meets World” that shaped the l345d5e710000_2_13466hearts of many of us; “Boy Meets World” has been reinvented and brought back into a new series spinoff “Girl Meets World.”

10167960_482544888511663_5655244891795866398_n

For those who aren’t familiar with Boy Meets World, it was a story of a young boy named Cornelius “Cory” Matthews who with the help (and at times push from) his best friend Shawn finds his way tumblr_lxryzlm74L1qei0mto1_500through all the mistakes and ups and downs of being an adolescent. We watch Cory grow from a young boy, to a young man, and we get to see him go from thinking girls have cooties to falling in love with Topanga (What’s a Topanga?…get out just get out!); the weird girl who may or may not decide to shave her legs, and who draws red lipstick hearts on her face and tribal dances in Cory’s kitchen during their brainstorming for a school project. We watch as Cory balances all the different relationships in his life and we see the people and the life lessons that shape the man he is today.

Um yes this is sitting pretty on their book shelf...

Um yes this is sitting pretty on their book shelf…

In the new series we follow Cory and Topanga’s family as they raise two children; Riley and Auggie. This story is about Riley’s journey into the world and how she will make it hers and step out of her father’s slightly taller shadow.10476262_509955329103952_2405926121138190096_n

I have to say when I heard about this I nearly combusted. I’m an extremely nostalgic person. And Boy Meets World was such a great show to grow up with that it made me super excited to relive that feeling. The buzz this show was and still is getting was crazy and only made the premiere even more of an anticipation. The interviews, the behind the scenes photos, the guest stars; It was like a giant flashback that I didn’t mind living in forever.

However, with that being said. There is something you need to understand going into this. Before even watching the pilot. You need to understand, Nostalgia is all well and good. But we can’t live in the past. Girl Meets World will not be Boy Meets World. And it shouldn’t try. What it needs to do is be it’s own show yet embracing opportunities for homage to where it all starting. And I have to say, in my honest opinion, I liked it! It was adorable. Granted being that it’s on Disney channel, the target audience is significantly younger then most of us 90’s babies are, and the writing has to remain a little more PG then it was on Boy Meets World. BUT it was fun to see Cory and Topanga as parents, did anyone else secretly feel like an Aunt. 😉 I had to tune in to see how they pulled this story together, and I’m glad I did.10406529_508571489242336_6260273196246744778_n

Girl Meets World premiered on tv on Friday, June 27th at 9:45. (Regular time: Fridays at 8:30 starting July 11th, *no new episodes the week of July 4th*)

As far as I can remember, when we last saw Cory, Topanga and the gang, Topanga had received an internship offer in New York, and she and Cory were off to New York to start their new lives as a tumblr_n28y5sldtt1r3z3gbo1_500married couple just out of college. Along for the ride were Eric and of course Shawn. While Rachel and Jack were off to the peace core. Whoever knows what happened to Angela. Haha. And left in Philly were the rest of the Matthews family; Amy, Allen, Morgan, and baby Joshua. [Click for goodbye scene.] And last but certainly not least, the very beloved, very insightful Mr. Feeny. Who before dismissing his class for the very last time, said something that will always stay with me “Believe in yourselves. Dream. Try. Do good.” As Topanga asks “Don’t you mean do well?” And he replies simply… “No. I mean do good.” It’s a scene that gets me Every. Damn. Time.

So with that picture in mind, fast forward 11 or so years later…til new aged Girl Meets World.

Girl+Meets+World

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

Cory and Topanga are parents to Riley and Auggie, living in New York, where Topanga carries a briefcase and wears and blazer and Cory is best known as Mr. Matthews; John Quincy Adams’ U.S. history teacher, and also Riley’s worst nightmare since she’s in his class. And he’s trying to run her life, so she says.

The opening scene is between Riley and her best friend Maya. As they try and decide whether or not Riley can stand up to her father and tell him she wants to ride the subway by herself. Thinking she’ll know his answer, Riley and Maya decide they have a better chance of getting what they want, by sneaking out her bedroom window. (Cory and Shawn flashback? I swear they didn’t know what the front door was until they were about 15. haha)

Just as they do, Cory chases them back in, only to explain to her that the world is hers and let’s her go. It is here that we notice the instant dynamic of the show. Where Riley says to Maya…

“How long do I have to live in my father’s world?” -Riley

“Until you make it yours.”-CoryBen-Savage-_-Danielle-Fishel-Girl-Meets-World-300x194

“Will you still be there for me when I do?”-Riley

“Right here. We’ll be right here.”- *ENTER* Topanga

****The moment I almost cried, Oh the feels… the nostalgia got to me.****

Cory plays a protective father, striving to help his daughter Riley make the best choices for herself and we see a daughter who is trying to find her way and find who she really is. Riley is a good girl, always used to following the rules, but while her best friend Maya is a rebel, Riley wishes to be “cool” like her and goes on a mission to “reinvent” herself. Much like the dynamic between Cory and Shawn. Cory was always the more levelheaded, think before doing something stupid, while Shawn never thought. Maya is the female version of Shawn in this case. The rebel with a cause. It’s really cool to see this dynamic with two females in the roles. I think it causes for a different perspective and doesn’t re-tell the story Cory had to tell.

Girls are going to experience everything differently, they are going to feel differently about things. They are going to go through certain things, the boys never did, or never understood. P.S. it’s Girl Meets World and I think Topanga should have more lines as she is the original Girl. Because after Cory was the Boy in Boy Meets World he became the Boy in Boy Meets Girl and well, Topanga wastumblr_me0x4d75kX1r0z3hjo1_1280 that Girl. Topanga held the responsibility to portray the girl’s perspective in Boy Meets World. She was independent and made choices that were her own. Despite giving up Yale to be with Cory, Topanga never made her life all around a boy, she knew there were other aspects to life. She never NEEDED Cory, she knew how to survive without him, she just Wanted him. There is a difference. And when the opportunity to move to New York came, she took it, with Cory supportively by her side. And let’s face it Topanga (the mom) is way more suitable to deal with Riley’s up and coming teenage girl, mood swings then Cory (the dad) will be. And I believe Riley and Maya have a better understanding of the term “woo her,” than Cory and Shawn ever really did.

Speaking of Wooing. Enter Farkle. Farkle is the new Minkus of the group. Spoiler alert, I believe he’s gmw4Minkus’ son…BUT besides the point Farkle is the very smart, very much in love with Riley and Maya. He definatley will try his hand at wooing. We’ve already seen a few attempts at flirting. The same way Minkus was infatuated with Topanga, Farkle is infatuated with Riley (and Maya.) The friend dynamic between Topanga, Cory, and Shawn, seems like it’s going to be relived through Farkle, Riley, and Maya.

GIRL-MEETS-WORLDEnter Lucas. Riley’s cute “subway boy”, who turns out to be a new student in her history class, who she has her sights on. Riley much like Cory has a lot to learn about flirting. *Thumbs up*…doesn’t count Riles. Just ask your father. While Maya much like Shawn, is going to be the trusty friend flirting guide.

While most of the time I was kind of expecting “Uncle” Shawn to pop up, I realized it made sense that he didn’t. Not in the first episode at least. When trying to brand a new show, and make it it’s own, having the initial dream team of Cory and Shawn in a show entitled Girl Meets World, may just squash all the efforts of Riley and Maya’s friendship.

The show also follows Cory and Topanga’s life; raising their children. So the way they did it made sense. They had to set the stage for the story that will be told. However, knowing that Farkle is Minkus’ son (the audience doesn’t know just yet, but I’ve read it) and seeing that Riley is Cory and Topanga’s daughter, I half expected Maya to be Shawn’s daughter but I’m not sure how likely that is.  However, I wouldn’t put it past the creators to have Shawn pull a Mr. Turner and become a badass motorcycle riding, mentor to Maya. Hell Shawn did like to write, maybe he can teach English. 😉 Although seeing how Shawn moved to New York with Cory and Topanga at the end of Boy Meets World, Shawn is a must for a guest star. And from what I’ve seen Shawn, Amy, and Allen are to be in future episodes. Uncle Joshua has also been rumored to have been cast, so that should be super fun to see.

Eric was missed dearly as well. But the few seconds Cory’s son Auggie had on screen was enough to convince me that Auggie inherented his uncle Eric’s sense of humor. He was totally aloof and made absolutely no sense, and he had me cracking up. Which leads me to believe that Riley and Auggie’s relationship could possibly mirror Cory and Eric’s, except this time Riley’s the older sibling.

What we did get that was a true token and treat to fellow Boy Meets World fans like myself came towards the very end…as Cory and Topanga graced Riley with her very own Metro Card to ride the train herself….10245307_486535888112563_93080846331486668_n

“You trust me with this?”- Riley

“You showed us we can.”- Topanga

Riley goes and comes back and her parents are waiting for her as she gets of the train.

“You guys waited to come pick me up?”-Riley

“We told you we’d always be here for you.”-Topanga

Behind the scene there’s a huge poster with Mr. Feeny on it that reads “It’s cool to stay in school” tumblr_n5y6w8ctOG1qic8ixo3_250and then Mr. Feeny himself appears (in what I can only suspect is in Ghost form) as he says-

“Well done, Mr. Matthews.”- Mr. Feeny

Then after a smile and nod from Cory he disappears.

And I was a goner….it was such a slight homage and yet it was enough for me to want to tune in every week, to see what else they’ll have for us.

I hope they do this throughout the series, as if Mr. Feeny serves as his conscience. He did say in the final episode of Boy Meets World, that Mr. Feeny would always be with them. And well, it’s amazing to see that he is.

What I loved most about the episode were the small hints back to Boy Meets World. They were pretty subtle, but they were there. Aside from the ones I’ve already mentioned, there were a few others…

Farkle falls asleep and mumbles in his sleep just like Cory and Shawn used to do.

Cory uses his class (and his parenting style) to teach valuable life lessons, about being who you are and making the world your own. Much like his parents and Mr. Feeny did with him.

Cory calls his students by last name…for example, Maya Hart..is Ms. Hart in his History class. And gives his students the class room floor whenever they have something to say. Much like Mr. Feeny used to do in his HISTORY class. Talk about following in the footsteps of greatness.

abc_girl_meets_world_02_jef_130617_wblog

They used the same transition music they used to use in Boy Meets World. Listen closely!

Riley and Maya stage a no homework rebellion, similar to when Cory and Shawn rebel against the idea of taking a test in Mr. Turner’s class when he said there would be no test if they just read the book. However, while Riley followed along in Maya’s plan, she secretly still does the homework for both herself and Maya. Proving that she knows the difference between right and wrong and where to draw the line. While Cory went right along with most of Shawn’s crazy anecdotes. And suffered the consequences later on, which usually lead to the grounding of a lifetime and a lot of groveling. Riley gets her own Metro card and more freedom for being who she is and knowing her limits.

I think eventually Girl Meets World needs to be switched over to abc family, right now it’ll do ok on Disney. Riley is still so young. But if the series lasts til she gets older, I think it’s going to be a little difficult to tell certain stories on a network like Disney. The original Boy Meets World used to air on abc. And although it never crossed a line, I think a lot of the appeal of the show was the idea that the humor was a bit risky within reason and the show actually dealt with serious life lessons and issues kids and teens and adults face. On a network like Disney, Riley’s story won’t be able to get as far as Cory’s did. So being that abc family is abc 7’s sister network, it would just make more sense. abcfamily is home to many shows with a young audience yet they have a little more freedom to tell stories and express issues a little more aggressively and maturely. 10375157_508879882544830_4291745016359880317_n

With all that being said. Godspeed, Girl Meets World. It’s the same creators as Boy Meets World, so I have a great deal of faith! As a 90’s baby who til this day still laughs hysterically at Eric’s Feenayyy call, tears up when Shawn has difficulty telling Angela he loves her, and who is still looking for the Cory to her Topanga, I still tune in to watch the BMW reruns and will continue to see where Girl Meets World takes the newest Matthews Family installment next. And remember kids…

Dream. Try. Do good.

Girl Meets World airs Fridays at 8:30 on Disney Channel.

P.S. Who else caught that Jackee Harry guest star spot…

a.k.a “Lisa” from Sister Sister, Holy 90’s!

Ed Sheeran, Be My Husband. + (“X” Album Review)

Ok so first things first….HAPPY “X” DAY, [other wise read as “Happy Multiply Day” Ed Sheeran Fans…or #Sheeranators if you will…it’ll catch on. And when it does I win money. 😉

**Do your google research Michelle…this term already exists…no money for you…just the self gratification of being a Sheeranator**

Ed-Sheeran-x-Alternate-2014

I have anxiously been awaiting this day, to hear the entire album.

I was so obsessed with his last album “+.” [I guess Ed is really into Math or somethin’] Songs like “Small Bump” and “Kiss Me” will sneak up on you.

I can’t even tell you how my heart broke repeatedly as I listened to “Give Me Love” on a loop. Shout out to “The Vampire Diaries” for that one, they played it during a dance sequence between Damon/Elena/Stefan and I just fell apart…I was a puddle on the floor, hence when the obsession began.

And “Lego House” still ranks high on my -must listen to- playlist.

So being that I had a total love affair with his first album I was excited to hear how his musical talents have multiplied…haha get it? See what I did there. 😉 #Dork

Any who… (awkward…pause…allowance for time to get over that corny joke)

LISTEN TO ED’S “X” [Deluxe Edition]

Trust me it’s worth it.

“X” is Sheeran’s 2nd album, which can make one worry if he will strike gold again or suffer a dreaded sophomore slump. Our first introduction to Ed’s sophomore album was through “SING” released as a single back in April, with Pharrell Williams along for the ride. And well let’s just say it’s been doing quite well. I challenge you to try and not  SING….LOUDER….it’s just not possible. You must ohh ohhh ohhh ohhh ohhh along with him.

He then released a video for “ONE.”

Then recently uploaded a concert  Live from Dublin, which was a mix of old songs and new. And the Live Versions were breathtaking. New songs he performed included; “Don’t,” “One,” “Take it Back,” “Tenerife Sea,” “SING” and “I See Fire” (track written for “The Hobbit.”) I tell ya, I’ll take live versions over studio versions ANY DAY! Especially with someone like Ed. I’m not gonna lie I’ve watched that concert a good 50-100 times, I replayed the performances of “Take it Back,” “Be My Husband” [Nina Simone Cover *No he doesn’t change the words and no it is not weird or “Gay” sometimes a cover is just a cover because it’s a good song and Ed’s version is unexplainable. Like I literally have no words for how amazing it is.*] and “Give Me Love” every time I watched. He’s very talented its almost unreal. That show was literally just him on stage, with his guitar, and a loop pedal. It was like he was a one man band. And his voice and his personality and interaction with the crowd made you just realize this guy was not only an incredible singer, but an incredible musician and an extraordinary artist. The feeling of watching that was so amazing, that I could only imagine what it must have been like to actually be in that audience while he was up on that stage, a shy few feet away. My gosh, seeing him live is on my concert list.

He had been releasing a song a day all last week, in support of the album’s U.S. release today,

June 23rd. TODAY!

So needless to say I’ve heard quite a few songs…

Don’t * Afire Love * Bloodstream * Thinking Out Loud * The Man * Photograph * were all released on youtube last week and I was even more in love with “X.”

“X” Tracklist (Deluxe Edition)

X

Too many lyrics to showcase my love for, so go on, have a ball….Check em out HERE

READ for more information and fun side notes about Ed’s new album.

I will be purchasing this via CD…because I make a point to buy the actual cds for people that really count. 😉 Plus I just love CDs! #90skidwontquit

However, now that I’ve finally listened to the entire deluxe edition…thank you YouTube, you beautiful thing! Let me run down my thoughts…

*My Top 3*

(although subject to change, because the more I listen to the album

the more I fall in love with a new song)

Take it Back (the live version is magical)

Thinking Out Loud

The Man

Ed had released the standard edition tracklist on instagram

ed-sheeran-x-tracklistAnd from this list I have to say I was most intrigued to listen to “Nina.”

Any song that is named after a woman, is enough for anyone to be intrigued by. Because as if every song he writes isn’t being dissected and torn apart line by line to try and figure out who it is about…well “Nina” pretty much slaps you in the face and tells you… well this is a song…about a girl…and her name is Nina. haha

It’s kinda cool timing for him though because he does a Nina Simone cover of “Be My Husband,” a lot so it could have been an ode to her, BUT he was rumored to be in a relationship with scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt, more well known in the UK, for now. I say rumored relationship because I didn’t follow their relationship and I don’t know much about her. But I do believe they were together and she may or may not have written an entire album about him and now I guess this is his song response to her. And the more you listen to the lyrics the more you know it’s about someone who he had a relationship with and not an ode to Ms. Simone.

It’s interesting how “Don’t” rumored to be about a cheating scandal with ex-girlfriend Ellie Goulding places just before his appropriately named song response to Nina. I’d say “Don’t” and “The Man” are Ed’s “Cry Me a River.” They are aggressively sexy and kinda make you happy you aren’t the girl who the songs are about, but rather the girl who could make him feel all better, haha. Although compared to those bitey songs, “Nina” is actually kind of twistedly sweet; basically asking the girl to leave him for her own good. Ed is known for pouring his heart out, and I think that only helps people connect better with him for it. He’s real, what you see is what you get and he doesn’t mess around. He seems like he’s not putting on a show or putting up a front, he does what he does because he wants to grow as a musician and he wants to make music that matters. He raps in his own way and it’s freakin’ AWESOME. I’m not one to like rap music at all, but Ed’s rapping just makes me giddy and say “Aw shit” at the same time. He’s not trying to be something he’s not, he’s an R&B and Hip Hop fan who just so happens to have a musical soul and who’s also a lyrical genius. #GingerGenius is what I like to call him and no I am NOT googling it, cuz I wanna think it’s MINE!

A lot of people seem to compare “x” to “+.” Some unhappy with the growth he’s made, and the change in his sound. I definitely think it’s normal to compare an artists’ records to each other, I do it with Justin Timberlake all the time. But the thing is a good artist knows how to grow within what they’re good at, along with experimenting and growing and putting new spins on things you already know work. A good artist knows they’re “brand,” and explores their talent in different forums of music. Timberlake is a perfect example of that. There are elements of his new record that date back to his first solo debut album “Justified.” And yet The 20/20 Experience is a whole new ball game for him, musically. It’s an experiment and there are sounds you never heard him use before. But it all comes together and ties in. So I have to say Ed is up there with Justin. Ed has managed to keep what the world loves about him; his honest heartbreaking lyrics, his knack for rapping sick verses around a killer chorus, and just him and his guitar and a loop pedal, while allowing himself to branch out and use new sounds as well and try new things like working with Pharrell Williams on songs like “SING” and “Runaway.” Both of which Ed has been quoted wanting to achieve a “Justified” sound. Um yes, it all just really comes full circle doesn’t. I definitely think a collaboration between Ed Sheeran and Justin Timberlake will be in our future. They would be epic together, and my worlds will collide and I will win Money! haha

So in a nutshell…

The way I judge this album is on how it makes me feel, and it makes me feel similar to how amazing it felt to hear “Give Me Love” for the first time. It felt like I was hearing his heart beat, and that hasn’t changed listening to this album. So I don’t think there’s a sophomore slump in your near future, Ed, none at all.

“X” is now playing on a loop

and Ed is back on my obsession list!

Excellent Job, Mate. 😉

I wasn’t even a little bit worried. Not even for a second.

And lastly… Your 23 and single (as far as I know) and

I’m 23 and single…you see where I’m going with this? 😉

Be My Husband, Ed Sheeran, Be My Husband. ❤

“Stuck In Love” Movie Review

So I had heard this movie was good and thought to myself…

Why the hell not.stuck in love

So I sat down with a cup of green tea, some graham crackers, and my trusty ole pal Netflix and gave it a whirl…

and boy am I glad I did.

It’s basically a must watch if you are a writer.

And a must watch if you are a human.

The story revolves around the ups and downs of life for the Borgens family; a family of writers.

The dad is a well known writer, the daughter is an up and coming writer (and studying to become a better one in college), and the son is realizing writing is closest to his heart while he tries writing about his invisibility to the high school girl he has fallen in love with from a distance. Full Plot Here.

The Movie Stars a few familiar faces…

Jennifer Connelly, Greg Kinnear, Lily Collins, Nat Wolff and Logan Lerman.

The Netflix description reads:

This quirky tale follows a year in the lives of the Borgens clan, which is in a tailspin thanks to the family patriarch’s obsession with his ex-wife.

Ok so I don’t know about you but that synopsis did absolutely nothing for me. It’s very vague and I felt like there wasn’t much of a hook. Instead of the comedy-drama which it actually is. I thought I was going to be faced with a weird obsessed father figure out to redeem his ex wife with creepy intentions. I wasn’t entirely convinced it would be a good watch. But I gave it a chance and was pleasantly surprised.

c73218fcb8ca335b16ef9c3fae8cd1d6

“If that was your opening line of a book, your reader would be hooked.”- Bill Borgens

“Stuck in Love” with it’s back talking college daughter afraid to love and it’s somewhat hopeless romantic of a son quietly captures your heart. And in the drama that is a failed marriage and serious issues like infidelity, divorce, the trials and tribulations of navigating high school life, and even death, there is a quiet whisper of smiles, of laughs, of sweet sarcasm. The acting in it is so natural and so realistic, it makes you feel like you know this family. Or even as though you’re a part of it. I swear I’m the girl version of Rusty!

stuckinlove1

“You’re cute Lou, but you reek of romance and good intentions”- Samantha (where do I sign up Lou?)

Lily Collins nails her role as “Samantha” and blends nicely with Logan Lerman’s character “Lou.” It’s a dynamic we’ve all seen; girl grows up with a broken home, which turns her off to the idea of looking for love. She stays promiscuous, but shy’s away from the good guys, to shelter herself from getting hurt. With a sarcastic verbal crotch grab to the one decent guy who ever actually wanted to get to know her for her, knocking him down before he even gets a word in. Ya know on the off chance he gets too close. Lerman delivers every girls fantasy; a sweet guy, who was raised with respect and integrity and who values a girl for who she is. Hey Lou, if Sam doesn’t want you…come find me 😉

Nat Wolff’s character “Rusty” is a closeted romantic. The more you watch the more you realize the similarities between he and his father played by Greg Kinnear (Bill) are uncanning. Both in love with love or the idea of love. Both writers. Both not wanting to let go of the possibility of reaching for the love they shared or could share with the woman in their life. Rusty is a young teen who has little life experience to write about. So in order to write better, he channels more into life, and tries really living it. thumb

Kinnear is the driving force as the father “Bill” to this dramedy. He narrates as the story unfolds. His voice reeling you in, making you want to know what happens next. His “obsession” with his ex-wife; who has since moved on and remarried, consists of him continuously wearing his wedding band, stalking and spying on her and her new husband in their own home, failing to look for new love outside a convenient “friends with benefits” relationship, neglecting to write new material, and setting a plate for her at every thanksgiving stating that “she’s coming back.” It’s been three years. billNow mind you that may sound creepy and it is to the casual onlooker. But when you get to the root of the issue, which is being in love with someone so much that it consumes your life, that it consumes your heart and soul, that you can’t live without them. Or in some strange way you can breathe and live, but you’re not liv-ing. Then how can you blame him. How can you fault him. How can you cast aside a man who loves like that. That’s not a crime. If anything not feeling like that at least once in your life, is the true travesty. That’s what I think true love actually feels like. Because if life is not about love, then what the hell do we have left.  It’s a beautiful story and Kinnear plays it in a way where you not only forgive him for the stalking, but you feel for him and in some sense it leaves you rooting for the once married couple, to get back together.

It was just a beautiful story. Great acting. Great writing. Seamless Directing. There are such beautiful moments in this movie, such beautiful lines, poetic even. I’m telling you this will touch your heart. And for all those writers out there, it will give you new faith, and inspire you. I know it did for me.

It’s a shame, I read that it had limited theatrical release in the United States on July 5, 2013. I honestly don’t remember hearing about it. But I’m glad that Beauty Guru Meghan Rienks recommended it, in a recent Favorites video. So shout out to Meaghan…thanks girl! Glad I watched it! And you should be glad too…get on that.

“Stuck In Love.” Netflix it. Now.
