Makeup Starter Kit Gift Idea [Drugstore]

I came up with this gift idea for my mom for Christmas. Of course it can be used for any occasion. And I liked it so much, that I thought I should share.

My mom was always asking me to borrow little things here and there. But our skin tones are different and what works me doesn’t always work for her. She didn’t have many of the basics in her kit and she would always say one of these days she wanted to get herself some new products and that she needed my help to pick things out. But I knew she would never go and buy herself all this, so I took it upon myself to put this gift together for her.

When doing this it was a bit difficult to judge the skin tones, so I just tried my best. I looked at her old makeup that I knew she was using at that time, to get an idea of the shade. I also kept in line with the brands I know she likes to use.

When it comes to colors I went with Dark Brown for eyeliner and Brown/Black for mascara, because she doesn’t like full black. So you can customize to the person’s preference. I know she doesn’t usually do lipstick or eyeshadow so in order to nudge easily toward the transition, I kept the colors natural/neutral in the Beige/Brown/Mauve family. Nothing too bold. A tinted lip balm in always a safe bet too.

Last but not least- presentation. It was Christmas so I just wrapped each item in wrapping paper, so it was fun for her to open all the different items one by one. You could easily have put everything in the makeup bag and then into a nice gift bag. Or you could set it all up into a nice basket. The choice is yours. Get Creative!

Now let’s chat pricing. I tried to grab some things that were on sale. At the time, I remember there were some makeup brands on sale. But some things I knew I had to pay full price for. The whole kit probably cost around $80. And to me that is a lot for drugstore makeup. But I use drugstore makeup and for the most part, I don’t mind the quality. It does the job for my everyday look. If I would have went to Sephora and tried to get that much for $80 that would have been impossible. So I thought it worked out rather well. My mom was happy. 🙂

Each makeup starter kit can be color customized to whoever you are giving the gift to.

Happy 60th Barbie!

Yesterday on Saturday, March 9th, Barbie celebrated her 60th Birthday/Anniversary. I am a total Barbie fan. In fact I’ve done some posts about Barbie in the past that will give you a better idea of how I feel about our girl Barbs. 😉

In order to celebrate I thought I’d share a few pics of me playing with Barbies as a kid/pre-teen and share with you some of my favorite Barbies that were released while I was growing up. Yes, I played with Barbie until I was like 11 or so. #NoShame I still get to play every now and again, with my little cousins or my god daughter. It brings me back and I love it! 😉

These are just some I remember having as a kid. I’m sure there are tons of others that I loved.

I buy Barbies for my god daughter who is now old enough to play with them. And I even buy them for my niece too, even though she’s still a little bit too young. I just want them  to know the journey Barbie has taken and how far she’s come. Yes I’ve bought them some curvy dolls. In fact, I never got to purchase one for my collection, so as I picked up one for my niece, I figured why the hell not? I should own a curvy Barbie. The little girl in me, still supports her love of Barbie dolls. I chose this curvy Fashionista, because she reminded me of myself a bit. She has hips and thighs! And her outfit was funky and floral like the hippie side of me.

Oh and FYI Barbie has a VLOG channel on YouTube and it is AMAZING!  I’m going to be 28 later this month and I can’t believe how her words can hit home even at my age. It’s really great to see her speaking on important issues young girls and women still face today. I loved the last two vlogs she posted, such amazing positive messages for the youth of the world to absorb. Barbie teaches girls that they can do anything and to stick up for themselves. In this world we need positive role models for our girls! Barbie wasn’t always considered a good/smart/healthy role model. Even some youth today, consider her “stupid.” But I loved her, and with all the positive changes being made today to her brand, I love her even more. I can only hope that I will one day, have my own daughter and pass down my Barbie collection to her and teach her all that Barbie has taught me.

And just for some fun, I thought I’d share their Birthday Barbie video with you too!

Happy Birthday Barbie!

Thanks for the amazing memories, and for the inspiration!

You were my childhood.

Too Much? No honey, Just Enough.

As I scroll through Instagram recently within the past few months, I’ve come across a few creative posts that really resonated with me. And the message behind them was so powerful, I thought I’d share.

The first one was posted on a writers instagram I follow- writers.are.day.dreamers but it was reposted from nightypoetry. This poem is so spot on, to how I feel at times. If I’m really excited about something, I get super animated in my storytelling. I talk fast, I ramble, I’m loud, I talk with my hands. If I’m really frustrated or upset, I will also be loud, and maybe my facial expressions may be very obvious. I’ve been told I’m “taking things too seriously,” I’m “too sensitive,” I’m “over-reacting.” If someone reacts negatively to you, maybe it’s YOU. That is a very possible situation. You can’t always blame the person who reacts, they are usually reacting to someone you did or said.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand everyone is human, and we aren’t perfect. Sometimes people can just be dealing with a lot, or just having a bad day and they can snap at you for no real reason, other than you happening to be in the line of fire at that time. But often it takes two to get in a tiff. So next time someone claps back at you, think about what you may have done to receive that reaction. You have to own when you’re wrong people. Don’t play the blame game. I know it’s hard, trust me, I hate it, I hate confrontation. I’ve had moments where I really screwed up and felt terrible and had to talk to the person and apologize because I knew it was my fault. It’s awkward and uncomfortable. But in order to keep healthy relationships in your life you need to know how to admit when you’re wrong. And just try better next time.

However, with this specific poem, I just feel it so much. Again, with that Too Much feeling. I’m a writer, I’m someone struggles with anxiety and constant over thinking and feeling is part of all of that. Feeling so deeply, that sometimes that weight gets incredibly difficult to bare.

We walk through life trying to be the best versions of ourselves, and no matter what we do, or how we try, sometimes it just feels like we are too much of everything. That we don’t belong. That people don’t get us. That we have to conform or change to fit other people’s standards. Can’t we just be ourselves? Those who really love us will love us no matter what. I love the last two lines- “Let me be too much. It’s too awesome.” It leaves you with hope and the idea to believe in yourself and everything you are.

Screenshot_20190203-030201_Instagram

This next poem, was shared by 7th Heaven actress Beverly Mitchell on instagram. However, the author is Hollie Holden. The poem is a story about a woman’s relationship and conversation with her own physical body. It touches upon how we stress  what we eat, what we do, if we do enough, if we need to improve ourselves. How we look, if our stomachs are flat enough. And it’s constant. She captures how sometimes we as women just do not feel right in our own skin. These feelings are common amongst many, but that doesn’t mean this way of thinking is healthy. In her last line in this poem about a woman asking her body what it needs- Holden writes- Can you just love me like this? And that in itself is an incredible realization. Why can’t we just love ourselves for what we look like, who we are, what we are. Why are we always pressured to change or adapt, or fit society’s standards of beauty. Listen to your body. Love your body. That is what she needs.

Lastly, this next post is from Lena Dunham. Dunham has always been this trail blazer of sorts. She is well known for creating, directing and starring in her hit HBO series- GIRLS. The show premiered in 2012 and ran for 6 seasons. The story followed four girls in their twenties, trying to navigate life in New York City. Sounds very familiar, yes it’s been done before #SexInTheCity, but Dunham’s version always pushed the boundaries even more.

She recently posted a photo of herself on instagram with a caption [Below]. And I really loved what she had to say. It resembles that same idea of feeling “Too much.” How she comes to this realization that she isn’t for everyone, and she doesn’t have to be. And that everyone is not for her. For the right people, too much is just enough. Her too much can meet other people’s sense of too much and all can be right with the world. She further goes on to say that she weighs the heaviest she ever has, but that she is the happiest she’s ever been. Showing that the feeling of beauty does not only have one physical look/one mentality. Instead of thinking we are too much, let’s say we are just enough.

I hope that this post can resonate with you. I know all these things I shared really hit home for me. I know what it’s like to question yourself constantly, and worry how you look or how you come off to others. And I’m just getting so tired of it. I am who I am. I’m a kind person, but I’m not perfect. I have moments where my enthusiasm or my reactions may be TOO MUCH for you. If you don’t like it, that’s ok. We don’t have to be best friends. Life is full of people you are going to have to deal with, that you may not like or may not see eye to eye with. You may not get along with everyone. Just be yourself and love the skin you’re in. It’s not easy. I know. Society has taught us that by engraining standards into our brains. But fuck them, there is only one you. Own it, because no one else, ever can. 😉

Do you ever feel like you are too much?

Honey, you are just enough.

A Love Poem from the Faceless Woman to the Faceless Man

images9JL3C476

I often wonder if you’re ever thinking about me.

Do you wonder what color my eyes are?

If I’m close to my family?

How I take my coffee?

If I drink coffee at all?

I wonder if you spend your days looking, searching, waiting, praying for us to meet.

For me to trust you with all my dreams.

To have someone always on your side to battle your doubts.

To cuddle on the couch with a glass of beer or wine.

Do you get glimpses of our future?

How many kids we have?

If we live in a big house?

City or country?

Writing our love story in your mind.

Proposal story and our wedding day.

Sometimes it’s so much to bare, isn’t it?

This unknown person you promise to spend your life with.

“I love you and I haven’t even met you yet.”

Have you ever thought that?

So much love to give.

We worry.

Time lines ahead of us.

Clocks ticking.

Loudly at times.

Birthdays coming in like a Warning Sign.

Friends?

Married.

Kids.

And you feel like your failing.

Sometimes that “happy ending” feels so far away.

Like it’ll never happen.

And in that moment, I hope you feel me right there next to you.

Even if I’m miles and miles away,

or not far at all.

Either way, two souls.

Time will come.

And we’ll one day call each other home.

See you soon, love.

From the Faceless Woman, to the Faceless Man.

Fun Fact: Just as I finished writing this poem, Justin Timberlake’s song “Soulmate” came on my “Magic” titled Spotify playlist. Hmmm? Universe, I see you. 😉

A little thing called fear

tumblr_n12bccbpLm1rrrq1yo1_400[1]

Fear;

a mind playing game,

to conquer my days,

in it’s selfish ways.

When clouds loom,

threatening to rain down on me.

I look above to the one who holds the key.

The one who shelters me from the storm inside my mind.

Who never lets me go.

The god that my heart calls home.

Thank you for forgiving my wandering soul.

Fangirl Report: MAN OF THE WOODS Concert Review & Fashion Update

Back during #BLOGTOBER I did a post titled Fall Fashion: Concert Style where I showed my outfit inspiration for Justin Timberlake’s MAN OF THE WOODS tour.

album artwork

I was supposed to see him, back in October but he had to reschedule due to bruised vocal chords. So I just went recently on January 31st. Which just so happened to be Justin’s 38th Birthday so that was a fun treat! Not only did we get an amazing show, but we got to spend his birthday with him. This time we got to sing to him for a change. 😉

My concert morning prep…

My best friend and I got there a little before the opening act ended so we got to hear him a bit. His name is Franceso Yates, and he was definitely good vibes. Not to mention his curls are cool and he was rocking this cool silver sparkly bomber jacket. 3 years ago he lent his vocals to SUGAR (2015), yes ya’ll probably know Suga Suga by Baby Bash and Frankie J (2003) but Yates makes it work too! His voice is damn good!

Can’t Stop The Feeling

I felt like this concert has been quite a long time coming. In fact we just passed the year mark on of when MAN OF THE WOODS was released and when Justin performed the Superbowl Half time show. I had wanted to see JT a while back when he was first in the U.S., but I just couldn’t swing the date, and so when he came back I was on a mission to get tickets. So my best friend and I got t-shirts, I had my outfit all ready, and my nails strategically painted to match his album cover colors (as you can see in the Concert Style Blogtober post). But then it was rescheduled for January, so it was another 3 months added to the waiting game. Needless to say, because of all the holiday craziness, it went by quick. Of course the date landed on the COLDEST day of the year, my winter coat’s zipper broke just before I left the house, (so I had to wear a less warm coat but the one I actually bought for the concert to match my outfit lol) and my best friend was battling the start of a cold and her purse strap broke coming out of the Uber on the way into MSG. So we fought some stupid little inconveniences along the way, but it was COMPLETELY worth it! #CHEERSTOINSANLEYEXPENSIVEUBERSANDCABS It felt so good to be there in that arena with him. It’s been a while. It felt like it was all meant to be. I love you JT, you were worth the wait!

JUSTIN WAS INCREDIBLE! His talent never ceases to amaze me. He came back from that vocal rest like a boss. He can still sing, dance, and own any stage! And he is extremely good at making it so that he can work the entire stage and say hi to all sides. Our seats were pretty good, probably the closest, I’ve seen him so far. Although for his stadium tour with Jay Z, we had really good seats too! One of these days I hope to meet him, maybe even swing some VIP tickets, but I just can’t fathom those prices. Besides I like the option of sitting occasionally! Lol. #GRANNY #BIGPURSEDONTCARE

Justin did all his usual hits, but played a good amount of his new stuff too. It’s cool how his songs are so different live, like you feel every instrument. I love how he did his work on the NI Maschine for “Say Something,” and he just kind of like created this whole unique sound. It was really cool to see.

IMG_20190201_124852_825

The whole show was visually stunning. The fog rolling in, the grass coming up during certain scenes to add that woodsy feel. The lights, the screens that projected Justin for all to see, but at  times told a story through it’s stunning rain visuals during “Cry Me A River,” and trees and the sun shining during his Man Of The Woods songs. It was all so right.

20190131_220756

There were so many highlights, so many moments where he joked with the crowd, so many great live versions of songs that never get old. That clap and sing along in Mirrors, never gets old. And Can’t Stop The Feeling was so amazing live and such a great, feel good song to end on. However, I think if I HAD to pick, my highlight had to be when he sang “Until the End of Time.” There was a campfire set up. A real fire pit, with wooden seats around it, as his dancers re-enacted a campfire scene as he played the soft sweet song. This song is one of my favorites live, because this is the cell phone song. The lights sway back and forth, and you try to hit his notes in the sing along part of the song. Such a moment.

20190131_230003

The only downside was that I know I had seen an earlier version of a setlist that included “Let The Groove Get In” and “Flannel.” Two of which are my favorites. So I was a little bummed when he didn’t play them. “Soulmate” would have been cool, that song has become a favorite of mine too! But we did have a whole Birthday sing a long, so they probably had to take out a few songs to allow the time for that. I thought his Birthday show would have been like crazy! Like maybe a special guest, or something. I also thought he would do the whole fake out end and then come back out, but he didn’t. I’m so used to that! Lol. But when the lights come on you know it’s over. I guess I just wasn’t ready to leave.

You know what else I noticed, he didn’t have many breaks. He didn’t worry about changing outfits constantly either. He made a few changes, but they were super quick and kept in theme with his laid back woodsy vibe. He is the man of the woods, is he not? He didn’t talk too much with the crowd like I’ve seen him do in the past, didn’t really chat about the songs or give some heart felt speech about what the slow jams were about or why he wrote them. He used to do this a while back. Instead he let the music talk. Which I understood. He has 5 studio albums under his belt and only about a 2 hour slot to perform! He can’t do EVERYTHING! Even so, he is a true talent. A class act. He is so good. When I got home I mentioned how it’s a pain to go to a concert on a week day, and my mom said to me, “well this is it, right? I mean you can’t keep going to his concerts.”  And I said, “Um, what? Yes I can! And I will.”  I may be getting older, he may be getting older, but as he said before he took his shot before he performed “Drink You Away,” he “Ain’t done yet!” And as long as he’s singing, I’ll keep listening! Concerts can be transcendent. They can be such amazing experiences, especially when you are that much of a fan of the artist. Especially when you get to go with your best friend. I’ve grown up listening to Justin. So no, I’m not quitting  now. Looking out at that audience it was an incredible mix of men, women, of all ages, and even some little kids. I was proud to see how far he’s come and how many generations his music has touched. He may not have chatted constantly but he was very adorable when he thanked us for spending his birthday with him, “best birthday ever,” he said just before leaving the stage. So what it all comes down to, is that the concert was cool, classic, and absolutely amazing and we got to spend his Birthday with him, and that’s the coolest thing ever. Happy Birthday JT!

What I Wore:

My Target JT T-shirt- Black tank underneath

^ tried to link, but I don’t see it available anymore 😦

A Flannel because well the song and the woods! lol

Jeans

Tan Boots

I had on pretty simple jewelry- a brown snakeskin cuff, two gold thin rings, big gold hoops, a black tattoo choker, and two gold necklaces for a layered effect. I also painted my nails a natural brown from Essie called- “Clothing Optional.”

20190205_20181320190205_20191520190205_201918

I basically went for a chill, laid back, woodsy/90’s vibe. LOL. My makeup was subtle warm tans and blush tones, and my hair I kept simple in a low bun and some curls to frame my face.

20190131_212208 Flannel by JT

Right behind my left pocket
That is where you’ll feel my soul
It’s been with me many winters
It will keep you warm
Ooh, here’s my flannel
The character’s in the way you wear it (the way you wear it)
It takes your shape while you keep it on (all you gotta do is keep it on)
May we live for many winters
Keepin’ each other warm
And may we live for many winters
Keepin’ each other warm

Listen to the full song HERE

And yes I did treat myself to some concert souvenirs- a tee and a concert program. They were selling the t-shirt I couldn’t find anymore on his merch store website, so I was excited. At first I wasn’t going to buy anything because between the ticket and the cabs,  I was already spending so much $$$! But then I realized I have a concert tee from every show I’ve seen of his. And I’m a major graphic tee wearing girl, so I had to. So I picked this one (it has another image of him and man of the woods written on the back, with all the tour locations.) And I splurged on a program too, because I have never bought one of his programs before. So I figured I should own at least one. I mean I am a self- proclaimed JT fan girl, right? Hey I don’t do this often, you got to live a little, right? 😉 The t-shirt was $40. The program was $25, in case any other fangirls or boys are wondering about prices!

Well there you have it, another JT Fangirl report from yours truly.

Until next time.

*All images are my own except JT’s album art picture at the beginning of the post.*

Fly like a Butterfly

3e442dea084db02ce4ef9b7f6d7ba4cf--blue-butterfly-butterfly-wings[1]

A Blue Butterfly symbolizes joy, beauty, luck and is a wish granter. A Purple Butterfly
implies a divine intervention.

In her magic she flutters stumbling along

gracing the grass blades

circling the sunflowers in the breeze

wings of rich blues and purples flapping

darting sweet droplets of crystal clear rain

the sun shining brightly down on the field

the sun shower welcoming the questions you ask

soaring high into the sky

carefree

one with the elements

with nature

with vibes

Freedom

Peace

Dreams becoming clear

Joy

Beauty

Luck

Divinity

Grant her wishes

The butterfly she is

the magic she creates

it’s hers and hers alone

No Judgements wanted

Let her be

She’s trying to find her way

But it’s a struggle against the wind

Wings weaken

But that color, well honey, it’s more vibrant than ever

Fly butterfly

fly

Everything will be alright

What is your Spirit Animal?

What is a spirit animal?

Spirit animals are typically associated with traditional as well as modern Western shamanic practices. During initiations or shamanic journeys, the shaman would find one or several animals that she or another person is associated with. Traditionally, the spirit animal is used for guidance.

Think of your spirit animal as a guardian spirit or spirit guide. It can play the role of protector and provides guidance. It’s like a “personal guide or protector” that has a personal affinity with the person it’s associated with.- info via spirit animal info

Owl Spirit Guide by Katherine Kaggs

However some key Owl highlights include:

*Deep connection with wisdom and intuitive knowledge.

*It’s presence announces change/transformation.

I would have to say in some ways I feel like this is a good fit for me. But I don’t think that I will live my life by the ways of the owl all the time. However, I do think it’s fun to see how animals and their energies can affect us, guide or inspire us. I’ve always been interested in the Native American culture so maybe my interest in spirit animals stems from that. This world is quite large, we can be one with a religion, with the earth, with the universe. There are so many energies that circle around us. And the hippie in me, thinks that’s super cool. I’m interested in learning.

So what’s your Spirit Animal?

Do you find that it fits you?

Eye Contact

4471_1166464442977_2172516_n

So I’ve been hitting a wall, when it comes to writing blog content lately. I start a few drafts and then I get uninspired to finish, and nothing is feeling good enough to post. I want to keep to a 2 times a week posting schedule, so I turned to my 400 Writing Prompts Book, for some help. I thought this one was pretty good.

Do you think the eyes are a window to a person’s soul?

What does eye contact mean to you?

It’s funny I wrote a poem called Sunglasses back in 2013 when I started this blog, and it touches upon this topic a little.

I do think in some way, the eyes are the windows to a person’s soul. I think they are going to tell you how a person feels. If they are scared, confused, loving, or whatever emotion they may be feeling, it’s all there. I notice that for me personally, I value eye contact. If someone isn’t looking at me while I’m talking I feel it’s like they aren’t listening to what I’m saying. Although that being said, I know I’m guilty of doing this myself at times. Life happens around us, and distractions are constant. However, I also notice that sometimes eye contact can be difficult for me. During a difficult conversation, during an awkward moment when you don’t know your place in a situation or what to say. Or simply, when your brain needs to find the right words. I find that I kind of look off trying to come up with a phrase. I also have issues with eye contact when it comes to men- usually men I feel don’t know me well. I feel like they are instantly judging me. Sometimes, I feel this way while talking to women too, but it’s not that often. I believe in women’s empowerment. I believe in feminism and supporting each other. And I feel like women just get where each other are coming from. We all face those same weird life circumstances. We are sisters. It’s a safe space. But with men, especially with how they think differently they don’t always understand where we’re coming from. I often worry what they think about me. Are they judging me, judging how I look,  or what I’m doing. But that’s a whole other conversation that includes feelings of  fear, inferiority, nerves, anxiety, insecurity, feminism, and wanting to find a man that actually wants to listen to what I have to say. I feel like if I don’t look directly at them, then they don’t get to see those inner thoughts floating around in my massively chaotic mind. They just will think, I’m unphased./busy or even worse, they’ll think I’m being rude. But that’s ok, because it’s better than the truth. Either way it’s not super great, but I find myself doing it all. the. time. It’s unfortunate because I know that it can come off as merely uninterested and that kind of sucks. #PROBABLYWHYIMSINGLE HAHAHA. Avoiding male eye contact, (referring to male strangers/acquaintances not men I actually know or am related to) is something I’ve always done. I don’t know. I have to be aware of that, and check it. But I guess in some way, I’m still that shy girl that keeps to herself or her close inner circle. I’ve conquered many awkward moments in my life and I’m really good at filling awkward silence, and conversation. But sometimes I just feel like with certain people, I’m not myself. Or if I am myself, it doesn’t match up with them.  Well there you go, that’s some real deal truth for you. However, sometimes eyes are just eyes. And we don’t have to over think every glance or conversation. Do you know how many times I’ve dazed off and then realized the person across from me probably thought I was starring them down. Resting bitch eyes, are a thing too, I guess. So you never really know what someone is really thinking while they are looking/not looking at you. So what’s your take…

How do you feel about eye contact?

Do you find it easy as pie or do you view it as something

deeper like a window leading to your soul?
