*THE NEXT MORNING*

Kris walks back into Noel’s hospital room carrying two cups of herbal tea, only to find her bed empty. He looks around nervously, and then he hears the toilet flush and the water running.

He lets out a sigh of relief.

Noel comes out fully dressed in actual clothes.

“Hi,” she says, her smile bright and full.

“Look at you, up and about, I was literally gone for 5 minutes and you were sound asleep.”

Noel laughs, “I woke up and saw that bag sitting there of stuff Holly brought for us, and I figured I’d take the opportunity to make myself look a little more presentable. It feels so good to be in actual clothes, even if they’re just sweats.”

“Ah, you always look beautiful,” he says coming over to her and placing a sweet little kiss on her lips, as he hands her the cup of tea.

“Well thank you,” she smiles brightly up at him, kissing him a second time as he smiles at her.

“Were you okay? I could have helped you,” he says asking as he tries to lead her back to her bed.

“I was fine, really. And I feel like I needed to move around, I’ve been in that bed for like two days!” she says laughing. “In fact you know what I would love?”

“What’s that?” Kris asks smirking at his smiling wife.

“I would love to take a walk around the hall,” she says smiling through clenched teeth knowing he’s not going to approve her request.

“Uh, baby…I don’t know…” Kris says uncertainly.

“Come on please…I need to get out of this room. I swear the walls are closing in Kris.”

He laughs, “Ok. ok,  let me go check with Dr. King and if she says yes then…”

Dr. King comes walking in.

“Perfect timing,” Noel says smiling and pointing.

“Ask me what?” Dr. King says with a smile coming over to them.

“My wife here, wants to go for a walk around the hall, is that allowed?”

Noel smiles, hopefully.

“Yes, that would be a very good idea, you’ve had a few days rest to heal, and I think walking could do you some good. Go, I’ll stop by again later.”

“Ha!” Noel says throwing up her finger and pointing at Kris. “See!”

“Yea, yea, ok, let’s go, gloater,” he says taking Noel’s hand.

“I’m not a gloater,” she says protesting as she intertwines her fingers through this.

Dr. King laughs as she walks out.

“Oh yes, you are a big gloater,” he says smirking at her as they walk out of the room hand in hand.

“So…where do we live?”

“We have a house in Brooklyn.”

“Brooklyn, cool,” she says nodding.

“Yea, we just work here in the city-Manhattan.”

“What do you do?” she asks.

“I’m an accountant.”

“Really? I’m surprised.”

“Why?” he says looking at her with a laugh.

“I don’t know, I just got the sense that you work with your hands in some way, like with cars or plumbing or contracting or something.”

“What made you think that?”

“Your hands,” she says pulling his hand up and showing his palm. “They’re very manly- and rugged, like you work with them a lot,” she says laughing.

“Well, I’m kind of a handy I guess you could say. I like to repair things myself, cars, leaky pipes, I used to work with my dad in his auto body shop.”

“So what happened?”

“My dad passed when I was in high school,”

“Oh I’m so sorry, I didn’t know.” Noel says feeling bad for bringing it up.

“It’s ok, I know. It took me a long time to just even walk into that shop after that. Never mind that I wasn’t old enough to run a business myself. So an uncle of mine took it over. And then rent just got expensive and they had to sell the place before I graduated college.”

“So why not just open your own shop one day?”

“I’ve thought about it, but accounting is stable, and I’m good at it, it just felt sensible.”

“Hmm, I guess I can understand that. Are you happy, with the decision you made?”

“It led me to you.”

“What?” she says smiling, confused.

“The party we met at was your best friend Rebecca’s birthday party.”

“Right I remember you saying that…”

“Well I only know Rebecca through her husband Griffin. He does Advertising for the same company I work for. So back when Griffin and Rebecca were dating, I got invited to her party, you got invited to her party and the rest is history.”

“Huh? I like the way you think.”

“Yea. That was just my round about cuter way of saying, I may not love my job, but I love you,” he says smiling at her as their eyes lock.

Noel pulls him to her as she kisses him, his hands finding her waist.

Holly walks through the hospital doors to find the two lovebirds.

She smiles and walks over to them.

“Well, well, I’m guessing, it’s been a good morning!” she says smiling brightly as the two part from each other.

Noel’s cheeks blush slightly as she looks away with a nervous laugh, Kris laughs.

“Yes it has,” he says.

“How are you feeling? You look fabulous.” she says smiling, as she gives her sister and brother in law each a hug.

“I feel great, I’m ready to go home.”

“Are they releasing you?” Holly says happily.

“We don’t know just yet, Dr. King has to give us an update.”

“Oh ok, well can I get you anything, food? coffee?”

“Um, I would love to eat anything other than hospital food.”

“I’m on it,” she says laughing “And I will bring you something back too,” she says patting Kris on the back as she walks away.

Jack walks into the hospital just as Holly walks out, they smile politely at each other as Jack looks back after her instinctively.

“Hey Jack,” Kris says reaching for his hand.

“Hey man,” he shakes Kris’ hand as he smiles brightly at Noel.

“Hey you, glad to see your doing ok? This guy was a mess,” he says pointing to Kris.

Kris rolls his eyes, as Noel laughs and hugs him.

“So, baby… this is Jack, my co-worker and friend, he was the one that drove me here to the hospital that day.”

“Oh hi, thank you so much, nice to meet you,” she says smiling and then frowning quickly after, “And now I realize how stupid I sound, because obviously we’ve met before, I’m sorry.” Kris wraps his arms around her waist in an attempt to comfort her.

“Hey, no worries, I’m just glad your ok.”

“Thank you,” she says nodding.

“So I don’t wanna be an overbearing guest, I just wanted to stop by and see how you guys were doing.”

“Thanks man,” Kris says, “I’ll touch base with you later.”

“If you can’t no worries, I understand, see you guys.” he says smiling and waving as he exits.

“He seems nice and from what you’ve said about Griffin, it seems like you’ve made some good friends at your job.”

“Yea can’t argue with that.”

Noel smiles, Kris takes her hand as they continue to walk.

“So what do I do? I just realized I never even asked you that?”

“You are an interior designer, you have your own little shop in SoHo.”

“Really?” she says smiling.

“Yea. It does really well. You really know what your doing. You have this incredible eye for detail and fashion.”

“That is kind of awesome,” Noel says smiling.

“Yea, you really love it.” he says smiling

“So what happened to your mom?”

“She passed away a few years after I was born, so my dad basically raised me as a single parent.”

“Oh my gosh, so I guess we both lost our parents far too soon in life.”

“Yea that’s for sure. Are you kind of getting the reason why I’m so crazy when it comes to you and your health and safety.”

“Yea I’m getting that.”

“I don’t ever wanna lose you, the way I lost them. Because I love them their my parents they shaped who I am, they made me, and they kind of got stuck with me. But you, you made a choice to be with me, you said yes to forever just because you wanted to. You know as much as I believe in destiny and fate, and the fact that we were both put at the same party at the same time, you didn’t have to pick me, you could have had any other guy you wanted, but you chose me.”

“And what makes you think I won’t keep choosing you?” Noel says as they make their way back into her hospital room.

“I guess sometimes I just worry that what we have is too good to be true. I mean take this accident for instance. We just got married. I’m talking like 3 weeks ago, we didn’t even have our honeymoon yet, and Christmas is a literally days away, and then this happens. I just worry that sometimes it won’t last. Because everyone in my life up until now has left me.”

“Unintentionally though Kris, I mean I get that your worried. Ok, but do you honestly think that if your mom or your dad were able to choose to be here with you that they wouldn’t? Come on, I know that this isn’t you talking.”

“How could you know that,” he says sullenly as he looks at her with tears in his eyes.

“Because Holly told me that the only reason I was able to get through my parent’s death was because of you. She said I met you and you brought me back to life again. How can this cynical version of you do that.”

“I guess we’re both not exactly who we used to be,” he says looking down.

“If your so scared of losing me, why do you keep on pushing me away? I thought we were rounding some kind of corner. Do you want me to hate you? Is that it?”

“Of course not.” he says looking up at her.

“Good, because I love you.”

Kris looks at her, stunned.

“I know it doesn’t make sense right now, but I do, I love you,” she says her voice raising.

Kris walks over to her swiftly and kisses her passionately.

Dr. King knocks on the door, as the two part ways.

“Hello, it seems I have the worse possible timing,” she says laughing.

“That’s ok,” Noel says smiling.

“So I got the results back from the tests we’ve been running, and everything looks great.”

“Really?” Noel asks excitedly.

“Yes. A’s across the board. I mean I wouldn’t let you run a marathon right now. But your incision is healing nicely, your concussion is healing quicker than we ‘ve ever seen, your up and doing things for yourself, your blood work is good, your reflexes are good. Your recovery is quite outstanding.”

“That’s fantastic,” Noel says excitedly. “So can I go home?”

“I don’t see why not.”

“Ah!” Noel says happily as she hugs Kris tightly as he nervously hugs her back.

Noel and Kris sit together on her hospital bed as Kris tells her the stories that accompany the many photos in her scrapbook.

“So, I just came up to you and kissed you?” she says laughing.

“Yea pretty much, you said you thought I was cute and wanted to know what it’d be like,” he says laughing.

“Oh my gosh! Wow. Did you like it? Or were you totally weirded out?”

“Are you kidding me? I thought it was sexy as hell.”

Noel covers her face and starts laughing.

Kris laughs and shakes his head, “she’s still my girl,” he thinks.

Noel notices, “so are we one of those affectionate couples that make people sick or…” she says trailing off kind of hoping that was exactly the case.

“Um…I guess…” Kris says puzzled.

“Hmm, what does that mean?” Noel says laughing and looking over with wide eyes.

“We’re very affectionate normally, like in our own home we’re basically all over each other,” (he says laughing).

“Oh?” Noel smiles as she raises her eyebrows.

“But with PDA, we’re a little more reserved.”

“Ah, I guess I can understand that…”

Kris smiles at her.

“But wait one second, I have a question.”

“Ask away,” he says smiling as she slides her hand onto his, intertwining their fingers.

He looks down and smiles.

“If I’m so reserved, why was I able to rock that red little lacey number without a problem.”

“It’s not that it’s problematic for you, it’s just that you tend to blush easily,” he says laughing.

“Ah, so in other words, I just like when it’s a secret between you and me?” Noel says her head lifting up from his shoulders as her brown eyes sparkle up at him.

“Yea that sounds about right,” Kris says smirking at her, their lips close.

Noel looks up at Kris, pressing her lips against his, cupping his neck with her hand as she pulls him closer to her.

Kris kisses her back for a beat and then pulls away.

“Is everything ok?” she asks confused.

“Yea, of course.” he says hopping off of the bed as Noel’s brow furrows. “I just remembered I promised I’d call our best friends to update them about you,” he says with a nervous little laugh.

“Oh, okay,” she says feeling suddenly uncomfortable for kissing him.

“I’ll be right back,” Kris says kissing her left hand right near her sparkling rings, quickly before exiting the room.

Noel looks up at the ceiling in frustration and confusion as she reaches for her purse.

Kris rushes off to the side taking out his phone, he dials a familiar number.

“Hello?” a young brunette answers quickly in a panic as she sits impatiently in an airport, simultaneously tapping a young man on the shoulder sitting beside her.

“Hey Rebecca,” Kris says sullenly.

“Kris! Oh thank god! We’ve been trying to get through to you since we got your message! Griffin and I have been stuck at the airport for a day, and our phones have been all messed up! How’s Noel? I’ve been worried sick.”

“She’s ok, she’s doing much better. The doctor says her recovery is going nicely”

“Oh thank god!” Rebecca says grabbing her chest in relief.

Griffin looks on anxiously, taking Rebecca’s hand.

“She’s okay” she mouths to him, as Griffin sighs in relief.

“So everything went well with the surgery?”

“Yes, it was less evasive than they thought would was great and she is feeling good, she’s just having some trouble remembering things.”

“What do you mean, she doesn’t remember anything?”

Griffins eyes go wide.

“She doesn’t remember anything. Not me, not the fact that I’m her husband, not Holly, or her parent’s death…nothing.”

“Oh my gosh, Kris that’s terrible. I’m sorry, that’s heart breaking.”

“You would think so, but she’s been so great, she wants to know everything, she’s completely optimistic, but I-“

“You’re going through a lot right now, it’s hard, I know,” she says her voice softening as she hears the tears building up in his throat.

“Yea,” Kris says shoving his hand in his pocket as he leans against the hallway wall, mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted.

“Hey Kris, do you wanna talk to Griffin?”

“If you don’t mind…” he says with a small chuckle.

Griffin takes the phone, “Hey buddy,” he says gesturing to Rebecca that he’s going to step to the side, she nods as he places a kiss on her cheek.

“Hey man…”

“I’m so sorry dude, I can’t believe all this,” Griffin says hearing his friend’s voice crack.

“I don’t know what to do man, I love her so much, you know how much I love my wife.”

“I know man.”

“But I was in no way prepared for something like this. I know she’s trying and I know it could be worse, she could not want anything to do with me. I mean to her I’m a complete stranger… but she’s being completely amazing, she’s still kissing me and holding my hand,”

“Well that’s a good thing right?”

“Yea, but I know she doesn’t remember me. And I just feel like maybe she’s just doing those things to make it easier on me.”

“Well I mean like you just said, she doesn’t know you right? So if she really didn’t want to do something she wouldn’t. I mean so the way I see it, is she’s embracing the fact that your her husband and she’s doing her best to get back to the life she knows she used to love.”

“I love her so much, I do. But I am petrified that I’m going to do or say something that’s going to freak her out. And then I’ll lose her for good.”

“What do the doctors say? Do they think she’s forcing herself to remember too much too quick?”

“I don’t think so, I mean everything has been quite a blur since last night.”

“I can imagine, man, but look I think you just need to talk to her, ok, tell her your concerns. Even if she is trying to do it for you, even that says something right. She cares.”

Meanwhile back in her hospital room, Noel sits going through her cellphone. She looks at pictures of her old life, as her eyes begin to fill with tears.

She dials the number for Holly.

“Hey you!” Holly answers excitedly as she shuffles through her keys trying to open her door.

“Hey,” Noel answers her sadness evident.

“Oh no, what’s wrong, love?” Holly says walking into her apartment and flipping the light on.

“I don’t know. I just feel like somethings going on with Kris and he won’t tell me. And I just feel like he doesn’t want anything to do with me.”

“Oh sweetheart, you are going insane, I think,” she says laughing

“Why are you laughing?” Noel says in between sobs.

“Kris Thornwood is obsessed with his wife, anyone you ask would say the same. The minute you kissed him at that party he was a goner. Ok? There is no way anything that your saying is true.”

“Yea Kris Thornwood may be obsessed with his wife, but I am NOT his wife. At least that’s what I feel like he’s thinking.”

Kris starts to come down the hall, and he over hears Noel’s voice, and ducks back to the side, listening in.

“Stop it! Yes you are his wife.”

“No, I’m not. I can’t remember anything. And that sucks. Ok I get it, he’s struggling with the fact that I’m not the woman he fell in love with. But I’m trying here, and I just feel like maybe I’m just not who he wants me to be. I wish he would just talk to me, I mean I can’t get better without him.”

Kris walks in his eyes full of tears.

Noel turns and notices, tears streaming down her face.

“Holly…I’m gonna have to call you back,” she says hanging up. “I’m so sorry,” Noel says looking at him.

“No. I um…I’m so sorry,” he says walking over to her.

“I just didn’t know what else to do…” she says shrugging, her tears falling more freely.

“Stop crying, stop.” he says cupping her face and wiping her tears away with his thumbs. “You are exactly the woman I fell in love with, you are the woman I love with all my heart. Memory or not. I do, I love you so much. I need you to know that.”

Noel smiles in between sad and happy tears.

“I’m so sorry that I’ve been so distant. I just, I’m scared.”

“Scared…of what?” Noel says confused.

“When the doctor called me to tell me you were in an accident, I’m pretty sure I stopped breathing. It was the single most terrifying moment of my life. You are my everything and when I thought I was going to lose you, I kind of lost it. So when I heard you were going to be ok, it was like every prayer I ever made was answered. And I was so happy, but when you said you didn’t remember anything, I started to worry that what if I pushed you too hard, too quick and you ended up hating me or even worse what if I put your health at risk.”

“But Kris, look at me, I’m fine.”

“I just worry. My greatest fear in life, is losing you.”

Noel softens, as she looks at him with kind eyes.

“Come here,” she says holding out her arms.

Kris looks away hesitantly.

“Come here,” she says pulling his hands toward her as she pulls him into a hug. “I may not remember anything right now. But I can already tell how in love we are. And I want that back. I know my heart knows you, I just need some time for my mind to get there again. I like hearing about our life and seeing pictures, I like being with you, I love kissing you.” she says smiling up at him, as he looks at her with a smirk. “I know that I can fall in love with you, in no time. I don’t want you to apologize for touching me, or to second guess talking to me. I’m your wife. I need you to talk to me. Because I am committed to my recovery and I’m even more committed to you and getting our life back.”

“God I love you,” he says pulling her into a kiss.

BLOGMAS -Day 17- My Perfect Winter Day

As we get closer to Christmas, I’m noticing it’s been harder to get these posts up everyday in a timely manner. Hence the last few have been posted later at night just in the nick of time.

But we have one week left, and I am determined to make it to December 25!

lights blogmas edit

So here we go…

I’ve been super stressed…everything is all happening at once and it’s taking over my festive mood. Did I mention I HATE Christmas shopping! I hate crowds, I hate having to sweat in these stores because the heat is blasting, and I hate how everything is so freaking expensive no matter where you go. Ordering online is just as bad!

I feel like this tends to happen every year. I try to start early but a million other things pop up and I can’t or i just don’t have any luck. And it becomes this massive scanner hunt to find gifts. I stress myself out and I end up being miserable.

But this year feels a little bit more difficult. I have a lot going on from all angles of my life and although most of them are good things, when you throw a holiday in the mist of everything, it’s a recipe for some serious anxiety for me. And I’m someone who loves to be festive, who loves to dress according to theme, who loves to watch Christmas movies and decorate while listening to Christmas songs and sipping on hot chocolate. And yet I haven’t done much of anything. Between all the hustle and bustle, it saddens me that life swirls by us and we never actually get to enjoy the season or the moments we’re in.

I just wish things could be different…

So in a perfect world…here is what my perfect winter day would look like…

Wake up early without the sound of an alarm

Make a delicious Christmas flavored tea

Make a festive breakfast

Work on a blog post… of course 🙂

Take a nice long shower and throw on some comfy clothes and slipper booties

Tidy up

Create a festive atmosphere-play some Christmas music, plug in the Christmas tree, light a candle

Invite some friends over to watch some Christmas movies

Drink festive drinks/wine

Bake some sweet treats

Order in for dinner (easy peasy)

Play a game or two

And just chat with some good company

That would be perfect!

What’s your perfect day look like?

BLOGMAS -Day 14- “A Husband for Christmas” [Part 2] Short Story

Kris stumbles back, his hand falling from Noel’s face.

Noel searches his face for an explanation.

“I’m sorry. I just-I’m very confused. Where am I? Am I supposed to know you?”

Kris feels his heart start to beat faster, the room begins spinning.

“Yes. I um…I’m your husband.”

Noel’s eyes widen.

“My…my husband?”

Kris closes his eyes tightly, inhaling deeply, giving himself a beat to steady his spinning sight.

Opening his eyes again his vision clears a bit and focuses on Noel’s confused expression. Kris exhales before answering.

“Yes. I’m Kris. Thornwood. And I’m your husband.”

Noel looks around the room, nervously.

“See…” he says pointing to her hospital bracelet that reads Noel Thornwood.

Noel looks and the shock is still unwavering.

“You don’t… remember marrying me?” he asks his heart breaking.

“No…I’m sorry…I don’t even know what’s going on. But I do know that my head is pounding,” she says bringing her hands to her temple.

“You were in an accident. The doctors said you suffered some head injuries and internal bleeding.”

“Oh my god,” Noel says still hazy.

Dr. King walks in, “Hello, Welcome back Mrs. Thornwood, how are we feeling?” she says walking over to the bed where Noel lies in confusion and frustration.

“She’s having trouble remembering some things,” Kris says trying to remain calm.

“Oh well that’s to be expected, you do have a concussion,” Dr. King says looking at Noel.

“She’s having trouble remembering me,” Kris says looking over at the doctor with sad eyes.

Dr. King freezes and looks at Kris.

“Is that true?” She asks looking at Noel again, as she takes out a small flash light, and shines it into Noel’s eyes, waving her index finger in front of her, and Noel’s eyes follow.

“Yes. I don’t remember him, or being married, or even the accident that put me here. I can’t even tell you what I did yesterday,” she says nervously.

“Ok. Well that can happen sometimes with concussions, and due to the accident, you have a mild one, but memory loss can still be a side effect. When you were first brought in, we didn’t know what we were dealing with or how severe your injuries were. We were worried you’d have to have surgery but thankfully after a few tests, there was no bleeding or swelling in the brain. But you suffered blunt trauma, and in turn had abdominal internal bleeding due to the impact of the other car, you must have been thrown around a bit. We had to go in and stop the bleeding before it got worse. The bleeding was from your spleen, but we were able to repair it.”

“Oh my goodness,” Noel says confused and worried.

“She’s going to be okay though, right doctor?” Kris asks worry evident in his voice and on his face.

“Yes, she’s going to be just fine.” Dr. King says smiling.

“But what about my memory?” Noel says her nerves building up.

“You just suffered a traumatic experience, it’s normal for you to be a little foggy right now. There’s no reason to be alarmed.”

“So I should get my memory back soon?”

“Just give yourself some time, you need to rest,” she says looking over at Kris.

“Doctor King, she was complaining about a headache. Is there anything you can give her?”

“Of course, I will have the nurse come in and give you some Tylenol.”

“Thank you Doctor,” Kris says.

“I’ll give you two a minute,” she says exiting the room.

Kris looks over at Noel, he instinctively reaches for her hand.

Noel flinches slightly.

Kris pulls his hand away.

“I’m sorry, it’s out of habit I guess. I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.”

“No, that’s ok.” Noel says looking away sheepishly.

Kris looks around not knowing what to do, or how to act.

Just then the nurse comes in.

“Hello, My name is Fiona and I will be your nurse tonight, I have some Tylenol to help you out with that headache, ok?”

Noel nods.

“I’m just going to step out for a minute,” Kris says rushing out of the room. Noel notices and immediately feels bad.

Jack springs up quickly, “Hey how is she?”

“She doesn’t remember me.”

“What?” Jack says taken back.

Kris starts to hyperventilate, as he leans against the wall, gasping for air.

“She doesn’t…remember me.” he says tears streaming down his face.

Jack catches his friend, before he falls, as they slide to the floor.

The hospital doors open and a young brunette woman rushes in.

She spots them, and she runs over.

“Kris!”

Kris looks and springs up pulling her into a hug, “Holly. Thank god your here. I’m so sorry I had to text you like that. I just didn’t have any details and I was just trying to get to her as fast as I could.”

“No stop it, don’t worry. I’m glad you told me. Of course I’m here. Where is she? Is she ok?”

Kris pulls away and looks at her, “She’s ok, but she doesn’t remember anything.”

“What do you mean… she doesn’t remember the accident?”

“She doesn’t remember me.”

“Oh my god…Oh…my god,” she says pulling him into another hug, holding him tightly.

“She’s in there, if you wanna go see her, maybe she’ll remember you,” he says wiping at the tears as they fall.

“Ok. I’ll give it a shot,” she says looking at him with sympathetic, caring eyes. “Hey…we’re gonna get her through this though…she loves you so much, you know that.”

Kris nods, as Holly lets his hand go and walks into the hospital room.

“Knock, knock…” She says walking in.

Noel looks at her puzzled.

“Hi,” she says with a smile.

“Hello,” Noel says confused.

“I’m guessing my face doesn’t ring a bell either, huh?” she says with a slight smile.

“No, I’m so sorry.”

She smiles and takes out her cell phone and shows her a picture of the two of them as babies.

“I’m Holly, I’m your sister.”

“I have a sister?” Noel asks.

Holly nods.

“Any other siblings I should know about?” Noel says with a small laugh.

“Nope, just you and me.”

“What about our mom and dad?” Noel asks looking at Holly with expectation.

“We lost them a few years back. It was unexpected.”

“Oh that’s terrible,” Noel says sadly.

“Yea, it’s been pretty hard, but you met Kris and he kind of pulled you out of your rut and brought you back to life.”

“Kris as in my…”

“Husband? Yes.”

“I’m really married?” Noel asks with a smile in her voice.

“Oh yea,” Holly says smiling.

“Do you have any pictures of my wedding?”

“But of course… I was your maid of honor after all?” she says smiling and scrolling through her phone. “Here you go,” she says showing her a picture of she and Kris kissing.

“Wow. I look so happy,” Noel says smiling.

“Yea. Well you really love him.” Holly says smiling.

Noel looks at her.

“And just so you know, he loves you too…so much.”

Noel looks back at the picture, wishing she could just remember something.

Just outside, Jack sits on the floor trying to calm Kris down.

The nurse comes over to them, “Mr. Thornwood…”

Kris looks up, and stands up quickly.

“These are all your wife’s belongings,” she says handing him a clear bag.

“Thank you,” he says taking it.

Kris turns to Jack. “I’m just gonna take a minute. I’ll be right back.”

Jack nods. “I’ll be here, let me know if you need anything.”

“Thanks,” he says patting Jack on the back as a thank you.

Kris walks into the men’s room, setting the bag on the sink counter. He beings to sift through it. First he pulls out her red pumps, emerald green dress, and then her lacey red lingerie. Kris stops and stares at it, smiling, he whispers, “I knew she was wearing it,” remembering their conversation from earlier.

“Please tell me your wearing that sexy red lingerie I bought you?”
Noel gasps, Kris laughs.
“You better be alone right now,” she says.
“Baby I think I can actually hear you blushing,” he says with a chuckle.
“Shut up,” she says laughing.

Kris’ eyes begin to tear up again, he fights them back as he continues looking through the bag. Pulling out her purse, cellphone, and then her engagement ring and wedding band.

Kris stares at them,  holding them in his palm, they sparkle reflecting the light.

An image of Noel’s tearful yet smiling face pops into his mind as he remembers getting down on one knee.

“Baby… come back to me, ” he whispers.

Just then Kris hears a knock on the door.

He places the rings in his pocket, and grabs everything else, before opening the door.

“Hey,” Holly says smiling.

“Hey, any luck?” Kris asks stepping out.

“Nope, but she’s asking for you.”

Kris smiles faintly as he walks away toward Noel’s room.

“Hey,” he says walking in cautiously.

“Hi,” Noel says with a small smile noticing Kris’ tear stained cheeks.

“What’s that?” she says pointing to the bag in his hand.

“This is just all the stuff you came in with, the nurse just gave me it.”

“Oh…what’s in it?”

Kris walks over and hands the bag to his wife.

She begins to pull each item out.

“Well, that’s pretty sexy,” she says laughing as she pulls out the lacey red bra.

Kris laughs. “Yes, it is.”

“Where was I going exactly?” she says smiling.

“You were meeting me at my holiday party for work.”

“Wearing this?” she asks her eyebrows raising.

“It’s kind of a thing, I by you lingerie before every Christmas. And you wear it every year under some insanely hot dress at my holiday party. And then well…we…”

Noel smirks, crossing her arms, as she waits for him to finish.

“We?” she says smiling.

“We kind of have our own little celebration later that night, I rent a hotel room, we order room service, it’s like our own little sexy holiday tradition. I know it probably sounds silly…” he says looking away.

“No. It sounds fun.”

Kris looks up at her, their eyes locking, he smiles.

“I’m sorry we didn’t get to that, this year.”

“Hey the year’s not over yet,” he says.

Noel smiles, as her cheeks blush a pretty shade of pink.

“So how long have we been married?” Noel asks.

“We actually just got married a month ago.”

“Oh…wow…so we’re newly weds.”

“Yup…” he says pulling out her rings from his pocket and handing them to her.

“Wow, they’re gorgeous,” she says admiring them.

“You don’t have to wear them yet, if you don’t want to,” he says nervously.

“Don’t be silly, I would love to wear them,” she says smiling as she hands them back to him.

He looks at her confused.

Noel holds her hand out, waiting.

“Aren’t you going to put them on me?”

“Oh of course,” her says smiling as he slides the rings onto her red manicured finger.

Kris leans in and cupping her face, he places a kiss on her lips.

Although caught off guard, Noel doesn’t flinch this time.

Kris places his forehead against hers, looking into her eyes, he sighs, “I’m sorry, I just, I couldn’t help myself,” he says.

Noel smiles.

“I really do wish I could remember, I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Hey, I got you to fall in love with me once, I can do it again.”

Noel looks up at him, and pulls him in by his jacket, kissing him again.

Kris wraps his arms around her waist pulling her closer to him, as he kisses her. Noel falls into it as she circles her hands around his neck.

Dr. King walks in.

“Oh I’m sorry.”

Kris pulls away, as Noel blushes.

“Are we getting our memory back already?” she says smiling and walking over.

“Not just yet,” Noel says looking away with a laugh.

“Oh…”

“Hey if you woke up to this gorgeous guy saying he was your husband, would you question that?” Noel asks.

Kris looks at her, smirking.

Dr. King, smiles, “Well you have a good point and a sense of humor, that’s fantastic.”

Noel smiles.

“I just wanted to check on you and do some blood work and routine stuff. Check your reflexes, things like that.”

“Ok,” Noel says smiling.

“Dr. King how long do you have to keep her here?”

“Once I get all the results back from the follow up tests, and I’m able to give her the all clear, you’ll be able to take her home…I’m thinking in a day or two.”

“Really?” Kris says smiling, “that’s fantastic.”

Noel smiles rubbing his back, he turns smiling as she reaches for his hand.

He takes it, looking down at their hands, he smirks liking the way her rings sparkle on her finger…right where they belong.

BLOGMAS -Day 13- “A Husband for Christmas” Short Story

lights blogmas edit

A husband for christmas short story_Christmas 2017

Noel smiles into her mirror, pulling at her fitted emerald green mini dress, she turns in her mirror to check the back of her outfit.

Just as she touches up her red lipstick, her phone begins to play a Christmas melody aloud.

Smiling at the “Hubby” title that flashes across the phone, she picks it up to answer it.

“Hey baby,” she says her smile evident through her voice.

Kris smiles as he stands in the corridor of a fancy restaurant.

“Hey baby, are you on your way?”

“About to leave in a few minutes, just putting on the finishing touches.”

“Ah, all the bells and whistles for me?” he asks with a comic feel to his voice.

“All the bells and whistles,” she says with a laugh.

Kris looks around surveying that he’s out of ear shot before making his next comment.

“Please tell me your wearing that sexy red lingerie I bought you?”

Noel’s eyes go wide, as she gasps, Kris laughs.

“You better be alone right now,” she says her hands on her hips, as she rolls her sparkling brown eyes.

“Baby I think I can actually hear you blushing,” he says with a chuckle.

“Shut up,” she says laughing as she flips her perfectly curled brunette locks behind her.

“I’m sure you look perfect, just get your sexy ass over here quick. Everyone is asking me where my wife is and I’m kind of missing you.”

Noel laughs and smiles at the wedding picture of she and Kris on her vanity.

“I’m on my way.”

“Ok I’ll see you soon.”

“Bye, I love you.”

“I love you…bye babe.”

Kris smirks and heads back into the restaurant.

Noel rushes downstairs passing pictures of she and Kris throughout their relationship hung up on the walls of their cozy home.

She grabs her purse, coat and car keys and rushes out the door.

Kris is mingling at his holiday party, he checks his watch in between pleasant conversations with coworkers.

Time begins to  pass and Kris begins to worry, he walks away to the side and dials his wife’s number.

It rings a few times and then goes to voice mail.

Kris’ brow furrows, “Hey baby, it’s me. It’s been a bit since you said you were leaving. I figured you’d be here by now. Give me a ring, let me know your ok. I love you.”

Kris steps outside to look around.  The New York City streets glisten with Christmas lights.

Kris checks his phone again.

Nothing.

A co- worker Jack, steps outside, calling to him; “Hey Kris, what are you doing out here man?”

“I’m just waiting for Noel, she should have been here by now.”

“Did you call her?”

“Yea but it just rings and then goes straight to voicemail.”

“Well maybe she left her cell at home. I’m sure she’s on her way, you know the city, she probably just got stuck in traffic. Come on back in, it’s freezing.”

“No man, something feels wrong. I feel like something bad might have happened.”

“What? Are you crazy? What now that your married your gonna turn into a neurotic?”

“When it comes to Noel, I’m always a neurotic. She’s my everything. And she knows that. Which is why she always has her phone and she always picks up. And if she can’t pick up she texts.”

Kris looks at his phone again, he begins to pace, running his hands through his sandy brown hair, as he dials Noel again.

No answer.

Kris huffs, and leaves yet another message. “Noel, baby, please call me. Where are you? I need to know that your ok. Call me.”

Kris hangs up his phone.

He looks at Jack, “I need to go look for her,” he says beginning to turn away, as his phone begins to ring, mirroring the same Christmas melody Noel had playing earlier when he called her.

“Oh thank god, that’s her,” he says with relief.

“See there ya go, no need to get all worried,” Jack says.

“Hey Noel, Baby, where are you?”

“Hello Mr. Thornwood?”

“Yes. Who’s calling, where’s my wife?” Kris’ face falls, as his heart freezes in his chest, it begins to tighten knowing his suspicions might be true. The voice on the other end was not the voice he was used to. The happy, smiley tone of his beautiful wife.

“Mr. Thornwood, my name is Dr. King, your wife was in a car accident, we are prepping her for surgery now, she’s at Mount Sinai Hospital.”

“Oh my god…What do you mean….What happened, what kind of surgery?”

“Mr. Thornwood, I don’t want to alarm you but your wife has to be tended to quickly. Once you get here, I will have an nurse fill you in.”

“Oh my god. I-I’m on my way,” he says his mind blurring, his sight hazy.

“What?” asks his co-worker.

“I have to go,” Kris says rushing toward the street to hail a cab.

“Kris, man, what is it?” Jack says following him.

“My wife, she was… in some kind of accident, she’s in the hospital.”

Kris begins to panic as cab after cab passes him by.

“I have to get to her.”

“Kris, Kris come on, let’s take my motorcycle, it’s around the back,” Jack says taking off quickly.

Kris nods and rushes off with his friend.

The hospital doors open, and Kris rushes in, blinded by the bright lights and chaos.

“Excuse me,” he says springing toward the nurses station.”Dr. King called me, my name is Kris Thornwood, my wife….(his eyes begin to fill up with tears) my wife… Noel Thornwood was in an accident. They said she’s in surgery. I need someone to tell me what’s happening.”

The nurse sympathetically looks up at him.

“Hi Mr. Thornwood, Dr. King told me to expect you. Your wife is in surgery now.”

“What happened? Is she okay?”

“She was in a car accident and suffered some head injuries and internal abdominal bleeding. There’s an officer waiting near by to explain the details of the accident to you.”

“Is she going to be ok?”

“The doctor’s are doing everything they can do to make sure that she’ll be able to make a full recovery.”

Kris begins to feel his chest tighten up again, the heaviness creeping in, panic setting in.

“Excuse me, sir, are you Mr. Thornwood?” a police officer asks walking over to him.

Kris looks up, “Yes, do you know what happened with my wife’s accident?”

“Your wife was involved in a head on collision, unfortunately there was some black ice that caused another car to spin out of control and drive into her. Although the roads are icy this time of a year, we are still investigating the driver who drove into your wife. There could be a possibility that the driver was under the influence.”

“So…your saying my wife’s accident wasn’t actually an accident?”

“As I said sir, we are still gathering evidence. There is no reason to believe anything foul was at play just yet. I assure you we will follow through and get to the bottom of this.”

“Oh my god…I can’t believe this.”

Dr. King emerges from the operating room with a look of exhaustion.

“Who is here for Noel Thornwood?”

Kris turns and rushes over-“I’m her husband Kris. How is he? Is she gonna be ok?”

“She’s in recovery now, the surgery went very well, and we will know more about her release once she fully wakes up. She’s been in and out for a while, but she is just coming down from all the aesthesia, so maybe give her a minute to adjust.”

“Can I see her?”

“Yes but if she does wake up,  she’ll be groggy, so just make it brief.”

“Thank you.”  Kris says rushing in.

Kris walks into the recovery room to see Noel laying in a hospital bed dressed in a typical hospital robe he knows she would hate, covered in bruises and bandages. Her color pale. Her smile, faded. Her engagement ring and wedding band gone.

Kris’ eyes well up all over again, as he walks slowly over to her bed side.

“Baby, my god, what happened to you? I’m so sorry.”

Kris reaches and takes her hand in his lacing his fingers through hers.

“Noel, baby, I’m here. I’m with you.”

Kris’ eyes widen as he feels Noel’s grip tighten around his hand.

“Noel, Noel I’m here, baby, I’m here.” he says stroking her cheek, his wedding band catching the light from the terrible fluorescent glare above.

Noel begins to stir, her eyes flutter open.

Kris sighs heavily.

“Hi. Hey beautiful. God, I’m so happy your ok. I love you so much,” he says leaning down and placing a sweet, yet firm kiss on her lips, his tears streaming down his face.

Noel seems uncomfortable, she stirs, her eyes darting around, trying to focus, trying to make sense of her surroundings.

“Baby, hey, I’m here, can you see me, what’s wrong? Are you in pain?”

Noel looks up into his eyes.

“Hey, what is it?” he says leaning in and cupping her face.

“Who…Who are you?” Noel asks, Kris’ face dropping along with his heart.

BLOGMAS -Day 12- Snowed Inn Christmas

Hallmark is usually the place I go to get my Christmas love, fix. Romantic movies full of Christmas cheer. But since I no longer get the Hallmark Channel, I’ve turned to Lifetime. I love Hallmark way more, but this year Lifetime is stepping up their game. Their new Christmas Movie, stars one of my absolute favorites- Bethany Joy Lenz. And it looks adorable, I for one, can’t wait! 😀 (I may even do a Movie Review later on!)

lights blogmas edit

Movie description: Jenna Hudson (Bethany Joy Lenz, “Colony”) and Kevin Jenner (Andrew Walker, “A Bride for Christmas”) are polar opposites, working for the same online publication in New York City. With both having nowhere they want to be for Christmas, they volunteer for a special writing assignment. After a snowstorm forces their plane to land in none other than Santa Claus, Indiana, the two are placed in a Christmas Wonderland and the focus of their story shifts to saving the historic town inn run by Carol and Christopher Winters. As the two overcome their differences, they also rediscover the magic of Christmas. But with the inn’s fate in jeopardy and the return of someone from Jenna’s past, Carol and Christopher lend a helping hand to bring Jenna and Kevin together. The film also stars Tasha Smith.

Check out the trailer:

Joy and her oh so handsome co-star Andrew Walker even filmed a little music video performing a duet to promote the movie. Take a look- It’s perfect! Joy is really in her element with the polka dot dress and the bluesy song.

BLOGMAS -Day 11- The pressure the Holidays put on us

lights blogmas edit

Every year I say the same thing. I want to get ahead of the madness. I want to decorate early so that I can enjoy it longer, I want to find the perfect pair of pajamas, the perfect ugly sweater, the perfect dessert recipe. I want to shop for gifts earlier this year and not have to go around crazy rushing the last few days before. And every year I end up a stressed out mess. Some things I wanted to do- I didn’t, and things I didn’t want to happen- happened.

ob-ss885_scream_hv_201204261107431

not my photo

Because in the mist of my already stressful daily life- throw in the holiday chaos and I’m a ball of nerves.

I did a whole post on this topic last year, titled “Have the holidays become too stressful?” And it’s crazy that every word can still ring true for this year too.

As I get older, I try to do gifts for everyone and all the kids, and along with being in two other weddings coming up, (one right after Christmas) my funds are kind of low and it’s been kind of tough to budget everything in. At the end of the day I wish I could just focus on the real meaning of this time of year. The birth of Christ. The celebration of love, friendship, and family. A memory of togetherness. You don’t have to put a price tag on any of that.

It’s hard not to let my cynical side out during this time. You see others decorating and buying gift after gift, everything just seems so easy for them. They know how  to get shit done. But I know how Facebook is deceiving. If I were to put a picture of my tree up, it would look all sparkly and pretty, sure. But it wouldn’t show me hounding my dad to bring up the tree from the basement, or me and my mom stringing beads on each branch with tired eyes. You don’t see the stress. But it’s there, for everyone.

There are two sides to me during this time of year- that girl who wants to be- festive af- that’s what all the kids are saying these days, right?- and that girl who gets overwhelmed from all angles and starts to feel run down and anxious. And the latter is just not the best feeling, especially when society tells you- you should be happy.

Which brings me to my next point- it’s okay to not be ok, during the holidays. It’s ok to feel funky, to feel stressed- or going even further- to feel depressed or sad. For some people the holidays can be really hard. There are people who are grieving a loved one, or who just suffered a terrible heartbreak, or who may be suffering from an illness, or just feeling stressed from work, or some people who may not have jobs at all and are just struggling to make ends meet. Or there may be people who may just be going through something difficult, personally. At times, in life, sometimes when it rains it pours and it could be a combination of a bunch of things that could be hindering one’s Christmas spirit. The truth is, you never know what someone else is going through.

So no, Christmas doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to decorate early, you don’t have to find the perfect gifts for everyone, you don’t have to stress what to wear, or what to bake. Do what you can do, with the means you have, and do it with love. And those who love you will understand you. If not, that’s unfortunate for them. Because yes Christmas is magical, but it’s just another day with the same people and no matter what as long as you are surrounded by the ones you love, celebrating the birthday of our creator, than what more could you really ask for? Materialistic items get shoved in drawers and closets, put in basements, under beds and forgotten about. So why do we put so much weight on it.

I know it’s hard not to. I know it’s sometimes a comparing game. Well they got me this last year, and I only got them this, so this year I have to do better. Or- they got me 5 gifts, so I have to get them 5 gifts. Tit for tat on Christmas? No thanks. 😉

Every year I stress myself out and in the end- it all comes together. It always does. My last minute shopping forces me to make quicker decisions, my baking gets done, my decorations get put up. Whatever needs to get gone, will get done. Whatever doesn’t, won’t. It’s simple really. So why can’t we live more simplistically? It’s about prioritizing. Truth be told I’m not quite the best at doing so myself. But I’m trying to learn to be better at it. Here’s wishing we all learn to take a deeper look at Christmas for what it really is. A time to celebrate who really put us here.

Deep breaths friends, we’ll get through this together!

Have you guys ever felt stressed during the holidays?

Tell me about it in the comments below!

BLOGMAS -Day 10- Winter Wonderland

The first snowfall happened over this weekend and it’s hard not to be inspired by the beauty of it all. I had a family party quite a ways away and was actually driving in the car for most of it. I know that snow can be a big pain and can be a total inconvenience. It can stir up feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety for me at times. But the way it looks when it first falls, the way it covers our tree branches in blanketed crisp purity, it is just so beautiful to me. In the car I looked out the window and saw the white flakes falling, as “O Holy Night” by Celine Dion played on the radio. Chills covering my arms.  And Christmas feeling so near. So this poem is about that feeling you get when snow can be just magical. I hope you enjoy!

Engine running along

Christmas carols humming strong

Brisk winter breeze

Snow falling gently upon vacant trees

Whispers you hear from the wind

Snowmen waiting to be made

Snow…

Let it snow

Snow…

Lightly kissing the cars and city streets

Santa’s on his way

Elves setting up his sleigh

Although it may be hard to see

Look closely and you will find glee

Snow…

Let it snow

Snow…

Although you may feel cold

Can you see the beauty as it unfolds

Blankets of perfect bright white

Christmas trees decked in lights

Reindeer waiting for their cue

Taking flight to come see you

Christmas spirit everywhere

Winter Wonderland is here

BLOGMAS -Day 9- A Christmas Morning Memory

lights blogmas edit

Growing up, my brother and I lived for Christmas morning. We were always up bright and early, jumping on our parents bed to wake up so that we can start opening our presents.

My Brother & I visiting Santa in the 90’s 🙂

However it’s important to note, that even though we loved getting presents, we also grew up going to church regularly, we were raised to know the true meaning of Christmas.

Referring back to Christmas morning when I was younger, there is one story that I will never forget.

I awoke early in the morning and snuck a peek at the pile of gifts that laid beneath the tree. There were so many that they spread throughout the floor. And standing in the middle of the room was a Toy Story cardboard toy display. The kind they used to have in Burger King and McDonald’s that showcased whatever toys were featured in the happy meal. I remember being obsessed with collecting those things!

I remember seeing this and rushing into my room, and pulling my brother awake to see. Drowsy he followed and I still remember his face of shock.

When our parents woke up, we finally got the back story of how this thing could possibly end up in our living room.

My dad asked if he could buy the whole display and well…they let him. So he did.

I remember playing with my Little Bo Peep like crazy. And it was the coolest gift ever!

Do you have any special Christmas moments you still remember from your childhood?
