Love Conflicted Soundtrack & Author’s Commentary

BACK STORY: Over the past 8 months or so Love Conflicted has been featured on and off the michelle leigh writes blog. Its premiere date was May 11th 2015, and the consistent updates lasted through June 25th 2015. Then I took a massive hiatus from the series. I finally got my act together in the New Year and finished it this week, finishing my stories is incredibly important to me, far too many go unfinished. It was important for me to see this through. Seeing as how I slipped up on this week’s schedule, I figured I’d give you a rare Sunday post, I am thinking about adding Sundays to the schedule, so that will put me at a 3 times a week schedule. However, it is to still be determined, if I can actually commit to that, I don’t want to get ahead of myself. But I may do a trial run and see if it works out. As promised here is the Love Conflicted inspired “Soundtrack” and My Author’s Commentary.

DISCLAIMER: Love Conflicted is not a real motion picture nor does it have a soundtrack coming out. This is just me living in my fictional happy writer’s world. Where I pretend and where I run the show. Haha. Back in college whenever I would hand in a script or be working with already written material/feature film scenes, my professor would ask me who I would have play the characters, where would it take place, what location? And so I think that kind of stuck with me, because as I write this story series I want to include those aspects and give you a visual experience. Mysterious Attraction was my first shot at it, recently A Broken Heart For Christmas, and now also with Love Conflicted. Along the way there have been little one shots, or shorts including a few parts as I will. But that distinction is not always clear, I don’t always know how long a story is going to take to tell. As a kid I used to say “Make Pretend” all the time. Make Pretend you’re a princess who slays dragons. Make pretend you’re a ballerina who bull rides. Make pretend you’re writing a screenplay and you get to pick the actors, and release a soundtrack and commentary that people have been anxiously awaiting. The options could be endless. So let’s “Make Pretend.” Enjoy!

Onto the next portion…My Love Conflicted *Author’s Commentary*

GENERAL NOTES:

This drama series was rooted in the love story between two unlikely souls. Maggie an elementary school teacher and Ricky an undercover “mobster” who thought he was working for an honorable CIA organization that turned out to be corrupt. Maggie and Ricky meet by chance and experience an instant spark. The bulk of their relationship is rooted in sub context. You don’t really see much of their love in current time. You experience it through the occasional flashback, through the stories they share about each other, and through the intense conversations they have when are reunited for brief periods of time. You get to see their life together through images on Maggie’s phone as well.

Lily and Ian are introduced gradually. I always feel that my mind automatically goes to a minimum of a 4 person cast. The love story is there, boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy gets girl, boy screws up, boy tries to win girl back. And in the mist of all that the story has to keep going…enter supporting characters Ian and Lily. They’re budding love story is just a happy coincidence. Their story is one of a lighter more sarcastic, sassy and fun tone. In contrast to Maggie and Ricky’s love story which is no heartbreaking and so dramatically driven. The “I can’t breathe without you” feel is heavy for those too. Yet Ian and Lily keep things light and let’s be honest they are most comedy you’ll get here. Lily has her one liners that zing, doesn’t she?

Also the story lines Mob nod must be a trend, huh? [See Mysterious Attraction] Ode to Sonny Corinthos and General Hospital.

THEMES:

There are consistent themes of Love, Friendship, Trust, Fear, Bravery, Finding yourself, Coming into your own skin, Independence, Guilt, and ultimately rebuilding and waking each other up to inspire a better way of life. That goes for all characters and all forms of the relationships between these 4 people.

DREAM CASTING:

When I sat down with the first scene, it was somewhat of a scene that resembled the first part, where there was this back and forth between Ricky and a female character. You could tell she was angry with him and there was a very good reason, one that he was trying to make light of and gloss over with charm and his belief in their love. His belief that love could somehow help them overcome the catastrophic bomb he just dropped on her. i.e.: that he’s essentially a hit man. But I never really knew who these character would become and getting to know them and writing their dialogue and choosing how they would handle things, that’s been the most fun.

Ricky and Maggie

Ricky: Jesse Lee Soffer (I think he and Lenz would be magic on screen together!)

Ricky faces the blow back from years of horrifying assignments. He finally realizes that what he’s been doing hasn’t been for the better of his country. As he comes to grips with that reality he is faced with trying to protect the woman he loves in the mist of trying to out his corrupt boss, Cobbs. Ricky is a good hearted man, but his job has trained him to perceive himself as a villain of sorts. We never meet Cobbs but we don’t have to. His threat is there, it’s real and evident in Ricky’s fear. He’s almost like this mysterious ghost that looms over them, and we never know if he’s actually going to make his move. I wanted the threat and the fear to be real, without having to have some big reveal or altercation with the actual threat himself. I wanted to sway away from the route Mysterious Attraction took, of kidnappings, and hostage situations. Although the dangers were very similar, the main altercation was ultimately Ricky’s arrest and his choosing to let Maggie go, completely breaking her heart and his own.

Maggie: Bethany Joy Lenz (She is my QUEEN…I can’t even tell you!)

Maggie is that girl that is so kind and beautiful and so full of hope and light that you just expect no one to ever hurt her. That and the fact that she closes herself off from any kind of risk. Therefore insuring herself she won’t get hurt. She’s the girl that is completely unaware of how amazing she is, and is timid in her sexuality. Meeting Ricky who instantly uses his charm and wit to convince her to take a risk makes her feel alive. The fact that he looks at her in a way that she’s never been looked at before, does wonders for her too. But with all that being said, Maggie comes into her own as she slowly realizes everyone around her is trying to coddle her. She hates feeling like a victim and chooses to take her life in her own hands, going after what she wants.

candice-lily

Lily: Candice Accola-King

If you know my writing, you know the best friend is always the sassy one. [See: Demi Lovato as Roxy in Mysterious Attraction.] I don’t know what it is. But I just feel like the best friend has to be this loose cannon who just speaks the truth. In many way Lily serves as the audience’s perspective. You know when you’re watching a movie or TV show and someone is doing something so stupid you just scream at the TV. Yea, well that’s Lily. She states what should appear as the obvious to the others actors in the story.

meet ian

Ian: Nick Wechsler

Ian is a sweet, calm guy. The voice of reason. Although he too has been involved in these high-stake illegal activities, his self-awareness is much further along than Ricky’s. He knows how to separate himself from his corruption leader of a boss, and knows that his actions were a product of being coerced and trained for years. He also has had a bit more distance than Ricky, as Ricky was made a leader in the organization and felt the brunt of things toward the end, Ian was more of fixer of things, the driver, a tying up loose ends guy. Ian was the one who has been by Ricky’s side, the one who would sacrifice for the wellbeing of everyone. He’s heroic. But it’s a quiet heroism. You don’t realize how self-less he is right off the bat. He’s also got his own charm. His flirtation isn’t as blunt as Ricky’s when it comes to the ladies. He’s a quiet compliment-er, he observes Lily and her nature. He uses what he learns to draw her in and to connect with her. He genuinely speaks his mind and although he goes along with Lily’s sassy flirtation he is completely obvious about his intention to fall in love with her.

-The exclusion of voiceover, the implementation of inner thoughts-

This wasn’t consistent throughout the story. It started off with Maggie’s inner thoughts because she was dealing with a lot on her own, so we had to hear her thoughts. Once Lily was introduced those thoughts were reflected in the dialogue between those two characters as we experienced her pain through the things she confided in her friend.

-The Evolution of relationships-

Friendship-

“Laggie”

lily and maggie bffs

It’s evident that Lily and Maggie have been friends their whole lives. Lily is Maggie’s rock. She is the one to look out for her. Let’s face it she has no filter and will test anyone who tries to cause Maggie any pain.

“Rian”

ricky and ian bffs

Throughout the story we see Ricky deal with the consequences of his actions. We see him deal with having to suffer through causing Maggie so much pain. Ian is someone who is brought in to remain the calm, cool, collected person, he’s cool under pressure. He serves as the voice of reason and as Ricky’s eyes, when he can’t be there for Maggie. The one who is Ricky’s right hand man, and will sacrifice to help him in anyway. They have been partners forever, but their friendship is their first priority. They have each other’s backs, always.

Romantic-

“Illy”

ian and lily kiss

Ian passed Lily’s bluster…

When Lily and Ian meet it’s kind of a comedic moment. Rare for this series, but it serves as a breath of fresh air. We see Lily’s sassy nature at its best, and we see that even the most stoic of men can be instantly distracted by a beautiful and alluring woman. Lily is the way she is due to a recent heartbreak. Ian takes his time to court her, proving to her that he’s worth it. Lily’s calm and collected not to mention sassy nature is her defense mechanism. Ian gets to her, with his innocent yet somewhat obvious flirtations.

“Micky”

falling (2)

Took a while, but the love was always there

The main love story is set between Maggie and Ricky. Maggie lives a plain life, a routine life. A life of rules. Ricky follows his own set of rules. When their worlds collide, opposites attract and they find something in each other that compliments them as individuals. Things they have been looking for all along. Ricky instills adventure and confidence in Maggie’s life, showing her how amazing she is while trying to keep a light hearted sexy tone to their conversations. He’s definitely got a bit of a problem with telling her what to do, because he’s so afraid to lose her. His overprotective nature does cost him at times. While, Maggie instills belief, love and stability in Ricky’s life. Bringing a sense of realism to life, showing him that his criminal past isn’t what defines him. Ricky and Maggie have a back and forth that is evident. There is always a high level of tension, because they are always drawn to each other even though they both experience their reservations about being together. Regardless the love is always there.

-What I’ve learned about my writing, and need to work on for my next series and future projects-

TIPS:

*Write the series (or at least the bulk of it) in advance before posting.

Posting as I go makes it hard for me to stay motivated at times and makes it hard to remember where I left off. Which can cause continuity issues and timeline confusions.

*Keep note of the timeline and realize that not everyone can see it as clearly as you can.

This story has taken place over the course or nearly 1 ½-2 years. In real time we see about a year of it. But Maggie and Ricky have had an ongoing relationship for nearly 2 years. They were together for about 6 months before she found out about his job. 6 months he was able to hide and act like a normal boyfriend, but on the sly. Lily was the only one who truly knew they were an actual couple. To the outside world they seemed friendly. When Maggie finds out about Ricky’s job she pulls away. As Ricky begins to fight for her-coming full force to win her back. Maggie thinks she’s pregnant and worries Ricky’s lifestyle will cause her and her child pain. Their relationship moves quickly, as Ricky had revealed they said their “I love you’s” a week after dating. The separation/reuniting period is on and off for a while, and then after Ricky’s arrest, we jump 6 months ahead which allude to the growth these characters have made. In that time Ian and Lily have started their own romance and seem to be smitten with each other. Ricky spent his time getting well, and Maggie spent her time being in her own skin. Although the time apart was painful for both of them, they made it back to each other in the end, better than they were before, with a promising future ahead of them.

*Learn how to implement backstory better.

I feel like the little facts like Maggie’s a school teacher and Lily suffered a bad relationship could have been better thought out and more implemented throughout the story’s entirety. I need to be careful of that next time.

*Describe location, outfits, appearance more thoroughly, paint a picture for the audience. Where are they, what does it look like? Just because I see it, doesn’t mean you do.

*Learn to sus out the basis of the story before I post.

This can be hard because I often don’t know where the story will go. I may have a vague idea, but then as I’m writing the direction can change in an instant.

*Be more consistent and stick to a solid posting schedule.

I usually post on Mondays and Thursdays every week. For a while this series was all I featured on my blog, and then I kind of felt like I needed to regroup and give other categories on my blog some love. But then the series kind of took a really long break and it was hard to get back into, I just kept putting it off.

*Do research BEFORE you post.

With the crime/legal issues/mob story lines there are certain clauses and lingo and statures that go with that type of plotline. I feel like I didn’t know much about what the CIA does and that caused a problem as I wrote Ricky’s character. I would research as I went which I think that caused some inconsistencies and some weirdness. I did my best, hopefully it came across accurately enough.

*Don’t be afraid of sexual content and more explicit language. And don’t apologize.

I think this is a big one for me to learn. I find myself putting warnings and disclaimers before any chapters that contain more adult matters. Sex is a part of relationships and loving someone, and telling a love story. Cursing is part of heated conversation and gives a line a more dignified delivery. In this series, I definitely explored a more adult style of writing. I usually edit myself when it comes to love scenes, because I feel like it may be perceived as slutty or trashy, and I’m still trying to learn how to write an effective love scene. But I think with this series I’m breaking out of my shell slowly. I am 24, so I mean come on now, the things on TV and in the theaters now, would make my Maggie and Ricky measly shower sex scene seem like a Disney Channel movie.

*Write more like a script, then a novel.

This is something that I’ve noticed. I want the series to be read like a movie, and yet I’m writing and reading it like a short story. Formatting definitely needs work.

*Step up your editing images game, and use the slideslow option more often.

I don’t have image editing software on my computer. I actually found a way to edit images through Microsoft, but some edits come out SO BAD. Lol. Some come out pretty good. I’ve definitely gotten better since the Mysterious Attraction days, but I can only imagine the images I could create if I actually had Photoshop! Sometimes I’ll edit an image and it’ll come out pretty good and I will just get so excited. Seeing my characters come together like that makes it almost seem real. Oh just let me live. Let me dream! 😉 WordPress just added the slideshow option (or I just realized they had one) and it makes things so much neater, you can add captions and watch the story unfold like a mini movie. I love it!

******************************************

So there you have it guys, as this post goes up, we say Good Bye to this series, and plan for the next one. I’m excited! Thank you for reading, and congrats if you had the patience to stay tuned until the end! 😉

“Get out of your own way”

I’d like to tell you that I have full belief in my writing capabilities. That I believe I am good, and can own anything that comes my way. But I’d be lying. It’s not that I don’t believe in myself, I know I can write and I know I can write well. But self doubt and insecurity is the way of the world, and unfortunately sometimes, it wins. So as writers, what do we do when that happens? We write anyway. And we continue to write. I’ll be honest sometimes I’ll spend hours on a post, and then just before I post it, I second guess it. And I wonder if it’s even worth posting. If I gave it my all. Truth be told there isn’t a post I don’t dissect. But yet I continue to post anyway. When I sit back and think, I come to the same conclusion. Being a writer is my only choice here. I guess it’s like falling in love, it just happens, and you have to go with it. This is my calling. And although I may not have my shit together just yet, and I still have a lot of soul searching and growing up to do. I think having this realization in the back of my mind, even though at times I forget it, having it to refer back to is so important. Because not doing this, isn’t even an option. Now being a writer isn’t exactly the best way to make money. I myself am coming to the conclusion that sometimes part-time work is going to be needed to make some cash, and give you some stability in your life. But giving up on that dream is not in my line of vision. It can’t be. I don’t think my brain or sanity could take it. Too many stories to tell. So when the walls start caving in and you feel like you’re going to emotionally explode, get out of your head. And get out of your own way. And just do what you do best. Write. Because writers feel things deeper than most, and when we tell those stories, someone out there in the universe is going to get it, and feel gotten. Keep fighting, keep striving, and know that there is always a safe place for the written word here on Michelle Leigh Writes. Soldier on my friends.

“Love is all you need.”

So we’ve all seen it. We’ve all watched two characters come together after endless episodes of waiting and small flirtations that drive us crazy.

Yea I’m talking about Love on screen.

This is something that I think makes a show.

Relationships.

The ups and downs, the ins and outs, the rollercoaster ride of emotions.

I love tv, I love on screen love.

I love watching it blossom.

There’s always that one couple that kind of shines brighter then the rest.

A crowd favorite.

Come on fangirls, you know what I’m talking about.

The couple that you chronicle, in your mind.

This was the first time they met.

The first time, he looked at her the way a guy looks at a girl he knows isn’t “just a friend.”

The first time she blushed over a compliment or a come on.

The first date.

The first kiss.

I’m talking about those epic romances, the two characters that just fit together.

The two characters that you can’t see being with anyone else but each other.

I’m talking about the Ross & Rachel.

The Pacey & Joey.

The Luke & Lorelei.

The Cory & Topanga.

The list is endless.

Each of these couples have a unique story. Different reasons for bringing them together. Different love stories to tell.

Some love stories are brought to life out of mutual hatred, or pure friendship, some are accidental yet happy coincidences. Love is what makes tv shows soar. It’s what sells the angst and goes beyond the coined phrase “sex sells.” Those sweet moments and emotional connections and conversations between two characters meant to fall in love, are just as important as the love scenes they may share.

81303-debra-messing-fangirling-gif-KHvi[1]

I speak on behalf of many fangirls when I say, squealing over tv couples is a favorite past time.  I live for onscreen romances. You know when the guy makes the girl feel like the only girl in the world. #RihannaReference #Circa2010 #EwHowWasThat5YearsAgo Anyway I digress.

As a writer I have a new found appreciation for tv show couples. I can only hope to be able to pen such brilliant love stories. Stories that give young girls hope and happiness, and let’s face it butterflies and dreams of finding love of their own one day. I want to be able to create a show that makes people feel like they can relate to it. And being honest I want to create a show where fans have reasons to make OTP lists and ship names. #Thatsthedream

The key to a good tv story is…love…challenge me and I will find a way to prove you wrong 😉

With that being said I leave you with one of the most breathtaking scenes in 90’s television.

“I remember everything.”

Oh my god. This scene, the chemistry, the song, the dance, the looks, the moments. Gosh it’s brilliant. #ItWasPACEYSCREEK

Writer’s Corner

writers corner

This week on Beyond Belief…. 😉

“Writer’s Block…True or False. Fact or Fiction.”

(Who knows that reference, high-five if you do, we can now be best friends!)

Anyway in today’s Writer’s Corner I would like to focus on the dreaded Writer’s Block. In my research of writers that have come before me, I have heard many upon many say that writer’s block is a myth. That you just have to write and get over it somehow, and eventually something will come. Well to that I say, phooey! Yes phooey. It’s bull. Not the part about powering through, but the part about it being a myth. Any writer knows that sometimes, you just can’t put it into words. Sometimes, your images are flying rapid speed in your mind and they can’t quite find their way onto your page. Or you simply don’t have anything in dire need of pouring out of your heart at that moment. You are spent, mentally exhausted. I’m going through it as we speak, (why else do you think you are getting two Writer’s Corners this week!) I think that’s what brought up the idea for this post. I’m sitting at my computer trying to think of something great to post and I’ve got nothing. Sure I could throw something together, but it’s not anything I’d be proud of. I even tried for a poem, got through about 4 lines and nothing after that. What the hell? It sucks, it just does. But I do believe it does exist. A writer is never going to be 100% inspired every second of everyday. 100% inspiration any day is a stretch for that matter. And yes, there are times (most of the time) that we will have to fight to write. Write even when can’t. Even when we don’t want to. And just accept the fact that it will suck. But it will be something. But at the same time, writer’s block is still real to me. I know it is. Sometimes it just gets the best of me, and I wind up removing myself for a day or two and then viola like magic, back in business, and up and running, and typing away like I’ve been trying to all along. Because I have something to say, and people are going to hear it. Isn’t that always the case? After a little break, new ideas and exciting story lines are at the tip of your brain and you are unstoppable. So my advice… (not that I’m in the business of giving any really…but hell sharing is caring, right?) notice your writer’s block, and understand that it’s not forever. It is real. I feel you. We are here, all in this together. Give it a day, give your mind a break, and recharge. Do something else that you love. Go outside, talk to a friend, look through unfinished pieces. Something will spark you. The world around you is your blank canvas, paint it red, or yellow, or freakin’ magenta! God speed my friends. Keep writing, and keep feeling all the feels you lovely humans. And feel free to comment, let’s chat! We writers need to stick together.

So…what’s your take on writer’s block? Spoiler Alert, it’s cool if you disagree with me, that’s what opinions are for. Go on and have them! I sure have mine. 😉 And if there are any specific topics anyone would like me to cover on MichelleLeighWrites “Writer’s Corner” let me know! I am open to suggestions, and I think it could be really helpful to share with each other; writer to writer. Let’s start a conversation. 😀

“What do you want to write?”

When you think of someone saying they want to be a writer, what form of writing pops into your mind? I imagine it’s an array of things in which you question. Novels? Short Stories? Poetry? Plays? Fiction? Non Fiction? Romance? Mystery? Do they want to write for films or maybe for television? Now imagine the confusion you feel just having all those possibilities jumbled up in your mind. All the differences, yet similarities all those forms share. That’s how most writers feel every day. That pull and push of which direction they should go, which writing style suits their heart and soul best. Their minds want them to do one thing but maybe their hearts whisper something entirely different to them in secret. Writers feel emotions deeply. But the main thing I’ve learned in my search to choose, is that all forms hold creativity at their core. It’s about heart. So I have to wonder, is it better to dabble in many different things, and be good in each, or is it better to focus all your energy in being great in one specific thing? Since when has being a jack of all trades been considered a bad thing? Since when is being interested and experimenting in all different things, a bad thing? I’m just wondering here, myself. Can a writer really bridge all gaps and form them into one. Poetry or Short Stories? TV or film?  Are our writer’s hearts big enough for them all? Why must we choose? Why can’t we do them all? We can. And we will. As writers, we don’t have a choice. Stories come into mind, and capture our hearts, and no matter how long they take us to get them out, eventually a story will be told, heart in hand.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

What do you want to be when you grow up? The annoying question that came long before the current “Do you have a boyfriend yet?” or “Did you find a job yet?” But unlike my recent answers, the initial, at times invasive, question was always greeted by a new answer, a new phase. One day I wanted to be a ballerina, then I discovered Britney Spears and wanted to be a singer. An event planner. A director. And now most recently a writer…TV writer to be exact. The truth is I often question, the path I’ve chosen. And if it was the right one for me. If this is what I’m destined to be…meant to do for the rest of my life…be a writer. And the confusion is heavy at times. When they say 20 somethings are just trying to find themselves…it’s totally true. You may not know it but that’s what- the feeling you have in the pit of your stomach that questions you and everything you are- that’s what that is. You are just trying to find yourself. But how do you do that? How do I do that? I choose to write. And I may write more some days than others. And there are days when I don’t want to write at all. Or days when I don’t feel like sitting in front of a computer screen all day. All of it can be exhausting. My fellow writers know this, I’m sure. It starts to weigh on you. But for the most part, it’s still a big part of my life. And I keep coming back to it. The thing is writing has many genres. And you can mingle with all of them. (And make yourself slightly crazy.) Or you can dip your toes in a few and test the waters. I have enjoyed exploring many of them. But that also confuses the crap out of me. Short stories, poetry, pop culture pieces, reviews, movie scripts, tv scripts. The list is endless. And they are all different. But at the heart of it all there is one goal in writing isn’t there? No matter what specific genre you want to fit yourself into. The goal is to tell a story. You have something to say, and you want to share it with the world. You want them to feel. And that’s the driving force for every writer, I think. We don’t just write to write, we write because we love to tell stories. And that is a beautiful thing. So I guess this is what I’m supposed to be doing. Now I just have to figure out where I should be doing it and how to make it happen. I’ll leave you with a quote I recently came across that made me really happy and left me feeling inspired.

“I’m going to take over the world through television.”

“What makes you a writer?”

There are so many fears and struggles in saying you’re a writer. So much so that we often discourage ourselves, from going down that road, because we are scared we won’t be able to do the impossible. To make a living off of it. But I don’t think writers write for money. In fact if we did, then a lot of us would have quit the day we started, because it’s definitely not the easiest money making route, so I’ve learned. I’ve heard so many people say different things about writing. Some say if you write…then you’re a writer. Which I like to believe. And some say, if you don’t write everyday, then you’re not a writer. Which I understand, but I highly doubt that. I’ll confess I don’t write everyday. I may write blurbs here and there everyday. But solid pages upon pages writing every day, I don’t do that. Yet I consider myself a writer. And I think that’s ok.

What I’ve learned as I begin researching fellow writers and reading scripts, and listening to overall writer’s advice, is that you are going to hear a million things from each writer that has come before you. But that’s their story, their path. That may have gotten them to success but that doesn’t mean it will or won’t work for you. You have to make your own path. That’s not to say that slacking and never writing, or not researching makes you a writer, because we all know it doesn’t. You do have to practice your craft. But missing a day or two here and there of writing, doesn’t not make you a writer.

A community which struggles to even consider themselves writers shouldn’t be so hard on ourselves. We all have good days, we all have bad days. We have days when we can write for hours, and days when we just can’t put it into words. But trust that you will get there, maybe not today or the next day, but maybe the day after that. And if you can’t than maybe you move onto your next brilliant idea. There are so many times when I have ideas upon ideas bouncing around in my head and I don’t know which to start with. The pros will tell you, just write it, stop worrying, and just get it on paper. And I totally agree. But that still doesn’t silence that voice in our heads that tells us, it’s safe in my mind. It’s perfect. What if I put in on paper and I ruin it. But what if you don’t? What if you write it, and begin to see it even more clearly? What if it’s a masterpiece? We need to learn to trust ourselves. There are delete buttons, and backspace, there are pencil erasers, and whiteout. Hell we can do this. If you really think about it, we have no choice. We are writers.

What constitutes you as a writer? The amount of pages you’ve written? The amount of hours you spend writing? How many years you’ve been writing? What you’ve been writing? How you’ve been writing? Where you’ve been writing? Winning an Emmy or Oscar? Writing a bestselling novel? Writing newspaper articles about what’s going on in the world? Or can it simply be sharing your ideas between the pages of a journal, posting to a blog? Or just writing from mind to paper? If your thoughts are your own and if you speak from your heart. Why should there be any hesitance.

I’m a writer. I write about my life, my heart, my interests, my hopes, my inspirations, my aspirations. I write about actors, and the love stories they portray. How simple actions can make love blossom on screen. I write reviews about music, music that can move emotional mountains. I write poetry about the world around me. I write about things that inspire me or that make me ask questions. I write about feminism and how believing in it only makes you wiser. I write about what I love, or what matters to me. I write. That’s what I do. And I love it. That doesn’t mean that it’s always easy. Hell some days I can’t even think about writing a sentence, because either writer’s block is kicking my ass, or my brain is fried. Or I just can’t find the words to tell the story that has been running through my mind. But I always manage to find myself back here, writing for you, writing for me. So I guess that’s what makes me a writer. Because no matter what it keeps me coming back. Does it keep you coming back? Because hate to say it, but you’re a writer too. We’re all in this together, just like Troy and Gabriella, (points if you caught that reference haha). God help us all. 😉

Writer’s Corner

 “Selfishly Humble”

Writers are a uniquely selfish yet humble bunch. We write to set our thoughts free. We write to make things make sense for ourselves. We write little bits of us and people we know or people we see around us into storylines without permission. We drag out inspiration from the slightest acquaintances. We write. That’s what we do. Yet we never actually consider or have the guts to call ourselves writers. Because maybe if we say it out loud, someone will judge us or worse we’ll judge ourselves for trying to achieve the nearly impossible; making a living off of writing. And yet here I still am, writing. And if you’re still reading this maybe you are too. So observe, feel, and write. Just keep writing. Even if it’s crap…something will come from everything you write. And whether or not you use everything you write doesn’t matter. Write anyway. The more you write the more you find out who you are.

Mysterious Attraction Commentary

AS PROMISED…my Mysterious Attraction  overview and not so brief writing experience journal. This took me a few weeks to put together, because I wanted to reread the series and take notes. So let’s get into it!

LEGIT - Copy

I love dialogue. I love putting words together to create a feeling, a raw emotion of hidden truths that are seldom spoken. But sometimes all can be said with a look, a glance, a glare, a stare. It’s all in the eyes. And that was the concept of this story.

miranda eyes

im watching you gif

Reading the story back, I read it as a reader. Instead of writing as a writer. And the story is ultimately a love story. I’d categorize this in the soap opera esque meets drama genre.

The main character Lexie is a heroine in some ways and a villain in others. The same could be said about Reeves and Carter. Everyone has their moments of destruction and then they get a clear epiphany of self-discovery and true heart. There is a constant theme of struggle between Right & Wrong, Law & Crime, Love & Lust, and Marriage & Infidelity. There’s a lot of Blurred lines and Gray areas. There are explosions, high emotions, guns, fights, big revelations at every turn. It’s a story that will keep you guessing while people fall in love in the hidden shadows of a dangerous life of revenge.

I put together this collage when I first started writing this series, it kind of acted as my visual storyboard. * I take no credit for the photos used*

In a way this story is also about coming home…in the form of Roxy coming home after years of traveling and constantly finding reasons to stay away. In the form of Lexie coming into who she is flaws and all. A story with some twists and turns for fun entertaining measure.

Mysterious Attraction Dream Cast:

Mysterious Attraction's newest attempt at a movie poster! * I take no credit for the photos used*

Mysterious Attraction’s newest attempt at a movie poster! * I take no credit for the photos used*

Main Cast:

Lexie: Sophia Bush

*the powerhouse

The decision to surround Lexie with male characters was to emphasize the fact that she was the lead, she was the one to beat. She was the woman scorned, the powerhouse, the woman who can take care of herself no matter how many men were surrounding her. I love when stories have strong independent women in them. (yes she was a mobster but that’s besides the point, haha.) Lexie was a femme fatale with a heart of gold once you washed away the pain and fear. It’s a story about knowing she can stand on her own, but learning that she didn’t have to. A story about falling in love and still remaining a strong independent woman who believes in feminism. [for more examples of this check out my post *In Love & Feminism*]

Carter: Ryan Gosling

*the love/the confidant

Reeves: Maurice Benard

*the mob boss/the fixer

Joe: Jensen Ackles

*the past that haunts

Joe is an unusual character. He seems like a careless hardass who just wants to ruin Lexie’s happiness. But after he helps save Lexie’s life we start to see the playfulness of their past. We see that they were once very close, but just weren’t meant to be. Joe has been holding a torch for Lexie for years and has been bitter about her relationship with Carter. But as Lexie realizes how truly he cares for her they get to talk it out and really have a heart to heart, getting them to a place of peace with each other.

Brice: Wilson Bethel

*the voice of reason/the mediator

Kelly: Julie Marie Berman

*the threat/the other woman reversed

Basically what that means is that technically Lexie is helping Carter to cheat on his wife, she is the other woman. But Carter reveals that his marriage has been long since over before Lexie even came into the picture. Making Lexie feel like his real wife, essentially deeming Kelly as the other woman. The story paints Carter and Lexie as an epic/very unconventional love story. But the passion and the love they have for each other is a way for the audience to disregard the fact that Carter is committing adultery and you end up just rooting for them. Besides in a big twist, we also understand why Carter and Kelly haven’t been happy…***cough cough*** Kelly cheated first.

Roxy: Demi Lovato

*the happiness, the light, the fellow woman Lexie needs in her life

tumblr_mqhblmXOKZ1s37850o1_500[1]

I had an idea to introduce another female character for quite some time, but I wasn’t sure how. I didn’t really want her to be involved in the mob too, because I felt like this was Lexie’s story and it was her struggle. So I decided I would bring in someone brand new, but yet who still had history with Lexie and who still knew her and her past and her present. Someone she confided in behind the storyline that was playing out in front of you. Someone who maybe wasn’t as heavy as the life Lexie had immersed herself in. Someone who could shed some new perspective into Lexie’s dark world. Someone who was fun loving and likes to joke around. Someone who doesn’t take herself too seriously, but also someone who equally mirrors Lexie’s spice and powerhouse vibe. Unlike Kelly’s, Roxy’s introduction was a positive one.

Skully: David Morrissey

*the true villain

Infamously spoken of for chapters until they come face to face again and this time the battle has finally come to a head.

Supporting Cast:

Dylan: Sterling Knight

*the youth-the future

Joan: Catherine Hicks

*Carter’s mother

John: George Clooney

*Carter’s dad

Elena: (mentioned) *Lexie’s late mother/Reeves’ Wife

Baby Elena (pictured randomly and not always the same, no actress credit): *Carter and Lexie’s daughter

*Why I didn’t include last names…???*

In my head I just didn’t see the need. There are a lot of nicknames though. I feel like that’s more realistic in life. And more of a mob stereotype. Reeves calls Lexie “princess” as a term of endearment. Carter and Lexie often refer to each other as “babe.” Joe calls Lexie “Lex,” which is to signify the fact that they know each other well and have a history. Although as Carter and Lexie’s story unfolds you will see he too at times will refer to her as Lex. Brice refers to Lexie as “Ms. Lexie” and Carter as “Mr. Carter,” to showcase his level of respect and the fact that he is professional. Elena is introduced later in the story as Carter and Lexie’s baby girl and we soon after find out that Elena was in fact Lexie’s mother’s name. In honor she names her child after her mother. Elena Lexie’s mother is kind of the hidden driving force for everything that has shaped this storyline. Her death was the driving force for Lexie and Reeves’ revenge toward Skully, Elena’s support and influence was Lexie’s driving force to start her own fashion empire, and her advice and love was what ultimately let Lexie pull down her walls and let Carter in.

 How the writing process started:

I first got the idea from Joseph Gordon Levitt’s independent company Hit RECord…I spoke more on that in Mysterious Attraction’s  first post…Click HERE to read.

It initially was just Dialogue. But the challenge was basically to write dialogue without names or actions.

The initial setting is an Office. A conflict between two people…eventually you realize it’s a quarrel between a man and a woman who have some sort of twisted history. As the story evolves so do the settings and we get to see these characters and how they relate to each other outside the walls of this office.

 Reoccurring Themes:

Ruthlessness- It’s a story that revolves around a mob business. Lexie and Reeves are instilled with a certain level of ruthlessness. And Carter displays his own versions of this as well. Most characters will embody this at some point in their character evolution, however they each have different definitions of it.

Power Struggle- Every character in some form goes through this with themselves as well as with another character or characters. It’s evident in Lexie and Carter’s relationship at the very beginning. It’s evident in Skully and Reeves and the mob war they created. It’s evident in Roxy’s playful conquest with Brice. It’s evident in the spats between the men in Lexie’s life…Reeves and Carter, Carter and Joe, and Reeves and Joe.

Fear- Despite the fears that come along with that of a dangerous mob life, Lexie has a severe fear of love failing.

Femme Fatale- Lexie and Roxy are both categorized as such for their obvious charm.

Temptation- The fight to engage further in an affair with Lexie while he’s still married is a constant temptation for Carter. Lexie’s temptation comes in the form of fighting the fear to fall in love.

Courage- Carter steps forward in courage when he confesses his feelings to Lexie and doesn’t let her push him away. Lexie steps forward in courage by allowing Carter in and removing herself from the life she always knew.

Pain/Broken hearts– This is probably one of THE most centric themes. It seems every character has suffered a broken heart. Lexie and Joe broke each other’s hearts years ago. Carter and Lexie are breaking Kelly’s heart now. Kelly broke Carter’s heart years ago. And Reeves and Lexie were brokenhearted from the minute Skully took Elena away from them. So in a way Lexie’s heart was never full…until she met Carter and it started to heal. (too mushy? ok moving on.) Roxy had her heart broken time and time again, but still manages to joke around and keep things light, she never gives up on love.

Destiny- Kelly wasn’t meant for Carter. And Joe wasn’t meant for Lexie. It was just a path they each had to go through to get to each other. Lexie and Carter were destined. You know that saying that says “what do you do when you finally meet the love of your life but you’re already married?” (#oliviapope… President Grant….Shout out to Scandal that show kills!) Or something like that. Pretty morbid concept if you ask me. But it makes for one hell of a story. That’s why we call it FICTION.

Capture

Irony- Carter has a type. Both Kelly and Lexie are similar in the sense that they test him, in many ways. Seems he likes a challenge.

Regret- Reeves regrets the life he’s made and by extension made for his daughter. Lexie regrets playing games with Carter. Kelly regrets cheating on Carter, but also not checking in on herself and her health. Skully has no regrets at all, which is why he is the true villain of this story.

Revenge- Is probably the most prominent driving theme. The story is set in a life where revenge is what keeps the story growing and moving and evolving. It’s what drives the explosions, the fights, the guns, the love, the lust.

The color RED: The color of a bright shade of lipstick. A pop of color in a dark world. It draws you in. A femme fatale’s main accessory. It’s also the color or blood. Blood baths. Blood coursing through veins rapidly during high emotions.

These are a lot of examples, but there are plenty more I’m sure of it!

 Introduction of Images and Why?

Because I wasn’t using stage directions, or character names or actions, I relied on the images to give you guys a little insight as to what was going on with these characters. I was able to focus on the dialogue and just leave the rest up for interpretation and imagination. In hindsight I was slowly learning more myself; more about the characters, about what their relationships were, what they meant to each other, who they are, and how they feel. It was really fun, just winging it and not over thinking it too much, but then I felt like I saw a longer length in store for this series. So I decided to avoid any confusion I would start adding in names and character actions and more description.

How the story went on for so long and Why?

I thought it’d be 5 chapters at most. Well how wrong I was. I just kept going, and as long as I kept thinking of new ideas, and new twists and turns, I thought hey let’s keep this up. So I kind of just let it run its course till I felt Lexie and all the other characters had reached their destination. I didn’t want to just wrap it up because I felt it getting too long. I wanted to finish each character’s story the right way.

Character Point of Views and Voice Overs

Writing Character thoughts and Voiceovers are probably one of my favorite things to write. I just feel like we get to see the character’s true feelings and what’s going through their heads. It’s my way of showing the truth while the characters try to find out how to be who they truly are. Carter and Lexie were the only characters who had P.OV.’s and voiceovers. This was a story based on the evolution from toxic affair to full on can’t eat, can’t sleep love story.

tumblr_lmnj9szpwD1qzb7cdo1_500“Back then, that’s all I knew of it. That we were a family and that you fight for the ones you love. But like I said before, they never tell you what it’s going to be like. And as I grew older, I began to see that same fearful side of my father in myself. The more and more I became invested in this so called business, the more I felt obligated to use my ability to instantly instill fear in someone. That’s when I knew I had to change it. And that change came in the face of one man. And although I may not be able to truly have him, I know that he’s worth fighting for, and so with everything in me I vow to protect him, and I vow to save her.” -Lexie

 The Evolution of core characters

At first Lexie is a powerhouse, and not good at opening up to people. You can tell by the way she distances herself from her staff that she has been hurt and has many secrets.

Carter over time evolves in terms of ruthlessness and Lexie’s ruthlessness will digress, as she realizes her father’s battle isn’t her own.

reeves vs lexie

We see Carter becomes ruthless when it comes to Lexie and loving her. He won’t let anything stand in his way.

Reeves is ruthless when it comes to his family, he won’t stand for anyone hurting his them. He will take action to protect them, no matter how drastic those actions may be. But we also see him sacrifice himself to save the rest of this family. It’s that whole mobster with a heart of gold storyline. You can’t help but secretly love him.

Lexie and Carter’s relationship is a stressful one at first. It’s driven by sex and high tension, and Lexie’s need to hold her power over him. However, as feelings start to arise, you start to see Lexie thaw and you notice that maybe she wasn’t always this way. Carter even makes mention to loving her genuine smiles, her yoga pants and when she lets down her hair and tries being herself. We find out that Carter and Lexie have more of a relationship then just an affair to remember. (Haha see what I did there?) The friendship is there. When Carter’s wife Kelly goes missing Lexie is right there to dive in a help him, even going as far as risking her own life to save her.

There is always an underlying respect, love, friendship, bond there…flirtation and fun….they belong together. Even when Lexie is using her power over him, in work related situations and other situations 😉 we later find out that Carter has always felt attracted to Lexie’s bossy ways. It was all part of their game. The passion, the tension, the back and forth bickering, the looks, the slight touches, the close quarters. The need to be with each other, it’s always been there, and all that drama just made it more interesting for them to fall in love. Ultimately they are there for each other, they support each other.

I did this so that it would be easier to follow and to put face to name. It was a visual thing. And it was kind of like a fun little promo thing to do to introduce a new face.

Holes I found In my story/General Notes:

Lexie and Carter’s Affair: I have to admit in my head this was much more sensual and sexual very physical relationship that builds into an epic love story. Which is still essentially what I think I created here. However, I think it is alluded to in the way they carry themselves while they are around each other, as well as in their body language and how they speak to each other. I think I toned it down for personal reasons. I don’t want my writing to be built upon a stigma which mirrors the heaviness of 50 Shades of Grey. I think there are ways to enhance this aspect of a story with how you film and how you direct your actors. Unfortunately Ryan Gosling and Sophia Bush are busy and haven’t returned my calls. So the movie version will have to wait. 😉

Timeline…I fast forward a lot to show case how long it’s been and sometimes as I did that I would lose track of my timeline, especially with Lexie’s pregnancy. That was difficult to keep track of. Also Lexie’s past could have been a little more specific. How old was Lexie when her mother died? How old was she when she entered the business? I feel like these questions could be answered through context clues, but maybe I should have been more specific. For instance we find out that Lexie’s past with Joe is a colorful one. Lexie got pregnant at 16 and lost her baby. I would say that Lexie lost her mom long before that, I’d say she lost her when she was a kid around 8 or 9 or so. And by 16 Lexie’s life turned upside down and she didn’t have her mother there to help her through and her father was still grieving and helped the best way he knew how. So Lexie sought revenge as a way to stifle her pain of losing not only her mother, but her child and her chance at a normal carefree college life. She was changed. I also mention that Roxy was an old boarding school friend. One who knew her life story, and one who also knew Joe personally and knew the whole thing that happened. So basically all of this is mentioned when Roxy is introduced. Which I felt was fitting.

Elena (the mom) should have been pictured. Reeves makes mention to how much Lexie looks like her and how much she reminds him of her, and Lexie tells Reeves in her letter to him how baby Elena looks like her mom so they named her after her. Also in the locket Roxy gives Lexie on her wedding day, there are pictures of both her daughter and her mom. I imagine visually the camera would close up on the locket and the pictures, I just failed to pick an actress to play the roll. Maybe that’s part of the mystery. The story is driven my a face unknown. In a way gathering from Lexie and her daughter’s appearance you can get a visual of Lexie’s mom in your mind.

The mob storyline could have been further explained. The drama and the fear was there but I just felt like Lexie was supposed to be portrayed as her dad’s successor but maybe it didn’t come off so well. Never the less I did so in a way because ultimately Lexie never wanted this to be her life, Lexie and Carter as all those who work for her father, are not cut out for that life. Their hearts are good. Brice is a perfect example of a guy who just needed a job to survive and got wrapped up in the wrong one. I think alluding to the lifestyle and Skully and Reeves’ ongoing war was enough to get the audience to understand the danger of it all. After all we do finally get to meet skully and there are kidnappings and explosions and shootings so I think there’s definitely enough mob drama displayed, now that I think about it!

Joan and Carter should have had a conversation about Joan’s choice to keep Carter from Skully. And also how Joan and Skully conceived a child. Were they in love back when Skully wasn’t so ruthless? I’d say Skully was always pretty ruthless, but Joan realized a little too late. The heart wanted what it wanted.

Who was John really??? A friend, a relative of Skully’s who decided to step in? I never really said. But I think that in Carter’s mind, it just didn’t matter, John was his dad, the man who raised him. The man who taught him how to be a man, and that’s all Carter needed to know. I did however allude to Carter and Joan having a conversation and that John and Carter are closer than ever in Lexie’s letter to Reeves at the end. That was kind of my way of summing up everyone’s storyline and showing you how this is a new start for everyone.

The clothing store front should have been more played out. In every mob story I’ve seen there’s the business which is the life of crime and all the illegal mumbo jumbo and then there’s the “legitimate” side where they import coffee or sell baked goods. It’s basically a front to gain a living while you continue on your quest of crime and illegal antics. I felt like I failed to carry the fact that Lexie was working in a fashion front. I feel like I through that detail in too late. It should have been introduced sooner, and I could have been more descriptive about Lexie’s office and the business surroundings.

I neglected to inform the audience that Kelly was a photographer. When she was captured. Carter mentions she had been traveling for a job. That she got a location and was rerouted to the warehouse. In my head she was a photographer who was traveling to a shoot. It’s difficult to keep little details like that in order when you are writing it, while your mind is thinking visually how you would orchestrate a scene and how you would shoot it, and how you would tell each character’s story. I lost sight of the fact that what I write is what the audience will know. So by not writing it, I missed a piece of the puzzle. Just because I see it, doesn’t mean the audience does. I have to be more careful of that. Check yo self, Michelle!

Lexie’s never killed anyone outside fatherly orders and self-defense…this was mentioned in conversation but we don’t get to hear the full story. It was more strategic, I suppose. Lexie has alot in her past. And I allude to the fact that Carter and Lexie have had multiple conversations about their pasts. Some are even played out in their scenes together.

What was Carter doing before he met Lexie and joined her in the mob? I definitely failed to answer this question. Obviously Lexie and Carter’s affair has been going on for a year or two, so this has been his job. But when they met what was he doing? In my head I guess he was a businessman of sorts….but I guess I just didn’t feel the need to go there. Ultimately this was a story about Carter coming into Lexie’s life, and changing her forever.

Kelly is quick with the comebacks like Lexie is. Carter has a type.

Lexie and Kelly mirror similar traits at times. The difference is Lexie and Carter share true love.

Irony that Carter just wants Lexie to open up to him and lean on him, while all Kelly did was lean on him and not do for herself. It’s the opposite, but there’s a deeper level of commitment and love in Lexie’s affection for Carter. Kelly may have loved Carter but Lexie is in love with him. Kelly and Lexie character swap a bit.

All in all, each character has an arc. But in the end, Justice is served where it’s due. Skully dies, Reeves goes to prison. Lexie matures so much and realizes that life has so much more to offer. And all of the rest of the characters get a fresh start.

****There is always going to be holes and questions. I think all in all, the story holds up. There are a lot of references to each of these holes and if you have an imagination I think they are easy to figure out. I mean think about all the shows you watch or the movies you love, don’t you walk away with questions. I know I do and yes it can be frustrating, but what’s a good story without a little room for audience interpretation and imagination. ;)****

To catch up on or read Mysterious Attraction in FULL start HERE or refer to the Mysterious Attraction Category on the right side. Thanks for reading!

Stay Tuned for what would happen if Mysterious Attraction  had a soundtrack 😉

I know I know, the story is over Michelle, let’s move on. But I’ve spent the past year developing these characters and their stories and I’d like to stay in this world for just a tad bit longer.

Hope you don’t mind 😉

Writer’s Corner

I’ve decided to start a new little ongoing topic. You can find all future entries in it’s own category on the panel to the right; under “Writer’s Corner.” The purpose for this category is for me to share some things I’ve learned as I continue to write and develop my own voice and style. I do want to make a disclaimer and say that by NO means am I a professional writer nor am I claiming I am qualified in giving advice on writing, but this is just my personal writing experience thus far and things I’ve learned. I’ve fought myself to understand that if you write, if you like to write, you ARE a writer. And you should embrace it. I do hope you can relate. Enjoy! 😀

“The truth about writers”

You wanna know the truth. Writers have no freakin’ clue what they’re doing. Sometimes a blue room is just a blue room. And sometimes it’s a metaphor for a calming skyline. And sometimes the things we’re writing are not what we think we’re writing about, but something entirely different. We are just as confused as the rest of the world. We are just trying to find out who we are, and what we want to do with our lives. As cliché as that sounds, that’s the hidden (well not so hidden) truth. We just put pen to paper to try and figure shit out. Pardon my French.
