Previously on Mysterious Attraction…

RECAP

Lexie sits in her office. She is looking at a photo of Carter on her cell phone, she wipes away a small tear, she scrolls to the left and a picture of her and Joe pops up.  Lexie presses delete and the image dissolves.

A knock is heard…

Lexie dries her tears

Lexie: Yes?

Joe pokes his head in

Joe: You wanted to see us.

Lexie: Yes I did. Come in.

Brice follows behind him

Lexie: Actually Brice, you are dismissed. I appreciate your efforts and you have been nothing but helpful. So thank you.

Brice glances at Joe who flashes a look of fear his way

Brice: No problem Ms. Lexie. Glad to have been of assistance.

Lexie nods toward him with a small smile, Brice exits

Lexie gestures Joe to sit

Joe: I realize that you’re probably not too happy with my performance today… and I –

Lexie: No. I’ll do the talking.

Joe: (blurts out) I love you.

Lexie gives him a look of disbelief

Joe: I understand that there is still so much between us that is gonna take time to forgive, but I am willing to work on it. I’m willing to fight for you. Because I know that we had something special.

Lexie: That’s funny because, I don’t seem to remember you thinking I was worth the fight all those years ago. Remember you left; you left when I actually needed you the most.

Joe: I was a kid, I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. I didn’t understand how I could be there for you, when I couldn’t even understand the situation myself.

Lexie: And what about me, Joe. I was a kid too. But I was the one who suffered the most. But no you never thought about me, did you? You only thought of yourself. My god it’s like I’m surrounded by selfish men! (covers her face in frustration). No wonder my father loves you… never mind the fact that you deserted me. But you know what… turns out I didn’t need you.

Joe: I’m sorry.

Lexie: Well you’re a few years too late.

There’s another knock on the door

Lexie walks over to the door, opening it, her breath is caught when she sees its Carter

Carter: Hi.

Joe: You’ve got to be kidding me.

Lexie turns back toward Joe

Lexie: Joe, you can go.

Joe: Nothings been resolved.

Lexie: There’s nothing that needs resolving, other then the fact that you need to keep your personal business out of this business.

Joe: And how do you expect me to do that, considering-

Lexie: Considering what…there’s nothing to consider…so whatever you’re after, just quit while you’re ahead.

Joe glares at Carter and stalks out of the office

Lexie turns back to Carter

Lexie: Can I help you?  (walks back toward her desk)

Carter: Why so formal? (laughs mildly)

Lexie: It’s just business.

Carter walks in and closes the door behind him

Carter: Are we back there again?

Lexie: You can leave that door open.

Carter smiles

Carter: Why are you afraid to be alone with me? (laughs walking closer to her desk)

Lexie: I’m not afraid of anything.

Carter: Ah, except love right? (Locks eyes with hers)

Lexie: Clearly you don’t know me well enough to make that judgment, kind of, the same way I don’t know you that well either.

Carter: I’m sorry, am I missing something?

Lexie: No. But apparently I was. So you can just stop acting like you actually care about me. I mean I’ve been part of your business plan all along, haven’t I?

Carter’s confusion is evident in his expression

Carter: I do care about you. I thought that we’ve covered this already.

Lexie: Carter I know ok. I know.

Carter: You know what?

Lexie: I know why you’re really here.

Carter: Ok. And why am I really here? (crosses his arms and leans against the nearby file cabinet, with a smirk)

Lexie: I think you should go.

Carter: (teasingly) You are seriously off your game tonight.

Lexie: Yea you know that tends to happen when you risk your life to save the wife of the man you love.

Carter: Well I came here to thank you. What you did was-

Lexie: Don’t worry about it.

Carter: What is with you?

Lexie: Just go please. Go home to your wife.

Carter: It’s your father isn’t it?

Lexie looks up at him

Lexie: Why would you assume this has anything to do with my father?

Carter: Because unlike you I think I know you pretty well. And I know that if you’re this on edge, it must have something to do with him. So what did he do now? …Wait a minute is he the one who orchestrated this whole thing?

Lexie: Yes.

Carter: Oh my god, Lexie!

Lexie: I had nothing to do with it, ok? If that’s what you’re thinking.

Carter: That wasn’t what I was thinking. I’m just a little surprised and confused.

Lexie: The day that you came back and told me…

Carter: That I loved you?

Lexie and Carter exchange glances

Lexie: …Well that was the same day that we had that fight, and I kept pushing you away-

Carter: Yea I kept telling you how much I loved you, and you kept pushing me toward the door. I remember it well. (pained expression)

Lexie: I only did it, because I had gotten a call. At first I didn’t recognize the voice and they basically insisted that I cut all ties with you and wire half a million dollars to an address in Chicago within the next week or something horrible was going to happen to you. It scared me to death, so I did it. And then when you told me that Kelly was missing, I realized something.

Carter: What?

Lexie: I realized that it all made sense. There were clues all along, and I was just too stupid and too preoccupied with my feelings for you that I didn’t realize what was going on right in front of me.

Carter: So your father kidnapped my wife to what- keep us away from each other?

Lexie: Essentially.

Carter: That’s one hell of a tactic!

Lexie: Oh believe me I know and I am dealing with him. He was completely out of line. But I guess he was just trying to protect me in his own demented way.

Carter: Protect you from what?

Lexie: From getting my heart broken.

Carter: By me?

Lexie: Who else?

Carter: (smirking) I don’t know that Joe guy seems to have the hots for you.

Lexie: Joe doesn’t have the power to break my heart.

Carter: Lexie?

Lexie: Look. I’m not this girl, ok? I’ve never relied on a man, and I’m not gonna start now. Especially on a man who is already spoken for. So… if that’s all, then maybe we should just find a way to stay as far away from each other as possible.

Carter: I don’t think I can do that.

Lexie: Well you’re gonna have to try.

Carter: No.

Lexie: No?

Carter: No. Look tonight when I didn’t know where you were or what was happening, I was ready to lose it. I love you, and I know that this can work, if you just give me time. Give me time just to figure out how to tell Kelly.

Lexie: Wow. The other side really scored with you. I mean you’re just so dedicated.

Carter: Ok there you go again, not making sense.

Lexie: Are you really gonna stand there, and play this game with me?

Carter: Isn’t that kind of our thing. You scowl and yell at me, and I try to act like it doesn’t make me love you more?

Lexie: You are really good. I have to admit, I was really convinced. I mean after all this time, you deserve an Oscar for your performance.

Carter: Ok Lexie, you gotta help me out here baby? What in the hell are you talking about?

Lexie: Don’t “baby” me.

Carter: What is wrong with you?

Lexie: Why don’t you go back and tell your father, that if it’s a war he wants, he’s got it.

Carter: What does my father have to do with us?

Lexie: Stop it, ok? Just stop it. I’m tired of this, just own up to it!

Carter: Own up to what?

Lexie: How you’ve been infiltrating my family’s business since the first day I met you. How it was all just some scheme to get Skully just a few steps ahead of us.

Carter: (laughs) Are you insane? First of all, I worked for Skully after we’d been whatever you wanna call what we’ve been doing for the past year. And if you remember correctly I didn’t last very long working for the other side. So what are you talking about? And why are you mentioning my father?

Lexie: Are you drunk?

Carter: Are you?

Lexie: Carter who’s your father?

Carter: I’ve told you about my father, his name is John and he’s a painter.

Lexie glares at him; she squints and purses her lips trying to read him

Carter: What’s going on?

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lexie walks over to him and kisses him, he kisses her back

Lexie pulls away and looks at him

Carter: Not that I mind, but what is with you? (he laughs)

Lexie turns away

Lexie: You don’t know anything about this do you?

Carter: No… I have to admit I’m pretty lost.

Lexie: So this thing, (gestures to the space between them) this is real?

Carter: You mean, you and I? Yea I’d say it’s pretty real. I mean it feels pretty real to me.

Lexie begins pacing the room as if she’s trying to make a decision

Carter: Lexie? You wanna fill me in here…

Lexie: (asks abruptly)  How was your childhood?

Carter: It was relatively normal, I mean my parents weren’t exactly poor but we struggled for a while, but I always had what I needed. Why are you asking? (laughs)

Lexie: Oh my god…

Carter: What?

Lexie: Carter, is there anyway that you…maybe your parents aren’t who you think they are?

Carter: No, I’m pretty sure my dad’s name is John and he’s a painter, and well my mom’s name is Joan and she’s a school teacher.

Lexie: Ok well, let me rephrase that, is there any way that you may have been adopted by John and Joan, and your real parents could… I don’t know… be floating about somewhere out there?

Carter: (laughs) Are you sure you’re not drunk?

Lexie: Oh my god, at this point I have no idea. (covers her face)

Carter: Ok I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that your father is spreading some lie about me, that has made you question weather or not I’m actually in love with you, so why don’t you just tell me what it is.

Lexie: No because, if I say it, then that’s just going to be yet another lie he’s told me. (begins to cry)

Carter: Lexie, (pulls her into his arms) hey…what’s going on? You can talk to me, you know that.

Lexie pushes him away

Lexie: I need you to go.

Carter: Lexie?

Lexie: Please.

Carter: Don’t do this again, don’t push me away.

Lexie: I just need time, ok? I’m sorry but I just- I don’t know who I can or can’t trust anymore and I just, I need to think.

Carter: You can trust me.

Lexie just looks away

Carter: Ok. Fine. But don’t waste time thinking about weather or not my love for you is real, because I think that after that kiss, you can answer that question for yourself. I love you, call me when you’re ready, be good. (blows her a kiss and leaves)

Lexie exhales and the tears begin to poor.

MEANWHILE…on the road…

Kelly: Um excuse me but are we almost at this hotel?

Driver: Yes ma’am, just about a few minutes away.

Kelly: Um would you happen to have a phone that I could use?

Driver: Sure do ma’am  (hands her a cell phone)

Kelly dials Carter’s number

Carter is sitting in a car trying to hot wire it, looking back to see if Joe and Brice have caught up.

Carter gets the car started

Carter: Yes! (pulls out and starts driving,  his phone begins to ring, pulls it out)… Lexie?

Kelly: …Carter?

Carter: Kelly?

Kelly: Yea!

Carter: Kelly, oh my god, are you ok? Where are you?

Kelly: I’m ok, I’m in a black car service. I’m on my way to some hotel…Your friend Lexie found me, she told me to have the driver take me to a hotel.

Carter stops his car and sighs

Kelly: Baby?

Carter: Yes I’m here.

Kelly: Where are you?

Carter: …Kelly are you in New York?

Kelly: Yea I never made it to Chicago, I was on my way to the airport and then I got this email saying to meet at a warehouse in New York instead. I thought it was a bit odd that they’d change locations so late, so I was all set to blow it off, when two big guys came out of nowhere and grabbed me and put me in the back of some huge van!

Carter: Jesus Christ! Kelly… Are you ok?

Kelly: Yes.

Carter: Did they hurt you?

Kelly: No.

Carter: Kelly don’t lie to me!

Kelly: Carter I’m not, they didn’t hurt me, I swear.

Carter: (exhales) Thank god, well the driver’s taking you to me. I’m outside the hotel. I’ll see you soon.

Kelly: Ok. Carter?

Carter: Yea…

Kelly: I love you.

Carter covers his face in shame

Carter: I love you too. So much.

Meanwhile…CUT TO-

Brice: Hello boss?

Lexie: Carter’s wife is on her way to you. How’s everything going?

Brice: We kind of lost him.

Lexie: You what?

Brice: Joe and Carter got into it, and when I turned my back to try and talk some sense into Joe… well Carter took off.

Lexie: Find him.

Brice: Already on it boss. (hanging up with Lexie, stops in relief seeing Carter step out of the car.)

Brice: Dude, really?

Carter: I’m sorry but I couldn’t just sit there. I had to at least try.

Joe: Well you didn’t get very far.

Carter: I would have, if I didn’t get the call that my wife was already on her way here.

Brice: Yes, and so is Ms. Lexie (gives Carter a look of concern)

Joe: (smiling sarcastically) Ahh the tangled web.

Brice: That’s enough Joe… Look I know Ms. Lexie is going to want to see with her own eyes that you are ok, but you having your wife around… it’s going to be awkward…

Carter: I’ll deal with it, don’t worry.

A black car pulls up and Kelly rushes out

She runs into Carter’s arms

He hugs her tightly

Carter: Oh my god, I’m so glad you’re ok.

Kelly hugs him back tightly

Carter looks at her

Carter: You sure you’re ok?

Kelly nods

Kelly: Yea I’m ok (smiles)

Carter: Where were you? Who took you? (cups her face)

Another car passes by

Lexie sits in the back seat, watching the reunion

The driver begins to slow down

Lexie: Keep driving, and go around back.

Kelly: I don’t know. Alls I know is your friend- Lexie, Was it? She saved my life.

Joe: How about that. (smiles)

Carter glares at him

Carter: So these people did they hurt you?

Kelly: No, I told you Carter, they never hurt me, (strokes his face lovingly). It actually felt more like I was a pawn. I don’t know… but I feel horrible I left your friend there, but she kept telling me to go. She said that she had some unfinished business with whoever took me.

Carter: Yea Lexie’s got a complicated life.

Joe: I’ll say.

Carter: Can you just shut up…this doesn’t concern you.

Joe smiles and holds his hands up in mock surrender

Brice’s Phone rings

Brice: Hello?

Lexie: I’m here. Report to my office please, we need to discuss a few things.

Brice: Mr. Carter and his wife are still here boss, am I to bring them up as well.

Carter glances over at him

Lexie: No, Just have one of the driver’s take them home.

Brice: Ok, you got it boss… (hangs up) The boss says you are welcome to take one of the cars home.

Kelly: I’m so confused who are you?

Brice: The name’s Brice ma’am. (holds his hand out to her)

Kelly shakes it

Carter: Brice and I work together

Joe leans against the building watching

Kelly: And he is?

Carter: You don’t need to know him, we’re not friends.

Kelly: Ok, well then…. So who’s your boss…

Brice: Why Ms. Lexie is…

Kelly: Lexie is here?

Brice: Yes.

Kelly: Oh my god, Carter… Lexie is your boss, how have I never known this. Why haven’t you ever told me?

Carter: She’s a pretty private person, (shrugs, trying to dodge any questions about Lexie).

Kelly: Well, I have to go and see her, she saved my life…

Carter: No baby… we’ll handle that another day ok, you’ve had a really crazy week; you should just go home and rest…

Kelly: Ok, well then maybe tomorrow?

Carter: Maybe.

Carter turns to Brice

Carter: Thanks for everything man. (Brice nods and waves to Kelly.)

Carter opens the car door for Kelly and they both get in and drive off

Carter’s eyes linger toward Lexie’s office window, and Kelly cuddles into him

Brice and Joe turn and walk toward the entrance to the office building

Joe: (laughing) This is going to blow up in his face so bad, and I can’t wait to watch.

Brice: You do realize that Ms. Lexie’s in love with him right?

Joe just stares at him

Brice: I mean you wishing for this thing to blow up, means her getting her heart ripped out. For a guy who claims to love her, you’d think you’d want to wish her happiness.

Joe: He’s married. That’s a fact. She can never be happy with him.

Brice: I don’t know…I wouldn’t rule Mr. Carter out just yet.

Joe: What? Is that the reaction of a guy that looks like he’s leaving his wife… did you see him hug her…

Brice: Yea, but I also saw how worried he was about Ms. Lexie…You know it isn’t impossible that he may just leave his wife for her. I mean not every guy is stupid enough to let Ms. Lexie go. (walks away and into the building entrance)

Joe stares after him, his expression one of pure guilt

CUT TO…

Lexie sits in her office. She is looking at a photo of Carter on her cell phone

Lexie’s Flashback…

Lexie’s Voice Over:

I remember that night. It was early on in our arrangement if that’s what you’d call it. It sure as hell isn’t a relationship, even though I know that’s secretly what I’ve always wanted it to be, what I’ve always thought of it as. I remember it was the first night we actually had a meaningful conversation, and it wasn’t just about the sex, or the attraction. But there was actually substance to he and I. We talked about our families and our likes and dislikes, it was really sweet. It was one of those moments that I treasured, but it was fleeting because I knew that we couldn’t go anywhere. I remember getting up to use the bathroom and thinking that I actually missed him. Just a few feet away, a room away, and I missed him. What sense did that even make? And then I realized it, the thing I had been avoiding from the first moment we were together…I was falling in love with him. And it was something that scared me and made me feel safe at the same time. I thought I had known love before, but this was just different. And it was a feeling that I really wanted to hold onto, for the rest of my life. So on my way back from the bathroom, I took a moment to myself, and I just watched him, and I remember just involuntarily reaching for my phone and snapping the picture. As if I wanted a token of the moment I knew I had fallen in love with Carter. He never knew I took it. And when I came back to the room, I just acted like everything was fine and we just parted ways, while he left me to head home to his wife.

Lexie wipes away a small tear, she scrolls to the left of her phone gallery and a picture of her and Joe pops up.  Lexie presses delete and the image dissolves.Lexie sighs and then A knock is heard…

Who’s at the door?

Lexie seems to be feeling a lot emotionally…betrayed by the man she loves…

**New Character Alert**

Lexie sits in the back seat of a private car service

Lexie’s Voice Over:

They never tell you what it’s going to be like. When I was a little girl, all I knew was I idolized my father. I thought he was so cool walking around in his fancy suits, giving those who worked for him just a look, and they’d be at his beck and call. He didn’t even have to say a word, they just did what he wanted. I always thought he was so powerful. It was a side of him that I was fascinated by, but a side of him that also made me fear him in a way I’d never feared him before. After all this was the same man who would give me cookies and milk when I’d come home school, who would tuck me in for bed but never before reading me my favorite bed time story, the same man who would be front row and center at every single one of my dance recitals cheering the loudest out of everyone. Growing up he was my hero. And because of this, I thought it best to follow in his footsteps and work for the family business. Back then, that’s all I knew of it. That we were a family and that you fight for the ones you love. But like I said before, they never tell you what it’s going to be like. And as I grew older, I began to see that same fearful side of my father in myself. The more and more I became invested in this so called business, the more I felt obligated to use my ability to instantly instill fear in someone. That’s when I knew I had to change it. And that change came in the face of one man. And although I may not be able to truly have him, I know that he’s worth fighting for, and so with everything in me I vow to protect him, and I vow to save her.

Lexie leans forward to the driver

Lexie: Remember if I’m not out in 15 minutes…

The driver nods, and Lexie takes a deep breathe before getting out of the car. She grabs her briefcase and holds her gun in front of her and walks slowly further around the back of the warehouse

Lexie peers around the corner and through the darkness sees a small window below as if it’s a basement window and through the darkness she sees her tied to a chair, blindfolded.

Lexie’s Voice Over:

She isn’t how I pictured her, at all. Blonde, thin build, but very beautiful, and scared. The only thing I could see was Carter’s face. And in that moment I knew I wouldn’t be the one to tell him that his wife couldn’t be saved.

Lexie scans the perimeter. She peers through the window Carter’s wife seems to be alone at the moment.

Lexie puts her gun in her pants and reaches into her brief case; she removes a small blade looking object and a glass circular object. Placing the glass object against the window she traces it with the blade; allowing part of the window to pop out. Lexie reaches her hand in and unlocks the window, opening it all the way, she uses a nearby piece of wood to hold it open. She slowly and cautiously proceeds to make her way into the basement. Once her feet hit the crowd. Carter’s wife straightens up hearing the sound.

Lexie slowly walks over, making sure to keep hidden in the shadows, scanning the room once more.

Lexie approaches Kelly, covering her mouth with one hand, she removes her blindfold with the other.

Kelly fights it and then sees her

Lexie: (whispers) Shhh, I’m here to help you. You’re Carter’s wife right?

Kelly nods her head

Lexie: Don’t worry ok, I’m gonna get you out of here.

She starts to untie her

Kelly: Who are you?

Lexie: (Smiling) Let’s just worry about getting you out of here first ok.

Lexie fully unties Kelly and the two make their way to the window.

Lexie: Listen to me, When you get up there, you’ll be at the back of the building, there’s a brief case on the floor with a gun in it, take it, and then walk a ways down the road, you’ll see a black car. Get in the back seat, and tell the driver to take you to the hotel.

Kelly: What hotel?

Lexie: Don’t worry he knows which hotel. Now go.

Kelly: What about you?

Lexie: I have some unfinished business here.

Kelly: I don’t understand…

Lexie: You shouldn’t, now go…

Kelly: Hey thanks uh…what’s you’re name?

Lexie: Lexie.

Kelly: Thank you Lexie, you saved my life.

Lexie: Don’t thank me yet, just go while you still can.

Lexie gives her a boost and she makes it out of the window.

Lexie looks around the basement… she sees a door at the far end and makes her way to it.

Lexie slowly tests if it’s open, it’s not. She reaches into her jacket pocket and removes a lock picking tool. The door budges open as she makes her way through it quietly. Her gun poised in front of her.

Lexie scans her surroundings.

She makes her way up the nearest staircase quietly. At the top of the stairs she pauses by a door. She presses her ear up against it. She hears two voices.

“But Sir, I thought you said that Ms. Lexie would have figured it out by now, we’re running out of time, the police may be onto us…”

“Give it just a while longer, my daughter’s very smart, she’ll put it together soon enough, and don’t you worry about the police… have I ever gotten caught before,” (small chuckle).

Lexie’s Voice Over:

Everything I’ve ever known, everything I’ve ever felt towards my father came crashing down, and I knew what my gut had been telling me all along, that my father had done this. My next move had to be smart. Because there are just some things a family can’t come back from.

Lexie knocks on the door slightly.

A guard opens the door, with a look of shock.

Lexie: I need to speak to my father.

Guard: Ms. Lexie?  (looks back at his boss.)

Reeves nods

Lexie storms in

Lexie: I’m glad I have your approval, you know to enter my own father’s office, (sitting across from him.)

Reeves: Princess, how good it is to see you. How’s everything going?

Lexie: Don’t even try it. I hear you’ve been expecting me, (glaring at him.)

Reeves: I understand you may be upset with me…

Lexie: How could you? After everything that happened here, how could you make me come here!

Reeves: The location was just a matter of convenience. It wasn’t the point I was trying to make. I wasn’t trying to hurt you, princess.

Lexie: And what was the point you were trying to make daddy? (that last word sounds like a curse and Reeves doubles back like he’s been hit)

Reeves: He isn’t for you.

Lexie: Oh my god! Are you kidding me? You went through all of this just to keep me away from Carter! Are you insane?

Reeves: You wouldn’t listen to reason so I had to dramatize things a bit.

Lexie: A bit? You kidnapped his wife!

Reeves: Kidnapped is a bit much…

Lexie: You held her against her will,  kept her in a dark basement, tied to a chair and blindfolded for over a week.

Reeves: Ok fine, but she was fed, allowed to use the bathroom, she was never hurt, never. The ropes and blindfold were just so she would quit trying to escape. We just needed to hold her long enough to lure you here. I knew Carter would come to you once he hadn’t heard from his beloved, dutiful wife. And I knew you’d wanna play the hero. And I knew he’d let you.

Lexie: (ignoring those hurtful words) You could have just called me. Jesus, I have been making myself sick over this! I didn’t know if this was you, or if this was Skully playing one of his sick games!

Reeves: I didn’t mean to make you scared, or worried. I just wanted you to listen. It was the only way I thought of to get you here and to maybe get through to you.

Lexie: Fine, well I’m here, so talk… (crossing her arms.)

Reeves: Carter isn’t the guy for you.

Lexie: So you’ve said…

Reeves: Not only is he married, which should be reason enough to stay away…but he’s also got quite an interesting history.

Lexie: (laughs sarcastically) You’re kidding me right? This all coming from a man who is just completely sin free.

Reeves: Lexie, please, look I know that I haven’t set the best example for you. But I am begging you don’t make the same mistakes I did, don’t let your heart cloud your reason. Because you’ll only end up hurting. Carter isn’t who you think he is.

Lexie: Wha- what does that even mean…We all have interesting histories. I mean really with our family background, we have no room to judge.

Reeves: No Lexie you don’t understand. Carter hasn’t been completely honest with you.

Lexie: What are you talking about?

Reeves: Lexie… Carter is Skully’s son.

Lexie’s face drops

Reeves: Princess…

Lexie: NO…you’re lying…

Reeves: Lexie…I wouldn’t lie to you about this.

Lexie: Yes…yes you would. Just like you lie about everything else. You lie dad, that’s what you do, and you just do it so that everything and everyone can be around to serve you, and do as you see fit. Well you know what, I’m done. (stands up angrily)

Reeves: Lexie, I’m just trying to protect you.

Lexie: Ok fine. Say you’re telling the truth. Then why the hell would you kidnap his wife! I mean are you fishing for a retaliation. Because I don’t know if you remember, but the last time we went to war with Skully it didn’t end too well.

Reeves: I understand Skully is a sensitive subject for you, for us. But I just thought if I orchestrated this whole thing, that maybe it’d scare some sense into Carter, and let him know to back off. Let him know that we’re onto his little schemes.

Lexie: So you think that he’s been infiltrating our business this whole time? You think that he’s been using me…

Reeves: I do, and I think that getting close to you was his way to keep Skully one step ahead of us.

Lexie: I don’t believe that, I can’t, it just doesn’t feel right.

Reeves: Here you are saving  the wife of the man you love… and he probably doesn’t even care that you’d risk your life just to make him happy.

Lexie: That’s not true. You don’t know Carter.

Reeves: Maybe you don’t either.

Lexie looks away about to cry

Reeves: Lexie, I’m trying to prevent you from getting your heart broken, or worse…You know what that family is capable of.

Lexie: Thanks for the heads up  (leaves the room slamming the door shut.)

She stalks past the guard and rushes out the front door.

As Lexie leaves the building she makes her way to the garage, walks over to one of the cars, leaning down she removes the keys from the tail pipe, opens the door and hopes in. She drives away. As she’s driving she dials Brice.

STAY TUNED!… As we start Chapter 4… Will Lexie confront Carter?

**New Character Alert**

Meet Lexie’s Lackeys…

2 & 1/2 hours since Lexie left…

Carter sits in a dimly lit hotel room

One security guard sitting across from him

Another guarding the door

Carter: This is insane, you do realize that right?

Brice: We’re just doing our jobs, Mr. Carter.

Carter: I don’t care about your damn job, I need to get out of here, and go save the woman I love.

Joe: And which woman would that be…

Carter glares at him

Brice: We are under strict orders from Ms. Lexie herself to keep you here until she orders otherwise.

Carter: And while you’re doing that…she’s out there alone…trying to save my wife! Anything can happen to either of them!

Joe: Rest assure Lexie is fully equipped to handle anything that comes her way, but she’ll be taken care of don’t you worry.

Carter looks at him suspiciously

Carter gets up and they both jolt

Carter: I’m going to take a leak…is that allowed?

Joe: Just be quick about it.

Carter looks back and glares at him

He gets in the bathroom and pulls out his phone

He dials Lexie’s number

It goes straight to voice mail

Carter looks around the bathroom searching for an exit strategy

He walks toward the bathroom window and opens it, it’s a steep way down

There’s a pounding on the door

Joe: It doesn’t take that long to piss.

Carter opens the door in frustration

Joe: You wouldn’t be trying to plot your way out of here, would you?

Carter glares again

Joe: Because I’d advise you not to. (His tone dripping in threat)

Carter: You think you frighten me… (he laughs)

Carter walks over to the couch sitting down he checks his watch

Joe: Gotta be somewhere?

Carter: You’re funny.

Brice’s cell phone rings and Carter’s eyes jolt up.

Brice: Hello, boss?… Yes he is safe…everything on our end is fine. Have you reached your destination?…Ok boss you got it.

Carter: What’d she say? Is she ok? (swiftly standing up.)

Joe: Sit down.

Carter: I’m sorry maybe you missed the part where I don’t take orders from you…

Joe: Lexie hired us. What we say, you do.

Brice: Joe. Dial it back.

Joe backs off reluctantly

Brice: Ms. Lexie is ok.

Carter: Thank god. Did she say anything about my wife?

 

Joe: Ah the many women …. (he taunts from the sidelines as he sips a glass of whiskey)

Brice: (attempting to keep the peace) No Mr. Carter, She didn’t mention your wife yet.

Carter: How is my relationship with either woman any of your damn business?

Joe: It isn’t really, but see what I can’t understand (he walks closer) is how Lexie could fall for a pathetic whimp of a man like you.

Brice: Joe.

Joe: No no I mean really…come on Brice, we all think it. Lexie is a powerhouse, she’s not built to deal with cowards like him.

Carter laughs sarcastically

Carter: Ah now I get it.

Brice: Can we stop now, can we? This is childish high school bullshit.

Carter: Oh I agree. It’s really pathetic how you are pining after a woman that doesn’t want you. And you hate me, because I have what you want.

Joe glares at Carter

Carter: Am I right? I’m right, right? (smiling sarcastically, taunting Joe.) I mean because really, it must eat you up to see beautiful, driven, “powerhouse” Lexie fall all over pathetic little me, and not even give you a second glance…

Joe: Shut up.

Carter laughs

Carter: And now you get the all star job of babysitting the man she loves. Ah the irony. (smiles pouring himself a glass of whiskey and holding it up in the air as a mock cheers before sipping it.)

Brice: Ok are we done?

Joe: You think you’re so much better than me, don’t you? (his tone laced with hate)

Carter: You know what, up until today I didn’t even really know you. I mean aside from a few random run-ins at work, I wouldn’t even have known you existed. But then again, Lexie’s never really mentioned you either, so there’s that.

Joe: You don’t know anything about my relationship with Lexie.

Carter: Or lack there of, (shrugs, with a smirk on his face). You know what though Joe, I have to say, even then just seeing you once or twice around the office, I knew I didn’t like you.

Joe: Well the feeling is mutual, (a cold and deadly stare).

Carter: But now that I do know you, I’m thinking yea, I am better then you. (He shrugs) And Lexie seems to think so too.

Joe lunges at him punching him in the jaw.

 

Carter doubles back after the blow a bit. His mouth begins to bleed, but the hit wasn’t enough to alter Carter’s stance.

Brice: Jesus! Joe, what the hell! (puts himself between the two.)

Back the fuck off, do you wanna get fired…because of your stupidity?

Joe: He’s taunting me.

Brice: And you started it.

Joe glares at him

Joe: I won’t have him thinking he’s better for her.

Brice: This is your job. Remove the emotion from it.  Leave that shit at home! God how many times do I have to remind you of that!

Joe: She belongs with me. You know that. Everyone knows, even her father!

Brice: That was a long time ago man you have to let it go. This is your job and as much as you hate it, your job is to make sure that he stays safe. Just think of how much she’d hate you if we let anything happen to him. Do you want that?

Joe: No, of course not.

Brice: Ok, then that’s it. Suck it up. You don’t have to like him, just stand there and guard the door. I’ll deal with the rest.

They both turn around to find the room empty, and the hotel room door open.

Brice: You’ve got to be kidding me, SHIT! (runs off in a hurry, Joe reluctantly in tote.)

Stay Tuned!  As we round out Chapter Three, we’ll find out where Lexie  is

and the truth will begin to unravel about her past with Joe…

A knock at her office door…

Lexie: Come in.

Carter enters looking distraught.

Carter: Can I talk to you?

Lexie: Look if this is about the other day-

Carter: I need to talk to you.

Lexie: You look nervous about something, are you ok?

Carter: I need your help.

Lexie: Well then you have it.

Carter: (smiles slightly) My wife hasn’t come home, and I know hearing me talk about her is a sore subject for you but-

Lexie: Don’t worry about me, what’s wrong?

Carter: She was due back this morning but she missed her flight, she hasn’t checked in and she’s never like this… she always checks in.

Lexie: Ok just calm down, flights get mixed up all the time, maybe she’s just out of cell phone range…

Carter: No, no I think there’s something really wrong.

Lexie: Like what?

Carter: I don’t know, I just have this feeling that something may have happened to her, something bad.

Lexie: Well, can you think of anyone who may have wanted to hurt her… forgive me, but in this business, these are the questions you have to ask. It’s the only way to know what you may be dealing with.

Carter: No  I can’t think of anyone, I mean my wife… she’s a saint, everyone loves her.

Lexie: I see. Well then I’m sure she’s fine.

Carter: That’s it.

Lexie: No. I mean if you need an airport or airplane contact, if you need a car or private jet to help you find her, by all means, it’s yours. I just don’t know how else I can help you…But I’ll do whatever I can…

Carter: Maybe whatever happened to her has nothing to do with her…and everything to do with me.

Lexie: Ok. Well who do you think would do something like that? (she crosses her arms)

Carter: Did you… do something…did you…did you hurt my wife?

Lexie: What, did you just ask me?

Carter: I need to know if you and this company could have anything to do with this?

Lexie: You are not asking me this right now!

Carter: I know we have history and frankly you hate whenever I bring her up, and I’m sure the idea of she and I only makes you angrier…

Lexie: I can’t believe you would even go there. To think that I would let you walk out of here after such a declaration of love and then somehow come up with this plan to have you think your wife went missing is disgusting! And it’s below me. And I would think you would know that! I may be ruthless, but I am NOT heartless!

Carter: What about your father, would he have had an issue with me working for another company. After all you placed me with his rival. Do you think he could have mistaken that, and saw it as a threat on my part, and decided to seek revenge?

Lexie: Whoa whoa wait, I didn’t place you with our rival.

Carter: Yes you did, it’s all in the paperwork, you placed me to work for Skully. I just figured you were pissed, and tryna stick it to me, teach me a lesson or something.

Lexie: Carter, I did not place you with Skully, there are less dramatic ways to teach you a lesson… there’s been some kind of mistake!

Carter: Wait a minute… what are you talking about?

Lexie: Skully is even more ruthless then me and my father combined. I would never place you to work for him.

Carter: So then how did this happen?

Lexie: I don’t know, I filed the paperwork myself, I don’t understand…

(she rummages through file cabinets to check her records)

Carter: Maybe you just made a mistake…maybe it was just an oversight, a mix up of paperwork…

Lexie: NO Carter…I’m never careless! (she finds the paperwork) I didn’t do this?

Carter: Well then who did it?

Lexie: I don’t know, but I’m sure as hell gonna find out.  I won’t have anyone jeopardizing your safety.

Carter: Since when have you ever been concerned with my safety, we’re all part of criminal activity on a daily basis.

Lexie: Yea well I’ve managed to keep you at arms length from the real grit of it all.

Carter: What does that mean?

Lexie: It means that you manage the door, but I run the empire. You deal with what missions I send you on. You have no idea how hated my father is by Skully and his men … where did your wife go, on her trip, where did she go?

Carter: She had a photo shoot for a magazine; it was based somewhere in Chicago.

Lexie: And what was the job?

Carter: She got an email saying to meet at some old warehouse. What does that matter?

Lexie’s expression alters from suspicion to fear

Lexie: Listen to me, you need to go home.

Carter: What? What about my wife?

Lexie: Go home, now. Stay there lock all the doors, I will have men by to pick you up in 15 minutes. They’ll most likely be there waiting outside for you anyway, they work fast.

Carter: What? Why?

Lexie: Look I can’t tell you much all I can say is that when the men come to pick you up, you’ll recognize them, you’ve seen them around the office; both tall, strong build, one by the name Joe; Sandy Brown Hair and the other Brice; More Fair Haired. They will take you someplace safe.

Carter: And where are you going?

Lexie: I’m going to save your wife. (grabs her briefcase and a gun in a rush.)

Carter: What? What do you mean?

Lexie: Do not ask me any more questions, the less you know the better (she rushes off. She stops turns back to him and kisses him.) Just in case I don’t I ever get to tell you… I really do love you. Be safe.

Carter’s Phone rings

Carter: Hello?

Brice: Mr. Carter we will be waiting outside your residence for you.

Lexie’s P.O.V

It’s been a week and a half and I’m starting to think maybe I was wrong. Maybe he’s not coming back maybe he really is over me, over this. But then again, there’s still a few days…where there’s a will there’s a way. And if he even feels a shred for me what I feel for him, then he’ll be back, he has to, otherwise I just don’t know what I’ll do.

She gets a phone call…

-Carter enters Lexie’s office-

Carter: You never were one to take your lunch break.

Lexie: You know me well.

Carter: That I do.

Lexie: So…to what do I owe this pleasure?

Carter: Working for another company isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Lexie: Ah. So you’re here strictly on a professional level.

Carter: Maybe.

Lexie: I see. And what exactly are you hoping for? I mean you’re position’s already been filled.

Carter: That’s not surprising. Although if you were so sure I’d be back, why’d you give my job away?

Lexie: You know me, I’ve always gotta be prepared, you know on the off chance I don’t get what I want.

Carter: See right there…. That’s it…that’s the reason why loving you is so damn hard!

Lexie: I can’t help that, Ok? It’s how I was raised. Besides if I were a man, no one would have an issue with me being strong and determined, and a little ruthless here and there. In fact they’d just worship me for grabbing life by the horns. It’s all sexist bull shit if you ask me.

 

Carter: Ok, can we not get all feminist right now? I love that you’re strong, that you’re determined…it’s what makes me fall for you every time. But the ruthless part that’s where I draw the line. I don’t mind loving you. When you give me something to love, it’s easy; it’s the easiest thing in the world… to love you. When you’re not working and you let your hair down and kick your feet up and drink a beer. When you wear those yoga pants you know I like. (he smiles at her) That’s who I fell in love with. I fell in love with you as a person, not your ego. And if you can tell me that she is still in there somewhere, then maybe we have a fighting chance.

Lexie: What about your wife?

Carter: She’s out of town, but that’s beside the point. I’m not talking about my wife right now. I’m talking about you and me. Forget everything else. Forget the pile of work on your desk you are itching to finish, forget the fact that your dad has been hammering you to maintain his criminal legacy, forget the burning feeling in the pit of your stomach that’s telling you to run out that door and away from this conversation. Forget that I am married. Forget all the bullshit that could stop us from being together. If this was a perfect world and I asked you to give this all up, and run away with me, would you?

Lexie: That’s asking a lot…

 

Carter: In a perfect world, it wouldn’t be…

Lexie: In a perfect world, the girl you love would still exist…. But look the hell around, we don’t live in a perfect world, in fact far from it. As for this world, being ruthless gets you far, being 12 steps ahead of your enemies gets you far… so this is me, take it or leave it.

Carter: I refuse to believe that. I refuse to believe that I cheated on my loving wife with someone who can be so ruthless. Because I’ve seen you when you’re at your best, I’ve seen how beautiful you are when you actually smile. And I mean a genuine smile, not that fake ass bull shit you flaunt for your clients. That smile’s evil and condescending. No, I’m talking about the kind of smile you reserve just for me.

 

Lexie: I haven’t smiled like that in a long time.

Carter: Well, maybe you can start, maybe I can help.

Lexie: (dismisses his attempt) You said you refuse to believe you cheated on your loving wife, with someone like me… well a man, who can cheat at all, in any form, is a man who knows there’s something wrong, something missing. For you, I was just a little fire, a spark you needed in your life. Other than that…

Carter: I was making reference to only the ruthless side of you! And really, that’s what you choose to hear… out of everything I’ve been saying! Why are you doing  this? (he shakes his head) You know there’s more to this then just some spark!

Lexie: I just think its best we go our separate ways…

Carter: And you’ve completely changed your mind in less then two weeks? I mean I would think you’d be happy to have gotten your way. I’m here. I came back. I came back for you, not some stupid criminal job. I came back because I love you. You know love… as in a severe feeling of affection and in our specific case, attraction…

Lexie: I think you should go.

Carter: So all of this between us, was what, a joke to you? Did you just say you loved me to make a fool of me? To get me to crawl back just so you could get a good laugh, just so you can once again prove your power over someone.

Lexie: I’m sorry it had to end this way. But I have my reasons.

Carter: Oh, you have your reasons! I am risking everything by being here. My Job, my marriage, my sanity, just because I actually believed there was something greater here. And your just gonna let me walk away…again.

Lexie: No… see the first time, you walked away all on your own… I told you to stay-

Carter: Exactly, you told me to stay, you didn’t ask me.

Lexie: Would it have mattered if I did?

(there’s a silent break and eye exchange between the two)

Lexie: Like I said I have my reasons.

Carter: What are you not telling me?

Lexie: Please just go.

Carter: Why are you doing this?

Lexie: Carter-

Carter: I know you, I know this wasn’t just a fling to you, you told me so yourself. Hell, you flat out told me to leave my wife! What changed between then and now?

Lexie: Either you go, or I’ll have you removed, your choice.

Carter: Fine, but if you think this is over, you are seriously mistaken. Because I have a little ruthless in me too… ruthless you haven’t even seen yet.

-He exits-

She sits in her office, nervously staring at her phone.

Phone Rings

Hello? ……Yes I have your money….but I need to know that the consequences have been removed. I need to know that once you get your money… that you will leave him alone. This isn’t his fight. Do we have a deal?

She hangs up her phone.

I can’t believe I made it out of there in one piece

I felt myself slipping though

it’s her power over me

If i hesitate too long to respond…

I have to learn how to control that

although my self restraint is pretty minimal when it comes to her

I’m not certain of many things

***Just a few notes on the development of this “series.” I’m going to try and do as many Chapters as I need to finish this storyline, I imagine it to be around 5 Chapters (possibly 3 parts each) but that’s just a random guess as I said before there is no definite outline for this storyline or these characters, I’m just going with the flow and seeing where it takes me, so it could end up being more or less, we shall see.

By now you may realize I do not use names, or character actions, a lot of this story is based upon the delivery of a line. You should have grasped by now a little insight as to who these two characters are. They are indeed a man and a woman, still nameless, but for this heir of mystery I don’t see names as important, and if you have guessed they have a great deal of tension in the workplace because of an affair. All of that would be correct. However, the man is married, and the woman is powerful and manipulative and for this man in particular, that’s a deadly combination.

If you’ve followed this from the first post you may have seen I’m getting more into using images. I want to say that I do not own nor do I take credit for them, they are just being used to guide the storyline. Also If you haven’t noticed already, I have put faces to these characters. The role of the woman; Sophia Bush, and the role of the man Ryan Gosling. Dream Big, huh???  😉 Now I want to be clear, this storyline is in no way relating to any specific characters they’ve played in the past, even though you may see similar elements here and there. For example, I am not saying Sophia’s character is a mirror of Brooke Davis (one tree hill), or Ryan Gosling’s character is Noah Calhoun (the notebook) in my story. I am simply saying that when I imagine these characters, these are the faces that come to mind, these are the living images, it’s about their look. Sophia with her dark hair, dark eyes, and curvy build and Ryan with his innocent yet seductive gaze. The two make the sexiest couple for the perfect tension filled room.

I know the dialogue may be hard to follow along with at times, but if you do follow the dialogue there are clues as to who’s who, just follow them. And as the story goes on there will be more and more clues. As for the dialogue itself each character line or speech is broken up by a space. So once there is a break in the page you know the other character is speaking. Each new part or chapter tends to leave off the last, for example if the woman spoke in the last chapter the man picks up the dialogue in the next chapter.  If this poses a problem maybe I will address it but I haven’t heard any complaints, so we shall wait and see.

Also I will try and refrain from character actions as long as I can, look to the dialogue for clues, but in the event someone is leaving or entering a room, I may indicate just to show the lapse in time, other than that, I want this to be fully focused on dialogue and really get to the heart of the issues between these two passionate characters… the tension revolves around the closeness of the work place, one suffocating office…who knows maybe when this is all over, I’ll create some video to go along with these scenes??? Hey Sophia, Ryan, you busy? With all that being said onto Chapter 2 … 😀

-He Enters Office-

Did you actually think you would get away with this?

Hello Handsome, have a seat.

Don’t patronize me. You made it physically impossible for me to be placed anywhere. What the hell did you do?

I made a few calls, said some things, that’s all.

That’s all. THAT’S ALL! Are you insane? You know, I thought that you were conniving and manipulative before, but I actually loved you for it. Now I can’t even understand why anyone would ever love you. You’re heartless.

I know you’re mad. But you don’t have to be cruel.

Says the woman who defines the word.

I did it because, I could tell it was what you wanted. You wanted to stay!

What? You are certifiably insane!

You just said it, you love me.

Used to. It was a momentary lapse of judgement.

If that’s what you need to believe. Look I only did this so we can be together. I did what was best for the both of us. I did what you didn’t have the courage to do yourself.

Oh and what’s that…

To be with me.

Hah, be with you! Why would I ever want to be with someone like you. You’ve completely destroyed my one chance at a decent job…with a boss that doesn’t relish in making my life miserable?

You think I’m trying to make you miserable?

When you deliberately do the opposite of what I say I want, yea I associate it with misery.

Fine. I stand corrected. You’re dismissed, from all your duties here. I’ll see to it that you’ll be placed somewhere else.

And I should believe you, why?

Because despite all my hateful qualities, breaking my word isn’t one of them…. you should know that.

That you’ll be back here in 2 weeks flat, maybe sooner. When you realize you’re bored. Bored with the routine, bored with the marital sex, bored with your humdrum job, and bored with your rational little life. But don’t worry I promise not to say I told you so.

I’m pretty good at reading people, body language and things like that… and well yours is saying you might just stay.

Is it now?

Mmm hmm, but you won’t. You’re thinking about it though… all the what ifs. You can’t seem to let go of the forbidden. But you’ll leave, because you’re a good guy, or at least you think you are. But the real reason… you’re  just not ready for me yet. But you will be and then you’ll crawl on back and prove just how right I am.

Make sure you place me someplace where I only have to work with guys, less headaches.

**** I am digging this so far! Hope you guys are too, whoever you are out there in cyberspace…

P.S. Any images or gifs used in this series are not my own, I do not take any credit for any of them. But do pay close attention to them. Since I am not using stage directions, or character names or actions, I am relying on the images to give you guys a little insight as to what’s going on with these characters. This is really fun for me. I can focus on the dialogue and just leave the rest up for interpretation and imagination. And in hindsight I’m slowly learning more myself, more about the characters, about what their relationship is, what they mean to each other, who they are, and how they feel. It’s been really fun, just winging it and not over thinking it too much, and I actually am really liking this mysterious vibe they’ve got going on! I’m sure by now you’re starting to see who’s who and who’s the guy, and who’s the girl and you get a sense that they have a romantic history of some kind, well I am learning it along with you guys, so let’s have fun!
